Peak Classic Trials Cub ran Round 5 of their Club Championship at Cookes Quarry, Sidenooks, Youlgrave near Matlock last Sunday 21st June. It was the first day of Summer, Fathers Day and an excellent day out in the Peak National Park for the excellent turn out of competitors who enjoyed the 4 laps of 12 sections.
The sections were made easier by the warm summer sunshine but mainly consisted of tight turns in and around the trees. Even though there was more grip than usual nobody stayed clean and there was some close competition with Pete Carson winning the Expert British Bike Class by 3 marks. The closest competition however came in the Pre 95 Air Cooled Mono shock class with Peter Roscoe on his Gas Gas just piping Chris Slack, Beta, to the win by 1 mark.
As usual the Club would like to thank all the observers who helped out and the event started with all but one section manned and that was soon rectified by one of the members who was not riding but had turned up stopping off on a ride around the Peaks on his road bike. Thanks mate it really is appreciated..

I know this sounds daft but it has happened to me with a TY 250.
Make sure the carb airscrew hasnt fallen out, it happens, and also check that the feed from the oil pump, if it has been removed and the bike converted to pre mix, has been blanked off properly.
I'd agree with the previous c\omments but worth trying the obvious ones.
Oh yes also check the inet manifold for air leaks.

What a difference a month makes. After Round 2 at Dudwood farm being arguably the hardest trial that Peak Classic Trials Club has ever organised Round 3 at Stathams Farm on Sunday 26/04/09 turned out to be possibly the easiest event the club has run. With the forecast rain not arriving till after the event had finished the sections proved to be a little easier than intended but because of this concentration not to have a needless dab was the order of the day. With the event also a round of the East Midlands Centre Classic Championship with points scored counting for both this and the club Championship meaning the pressure was on.
The Expert British Bike class was won by Pete Carson out on his BSA Bantam giving it a shake down prior to the Scottish Pre65. Derek Carson won the British Bike 50/50 class on his James and Pete

Well much as i would love to see Alan win as it would be sort of poetic seeing as he has helped most of the winners win by spending so much of his time making parts for their bikes whilst neglecting his own i dont think that will happen. He will be up there around the top 10 but ... Chris is a dark horse as he always goes well and that would also be poetic justice if he got a win but .... Norman ? well i know he's going to give it his all but .... My heart is with Magical Mick even riding one handed as his hand is a lot worse than he will let on and it would be phenominal if he got that long overdue extra win. I just hope he doesnt injure himself in the process as the following Saturday he's the best man at my wedding so if he could get the win then we may have the perfect wedding cup to drink from
OK i'm biased but Mick 1st Norman 2nd and Alan 3rd well you can dream cant you.
At least once the Scottish is over i might get Alan to machine my fork yokes

With what was probably the hardest trial that the club has ever held Round 2 of the Peak Classic Trials Club Club Championship proved a real test of stamina and determination. The event held at Dudwood Farm near Elton Derbyshire on Sunday 15th March was also a round of the East Midlands Centre Classic Championship with points scored counting for both Championships which might explain the severity of the sections ?
Section 9 took the most marks and on the Clubman route quite a few riders went over the handlebars at the steep run down to a very very tight turn back up and over the slippery boulders and tree roots than comprised the sections in the wooded half of the course. The rest of the lap consisted of the familiar stream sections which in contrast to the woods were much more enjoyable and though they took marks from the strong field of 59 riders most of them had no complaints.
The Expert British Bike class was a runaway win for Pete Carson out on his BSA Bantam for a change, obviously getting used to Bantam power in the lead up to the Scottish. Dave Glover also on a Bantam , is there a theme developing here ?, won the 50/50 route and ex works Francis Barnett rider Mick Ransom took the honours in the Clubman class of course riding his trusty Francis Barnett.
Best ride of the day was no real surprise and went to Steve Garlick winning the Expert Twinshock route on his Armstrong who had an outstanding ride only losing 12 marks way less than anybody else in any class.
The Pre 95 air cooled mono class won by Andrew Land on a TY 250 was once again well supported but extra entries are always welcome.
The Club would like to thank all the observers who had a very long day mostly due to the long delays with the long queues in the woods resulting in the event taking much longer than normal to complete. At least the weather was spring like but the Club really appreciates your dedication and support without which we could not organise our events.
The next event Round 3 of the Club Championship and also another round of the East Midlands Centre Classic Championship will be at Statham's Farm opposite the golf course just above Matlock and the organisers hopefully will try to lay out a more rider friendly course especially for the Clubman Class and hopefully keep the riders scores down to double figures.

