  1. Happy new year everyone. I was out yesterday on my 348 Cota, I have just fitted 10t to 38t chain and sprocket kit, so the bike seems to have so much more torque and runs so nicely clutch out. As a wobbler I am finding this helps my riding. The engine is running better than its ever run in my ownership its able to tick over while I walk a section. It does sound like all the bearings are shot but so many old guys tell me they all sounded like that when new! So my problem this week began after about two hours riding. it began to rain and I went to pieces on any steepish climb, loss of traction had me using too many revs and having dropped the bike several times the exhaust began to emit too much smoke. (normally when cold it smokes but a hard rev seems to clear things.) The smoke is mid to light grey. I suspected that dropping on its side had caused a temporary smoke effect and gave it a bit of a hard rev up. At this point within the smoke cloud a worrying amount of sparks were visible in the smoke. Luckily it was all downhill to the car park. Someone that was watching suggested crank seals, can these fail so suddenly? when I got back to the car I also found that I had used half a tank of petrol in about 20 minutes, its most likely I spilled it when the bike was on its side, but could this be related? Finally not something that troubled me too much but I also found the bike would stall if left facing downhill while ticking over. Thanks all. Alex
  2. I do not profess to be anything of an authority on Sprites but I have started a picture collection on Flickr. If you dont mind Ill copy your pics and post them there. If anyone else wants to add stuf you can easily join Flickr or send me pics and Ill add them. There are some bikes called Goldfingers in there, only because thats what I was told they were. http://www.flickr.com/groups/1391096@N22/ Alex
  3. Only because I had some in my workshop. I have succesfully used fibreglass tissue in my 1978 Cota 348 exhaust. This is the fine stuff that you use to tidy up chopped strand when mould making.
  4. Thats the bike. I have been search for stuff in internet. Spanish Moped forums are supplying a lot of info. Some one has emailed me the parts list. You are right 57M is the frame number. The pedals thing is the next to look into, all the period photos show only one pedal but the engine and parts list show the shaft machined to fit a second pedal. I hope to have this one built before christmas and will let you all know how it goes.
  5. Watch out for oil leaks. I used to transport my 348 on its side in a mercedes W124 estate. It would fit with both wheels fitted, but easier to remove the front wheel. The forks used to leak oil when tipped over as the seals were shot. the gearbox has a breather that will let gear oil out when fully laid on its side. The oil doesnt leak until you are concentrating on the road ahead.
  6. If he was happy then best not to worry. I have a sailboat to give away at the moment I am sure it be worth a fortune to someone (whom I cannot find) but an additinal parking space is worth more to me at the moment. Probably every biker has a story of a bike they regret selling. There are also an annoying lot of people with stories to tell about bargains they got. On a good day that bike I would expect to go for
  7. Hello all, I wonder if anyone here has any experience or knowledge of the Montesa Fura 49cc? I have one in bits and want to start to rebuild it. It has a 49CC JLO engine with what appears to be a cable operated 3 speed gearbox. There is no kick start it appears to require two bicycle type pedals like a moped. Those pedals are missing. I wonder these bikes were ever sold in Britain? I can see they were sold with lighting kit in Spain but this one does not appear to have ever had lights as there are no switches and only two wires coming out of the engine. Any help welcome. Alex
  8. pm- Private Message there is a button to the right of our names at the head of each post that lets you send emails within the membership of this website. I just sent one to you. I have given you my personal contact details so we can arrange outside of the forum to swap manuals. I have my account settings so that when a PM is sent something is also sent to my real email address to let me know.
  9. There is an artical in last moths Vintage motorcycle club news letter regarding tank sealers. It seems that the new higher levels of bio fuel in pump petrol is having an effect on older tank sealers. bearing in mind the awful problems getting the wrong sealant out you should hang back on any solution that worked 6 years ago. I have taken to emptying my fibreglass Montesa tank after every outing. This ethanol thing is quite worrying for anyone with any machine (including lawnmowers and boats etc) built prior to the past few years. Ill try to summarise that artical soon.
  10. if you pm me I can send you one. Its 6.4 MB Its not bike specific but covers a lot of Montesa stuff from the 70s on. Its the Clymer manual and is a dodgy scan I bought for 99p on ebay. The same version is kicking about the internet for free. My version has one critical page missing re the Amal carb. Look up in the forums as previously someone posted a link to a direct webdownload- topic number 35772 29 aug 2011 its there today TODO is great but thats the handbook and parts lists. (Which are very useful as well since Sandifords sell parts on Ebay by part number only so you can check if they will fit your bike.)
  11. Hi all, more on the sprites. There is a frame gone up for sale on Ebay today, suggests its a sprite but I am not sure. Its an unused item which is exciting form a historical view.
  12. My Friend Ben posted a link previously to his website where he is hosting a download link for the manual. I am sure he will not mind me reposting? http://bpilgrim.co.nr/
  13. Mostly I disagree! The combined knowledge of the internet surpasses many professional mechanics. Only ever take anything to a mechanic that someone specifically recommends. hopefully when we find out what he did wrong we will all learn a bit more.
