im thinking of getting the apico rear sprocket for my beta. has any one thrid them? any good?

also thinking of the iris trials chain. are these any good?

I've heard nothing but bad news about the Iris chains.

Someone had snapped a chain the other week, and probably quite annoyingly I asked if it was an Iris. "Yep", another one bites the dust.

I've tried Regina this time (which never ceases to amuse my 12 year old), the juries out on that one, can't tell until I've had it a while.

I've not got a particular recommendation, other than the Renthal R1 which you'll obviously pay through the nose for, but in my view I would avoid Iris.

Max, don't even consider getting an Iris chain. I had one snap on my bike, which resulted in a nice backwards journey over 3 fair sized rock steps on a steep hill and landing in a pile of rocks at the bottom. I was lucky to get away with just a cut arm. I have since heard other such stories. It really is just not fit for the purpose. AVOID!

I had an Iris chain, it snapped after about a year from new. Have used DID 520 HD (heavy duty) successfully. Iris definately not recommended.

I always buy iris and have never had one break. I like the lightness and freewheeling ie lack of resistance. I do change them maybe twice as often as say an r1 but they do have the advantage of half links.

Yeah, I think you'll always hear some good reports of any kit, otherwise they wouldn't be able to stay in the market, but there's just too many bad reports out there for Iris. I certainly won't risk one.

I never need half links these days, as big snail cams allow removal of a full link.

with 10 43 on a 4rt a half link is the only way to get the wheel where it should be, so there is some limit on choice.

as for breakages, i can only tell you how I find it

I thought I seen somewhere that IRIS had recalled a bad lot of chain that was improperly heat treated. Should be fine now, maybe?

I have used Iris chains in the past and not had a problem! To me they have been spot on. I have now changed to a Regina chain (in the last month - for no other reason other than just a change) and it seems spot on too! I've never heard of any problems with Iris chains until now. There's always a first for everything.

I feel like I've got it in for IRIS a bit, but it's the one product that really stands out for bad reports. Just search for IRIS, you don't even have to put 'snap' in the search, and here's a few recent ones, none of them by the same people, some of them containing multiple reports of snapping:

To add to that, I've seen two snap at trials, including the one where I predicted it was an IRIS just because it had snapped. I'll be getting the heavy mob turning up at my door to silence me, but with a bit of luck they'll come on bikes and only a few of them will make it

I have not heard of anyone else around here having a problem ...but...I've got to say it how it is so....

..Had an Iris, that snapped,lashed my clutch slave cylinder,lashed my flywheel cover and lashed my heel (that really hurt ).

It proved to be bloody expensive using an Iris chain.

I am certainly not on the payroll everyone of my chains has been bought and paid for by me and I honestly have never had one break.

In fact this year in france I bent a sprocket and stretched a chain and it still did the last day, so they do seem ok for me and raga.

Always rivet in a half link too!!