Well it's happened to all of us at some time or other. Bought a pretty bike from somebody we thought we could trust only to find it's a total wreck once you delve beneath the pretty skin. This time it's my turn with my MAR.
Only thing to do is bite the bullet and get stuff welded etc etc. Main problem that is really causing me concern is the crankcases are cracked around the gearbox drain plug which will have to be welded up. also the magneto cover looks more like a photo of frankenstien from the inside and has been welded, badly i hasten to add, more times than i've had fives.
I know you can fit primary cases from all models including the Gripper because i know a guy who runs a gripper cover on his MAR but can you run a gripper mag cover also? I'm only asking because mag covers are like hens teeth and i need to fit something. As for the crankcases i've accepted i will have to get them welded as the rest of the engine will be shimmed up to suit these cases. Strangely it started and sounded ok till i tried to top the gearbox up then had a flood of oil everywhere. So will fit new bearings and seals and move on but i still need outer cases.
Has anybody any experience of fitting cases off any other models?

Peak Classic Trials Club held Round 1 of their 2009/2010 Club Championship at Burycliffe Quarry, Elton Derbyshire on Sunday 15th February and made the most of a milder spell in the wintry weather of late. A brief shower of sleet had a few of the 66 entries worried but the threatening snow failed to materialize. Burycliffe had a good covering of the white stuff only days previously but no sign was left by the start of the trial other than the, unusual for Burycliffe, mud of section 9.
Due to the weather and the fact that the trial was followed by the presentation of the Championship awards for last season at the Miners Standard pub only 4 laps of 10 sections comprised the test on the day. However nobody stayed clean all day. Steve Garlic came closest on his CCM with a superb ride dropping only 1 mark on that muddy section 9.
The Club would like to thank all the riders who competed in the 2008/2009 and extend a warm welcome to all our regular riders and all our future new regulars. The entry of 66 was one of our best for a while so we must be doing something right ! Nice to see 6 entrants on pre 95 air cooled monoshocks, surely one of the cheapest ways to go trialing in these financially challenging times.
Our next event is on 15th March at Dudwood Farm and is also an ACU Classic Championship Round.

The Peak Classic Trials Club held the first round of their 2009 / 2010 , where did those ten years go?, club championship last Sunday 15th February at Burycliffe Quarry followed by a meal and the presentation of the club championship awards for 2008/2009 held at the Miners Standard Pub near Elton Derbyshire.
This coming year there will be in addition to awards in all the usual classes awards for Pre 95 air cooled monoshocks on all three routes, Expert, 50/50 and Clubman. We feel that this is an ideal way to get people back into the sport but would like to take this opportunity to remind all our regular competitors that the club is primarily a "classic" club and the sections will continue to be laid out with the Pre 65 British Bikes and Twinshocks in mind along with all our events being run on a no stop basis.
So next year your name could be featured in the class winners but for now the results for last year are as follows.

A milder spell in the freezing cold weather of late came as a bonus to all the riders at the 12th and final round of the Peak Classic Trials Clubs Club Championship held at Cookes Quarry, Sidenooks Nr Youlgrave Derbyshire last Sunday 11 January.
The sections which mostly consisted of tight turns around the many trees and rocks that are a feature of this popular venue turned quite greasy as the ground thawed out making it difficult to keep the front wheel on line. Saying that there were a lot of smiles on the faces of the competitors and by common consent everybody had an enjoyable time. Thanks therefore go out to Andy Yates who with a little help from the usual culprits laid out the course which consisted of 4 laps of 10 sections.
The winner of the Expert British Bike Route Peter Carson was giving his Pre65 Scottish bike a shake down which makes his win even more impressive seeing as it is a rigid ! and yet to receive a coat of paint. Well done Pete the bike looked and sounded great. Looking good for the rigid win in Scotland.
The air cooled mono class continues to gain in popularity with Yamaha Pinkies predominant so far.
Also worthy of mention is the win in the 50/50 British Bike Class for ex Francis Barnett works rider Mick Ransom as part of his preparation for the Scottish Pre65 and so nice to see Andrew Cook back on his Cheetah taking a win in the Clubmans British Bike Class.
The next trial, Round 1 of the 2009 Club Championship, will be at Burycliffe Quarry Nr Elton Derbyshire on 15th February and presentation of the awards for 2008 will be held at the Miners Standard Pub immediately after the event around 3.00.
The Club would like to thank all the observers, course setters, riders etc who have helped with and attended our events through 2008 and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2009.
Thanks are also extended to Martin Booth who has done a sterling job through the year and without his dedication there would not have been a Championship in 2008.