  14. [The good news is that engine didnt stop that quick. The shaft ground itself to a point and that means there was an almighty noise while the very round flywheel simply rubbed its self to a halt in the casing with I expect the engine running on. Do you have the flywheel? I have a spare in Surrey if its of use. I saw a photo of one of these that had been welded, not a bad repair until you need to do the crank seals! You will need to do the economy maths but francetrialclasssic do sell a half crank as this is a common enough problem with these engines. I was very lucky to buy one on ebay recently that came from Sandifords. In my opinion the woodruff key is too big for the diameter of the shaft. if the flywheel is not a good enough fit on the shaft or not torqued up enough it vibrates which in turn opens the keyway up leading to splits and then to catastrophic failure of the shaft. I have a spare engine that has run for a good few hours with the chunk of shaft that splintered off, soldered back in place and hand dressed with a file to be a tight fit. There are always engines on Ebay, If you do buy one be looking out for the condition of the crank

  16. I dont know so much, my only qualification is I accidentally bought one off ebay and have not got round to starting work on the rebuild yet. This being Trials Central maybe you are not so aware of the otherside of Franks business, selling scramblers. There is a fantastic thread based on Australian MX version of Sprites where they were known as the Alron. Here is a link to maybe the longest forum thread of all time, more than 40 pages and filled with intrigue and even a sugestion theres a book to be written. http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=8321.0 There are some apparent real comments from Frank's son which lend credibility.
  17. Ben, Mine has a made up cable. I measured it and the exposed length is 240mm and the centre to centre distance on the brake arm is 90mm. where the mudguard stay bolts to the top of the cast fork tube there are two lugs. In between these lugs and the mudgaurd stay there is a steel bracket that extends to the rear where it holds the brake cable outer sleeve. I can take a snapshot and post to your facebook page.
  18. Ben, check out these pictures of an unrestored 348 http://www.loeil2fred.com/photo/8766-France-Trail-Classic-La-boutique http://www.francetrialclassic.com/uk/ You can buy most of what you need here but they seem expensive. There is a guy from Brazil that pops up on ebay now and again selling complete rubber sets for a reasonable price. Increasingly In Motion have all the proper bits as well.
  19. I painted my 348 tank with two pack car paint. it was a quick job I just wanted it tidy. the previous owner had already painted it but I washed all that off, filled some damge to the gelcoat with polyester body filler, then a coat of ordinry cellulose primer. its been fine for two years, I had always emptied the tank to put the bike in the back of my car. I now have a bike rack and do not bother draining the tank. Over this hot summer my paintwork has blistered really badly and noteably only on the areas that are tank rather than the none tank areas of fibreglass. I am fairly sure its petrol fumes forcing through the GRP. This may be due to the rumours of modern additives not being compatible with Fibreglass. I have now bought an alloy tank and cover off Ebay so will not bother trying to fix mine.
  20. Mine is a 348 so sorry if this is not appropriate to this thread but its useful I think. My 348 was very noisy in an unpleasant way being very tinny/tingy rattly etc. The back box I know people repack and swap for exotic alloy items. So I repacked my back box and even tried an alloy exotic but still the bike sounded horrible and the fibreglass of the tank cover where it rubs on the centre box was burning. Mick at Tricky trials suggested that my centre box packing has all blown out and that the perforated tubing inside has come adrift. shaking the pipe reaveled he was correct. I needed to open it up and have a look. The decision then cut the seams or make a window? well the seams are very long, there are the pipes at either end and some of the partitions inside are welded across so it will not simply fall open. On my 348 I cut a window with a 1mm sliting disc fitted in my angle grinder. I have paneled over the hole with an over sized peice of aluminium. As the metal of the silencer is so thin, self tapping screws would not tighten so I have used pop rivets. Mine does blow a bit so I like your silicone idea. My bike however runs much better now and is quieter with a much more satisfying exhaust note.
  21. The manual seems to have moved to here. http://www.todotrial.com/ttclasico/manuale...nualcota348.htm September 2010
  22. This is so like my initial Montesa experience. My crank was about to snap, it has a crack running along the bottom of the keyway groove. I bought another scrap engine on Ebay and have mixed up bits to make one good engine and one that runs but is ready to blow. I have been very lucky and Sandifords in UK just sold TWO crankshaft halfs on Ebay! Me and another guy only paid
  23. http://www.todotrial.com/ttclasico/indexttclasico.htm at the left side of the page theres a winding road with signposts click on zone 10 Manuales there isnt one for a 248 specifically but the exploded views are still useful. Its been a help to me this week since Sandifords are offering a lot of parts on ebay at the moment with only part numbers. I feel lucky to have bought a half crankshaft for my 348 engine that's flywheel nut had cracked off!
  24. This link has been given before but useful to post again? There is an on line user manual for this bike with exploded parts lists which will be of some use initially. http://www.todotrial.com/ttclasico/indexttclasico-total.htm? There is a rather general 'Clymer' manual covering montesas which is often available on ebay for 90p plus post. there are some pages missing from it though.
  25. Re the coil, theres one for sale on ebay at the moment. It claims to be for a 348 and does look exactly like mine. Ebay number 280505617518 My alloy tank sticks out same as yours although mine is a 349 tank in a 348 Yellow GRP cover. my 1978 one piece red GRP tank has a fitted breather within the GRP. My Alloy tank also has a welded in breather tube. Re, the kick start shaft, you will not be able to push start the bike in some of the places where the engine will stall. Alex
