The clutch on the 17 sherco & scorpa is definitely heavier than the 16s, the 17 trs rr  is lighter (not tried a trs one), None of them are as light as the monts though!!.

My point is that as pastietwin says the rr is light but lineaway says it isnt and one ossa is very much better than the others yet a gas gas is the best (heffgem).

With a diapragm clutch it needs to be the right pack height if not then it wont be that good regardless of make......

So to say this clutch is best just probably means its correctly adjusted?

I rode a new 300 ten days ago and there was nothing hard about the clutch pull. And I severely damaged my clutch finger two months ago. The day I rode the TRS was the first time I had been back on a bike since my injury. The TRS is probably the best new bike that I have ridden. (I have yet to ride the Vertigo)

Have you ridden the Gas Gas gp? The new Scorpa and factory Sherco? The rr has a good clutch action you tried that?

  3. Scott bike prep (normal servicing but yes thorough like the ssdt) is probably not as important as personal fitness, this is often the limiting factor, and is why top guys can turn up and finish the course.

Fuel is not a problem as the refuelling is carried out at 6 or 7 petrol stops.

Some extend the front mudgaurd with tape to limit spray and radiator getting clogged.

Tools are carried mainly for puntures etc

  4. Economy as much as anything and history i suppose. First went to portugal in 1979 and they had either just joined EU or were about to. They had oxon in fields and an abundance of beggars at stations and in the cities. A very diverse and two tier wealth were very poor and very rich. I just imagine that there has never been much oppourtunity to ride trials as they sort of missed the 70,s boom.

Turkey and so many other countries have the same though an abundance of trials terrain.

Store in black plastic bag to keep sunlight off them. Cooler constant temperature is best. Some claim tyre paint contains chemicals that reduce aging. Surprisingly tyres age less when used regularly.

Age less when used regularily? That would wear them out though? So wont help much with storage will it? DOH!

  6. Before accepting a computer based diagnosis i would simply get everything spot on. Give the bike a full service and pay particular attention to the carb spark plug (new) air filter and so on. Do not think one thing will cure any "problems" you may have this is unlikely.

A well set up bike with all controls working as they should is a great starting point.

A slow throttle is no substitute for getting some throttle control by time spent on the bike rather than changing this or that.

Appleyards were the last importer of these bikes. I think Harglo preceeded Sandifords as Beta importer before John Lampkin took it on. So I'm not sure who imported Italjet before Appleyards

Beta was something to do with Roy Carey after sandifords?

I've compare the porting of a 199B, 199A and a 159 and they were all the same. If there is a difference, I missed it. The 159 is more aggressive due to the lighter clutch weight. Fit a 250 ignition flywheel and clutch weight to the 199A or B and either will spin up everywhere

Does the 199b not have different transfer ports and (originally)piston windows? @woody

Being new to the Bultaco family even after nearly 37 years of trialing having never owned a Bultaco and only ever riding one in a trial once, I have sold a nice Pre 65 to reinvest in the marque. I read with interest this thread because I thought the 199b was the Bultaco I always wanted, and should buy,  only to find that many other people,  better qualified than me talked me out of it. When I was still adamant thats what I should buy several were for sale in France and also in Spain. This backs up the point  Dabster made about they are not that sought after in Spain,  or highly prized, perhaps like the Uk.  Many of my Spanish chums including El Puma think the 199a is the better bike .  Now this is not to say one is better than the other just to reliterate a point made earlier about the desirablility of one model over another.  I did out of interest buy a very nice 199a after doing my homework, its having a little bit or work done in Spain, I will report back when done what head steady it comes back with.

I dont know why the 340 isnt admired in spain could be the dry grippy conditions i dunno. I would say the frame set up and the 6 speed was always nice and the torque are all bettr out the box. I do think they fettle the 325's and then say they are good but dont do the same to the 340. Very few late 250's in spain

That may or may not be true. But if Tony Bou won a trial this weekend with a banana stuck in his left ear, we'd all have a banana in our ear next week.

..maybe in somerset? I doubt the same would be true in Yorkshire.

Joking apart if the above were true the 4rt would be the only bike ridden theyve been around ten years now and are still thin on the ground.

The 2 kits I bought came with the T bracket but in pieces you have to weld the T bit why its on the cylinder hear the holes for the bolt and stud are drilled out ready for 350 or 250 when You buy the kit. To be honest unless your a hard rider going over rocks ect you don't need the extra strength Begs the question why I had them put On :stupid::stupid:

This is probably true but they cracked back in the day andas much as anything its a preventative modification.

Interestingly the Puma and Vasquez built bikes I have seen are usually fitted with the fork type and sometimes a strip from the head to the frame down tube, anyone know why this is. Surely the triangular three point fix one would be better.

Cos everything they do isnt necessarily the best. Im not so sure but the high esteem that the 340 is held up in here in the uk isnt tha same in spain. remember that both vesty and john Reynolds via comerfords did more development after 82. One of their things was the improved head steady.

"they justifiably want him etc" It seems I am not the only one pondering if the decision was entirely JDs.

A general comment - One function of forums such as TC is to illicit speculation and try to find answers, its a pity some don't realise this and resort to insults and accusations.

Ponder all you want, but in the name of finding answers if you dont get the one  you want accept it, or at least make an objective comment for a change, rather than bending things to suit your pov??
