Thinking about giving my 199A a face lift over the winter.I,m kicking around going to the 199B color as the A model is just too much blue for me.If I do should I cut the rear frame loop off like the B ? It does look better to me,but I kind of hate to ruin the originality of the A.In my thinking the loop also helps keep a little rigidity back there also.My other color scheme idea is silver frame,red tank and side panels with white fenders.

 

Any opinions are welcome.

Hello scot i have a 198A frame painted silver and as a red 159 Air box i have the Engine that's just been rebuilt i have the red mudguards new. regarding the loop if it was me id leave it alone but if they are look off properly and shaped the same as a 199B they do look nice.

I personal would leave the loop, it's not necessary to cut. I would too leave the colour set up, it's a 199A so why hide the heritage. If you have the British tank you can play around if you have the PE unit there is no easy real way to repaint that unit which really will hold in the future.

 

For personalisation may be you might paint the swing arm silver, take off the paint of the fork legs too so it matches again, Then take off the paint of the side cases of the engine, that makes it more personal but leave the original appearance.

 

There are lot's of pictures of rebuild 199A with many different coulor set up's around, see: google pictures "Bultaco 199A"

 

 

Bottom line, it is your bike do what you want. I would leave the loop in place but this is based on my opinion  that they look better that way, Just my point of view.

I cut the loop off on one of my 199A s, but I have kept the loop to weld back in place if I change my mind at a latter date. Some of the factory 199A s had the loop removed all the way back to the seat and had white guards

Well scott i had one of the 199's new and back then we did cut the loop off, as much as anything because the comerford boys did first and we copied as far as i remember.

So nothing radical in yoiur suggestion, and if your going to ride  and use it why not!

As i said if it's done properly like sherpa 325 bike witch looks very nice by the way you will have a nice looking bike.

Thank you to everyone for all of the input.I have wanted one of these for decades and don,t ever plan on selling it so I guess keeping it stock isn,t a real issue.

 I do agree with Glenn, the main thing is to get out and ride it!

Scott- I am just finishing my "newer" Bultaco and it is the same situation as yours. It is a 250 motor in 325 frame. Odds and ends changed so I got rid of the black engine paint on the cases,but keep the fork sliders black to match the exhaust on a different look.  Hope this photo gives you some ideas as to the colors your thinking of.  I have a standard red tank that looks good on it and was thinking of white side panels as I could never match the polished but worn out Bultaco red. The world has enough beautiful blue ones, indulge yourself. Cheers LarryNZ

Just looked up your bike in your gallery (pausing a bit as we are on our yearly X-mas rally) and it looks to be perfect!

As already formerly stated I wouldn't do anything to the frame or color wise it's in great shape. The bike could have or show some more use indeed. Three little things I would do replacing the seat cover then put the right rubber to the kick starter and at last ad a front number plate between the stanchions as it looks a little bit naked there. Then ride it so it looks a little bit more used. I haven't done any paint repairs to my SWM and like the rubbed of places near the foot pegs and tho will too happens to my Bultaco or any other bike I own.

Larry what is under the blanket with the alloy wheel and disc brake,looks italian or late spanish.