Start of "it" all ? "it" started with the very first bike that was ever trialed and continued with every trials bike ever since it's the nature of trials " improving the breed "
What do you class as a replica, something built 30 years ago or something that's a constant work in progress?
Not really bothered theyre all bikes.

We won't even bother going down the road of BSA's.
Every bike entered in this years event is "modified" in some way however small from the day it left the factory.
...because there are some that do want to ride original bike and they have to be catered for, you can't just throw them out because they are ancient. My favourite bikes over the last few years? Those amazing rigid 500 Nortons, Arthur Lamkin's ORIGINAL C15 that Chris Sutton rode a couple of years back and a certain Matchless....that's never changed, not as long as I can remember. The Ariels, jimmy's cubs and big Triumph twins are pretty to look at but they don't do it as much for me as some other.
But nobody has ever said if someone wans to ride an "original" bike they cant. They wont win but thats not always the point for some nay most of the entry.

The Ballot: it's the rule, it won't change, I do not believe it's as farcical as most seem to be under the impression, the individuals involved that I know are too honest to be "on the fiddle" and I'll stand by that.
I dont believe anybody "fiddles" the ballot. I just don believe it's a true ballot as most people understand a ballot.
FWIW i dont see why any previous winners should get an automatic entry but that just my humble. Little bits are finally coming out that the "ballot" is "organised" which is fine if only that was openly admited to.
The pre65 Scottish is mostly effectively a "invitation" event with a "ballot" of sorts for the remaining places. I'm ok with that also but please be open about what happens and dont insult my and others intellegence by trying to make out otherwise. Just be open and honest or even better hand over ALL the entries to a 3rd party who has no connection with the Trials community who would hold a totally accountable and open to inspection draw for places with no and i mean no pre allocated rides wether the person supports the trial financially or has a sibling riding or any other good cause.
If "original", i've never seen one outside a museum, bikes "need" to be seen and are so popular to the spectators, since when has a trial been organised for spectators?, why not have a concours competition in the car park?

Still dont see why anybody would want to ride a std spec bike c/w steel everything and bakalite tyres.
Dont have any problem with the bikes but as for the farce that portends to be a "ballot" well that makes the US system seem almost transparent

True the PVL doesnt use the original Villiers flywheel.
Why would you want to though? remembering the age of any Villiers flywheel and the fact that it wold probably be ready for remagnatising anyway, assuming you are serious about competing not just playing at it?
I found the other benifit is that it is easy to play around with the flywheel weight when using the PVL system. Not so easy to tune the engine characteristics with the old Villiers system. IMHO

I can only suggest you follow your heart. If you know someone who has a Nametab system fitted and they are happy with it then go with what you know. I supplied a Nametab system to a Spanish friend of mine and it let him down badly in Scotland.
I am running a PVL myself. Why ? Well i had a PVL fitted to my B40 for two years with no problems so i fitted one to my James on the strength of my experiences. In two years it has never let me down so i will probably fit another PVL to my next project.
Saying that there are PVL systems and ther are PVL systems. Some are made to fit Karts and are not suitable for Trials use. Some are made for 4 strokes and are also unsuitable for 2 stroke Trials use.
So be very careful who you buy from and make sure they know what they are doing. I would only use Alan Whitton because i have bought from him in the past and have alwaysfound him most helpful with after sales service and advice. There are other people selling ignitions for Villiers etc and i only recommend Alan from personal experience as a happy customer.

Think i'll stick with the system i know PVL. However i've just "aquired" a points ignition Villiers engined bike so might just give it a go "back to back". Last one i tried which also had a cast iron barrel was errr totally gutless and pooo
Love to see what the bikes we will be riding will be like in 2018
