May 28, 201610 yr Hello, I've recently bought a Sherco 290 and I'm concerned at the noise the engine makes.I'm new to Trials and 2 strokes, can someone please tell me if this is how they're supposed to sound? Thanks in advance.
May 28, 201610 yr No that's not how it should sound. I was expecting to hear rumbling main bearings but that sounds more ominous, I'm picking it was put away with some water sitting in the motor or airbox at some stage
May 28, 201610 yr Author Personally i think its a worn top end bearing, but i might be wrong. parts ordered, so time will tell.
May 28, 201610 yr does it sound that way while riding? take it off the metal stand and see if t heres a difference. i didn't hear anything you might be hearing from that video. you do have oil in the gas ? properly ?
May 31, 201610 yr Sounds like a stock Sherco of the year. Has some wear, naturally. Just ride it. Barring things changing this is a non issue.
June 1, 201610 yr I agree with cope. My '13 250 sounded like that for two years, I sold it to a friend and it still sounds like that. Ride it!
June 1, 201610 yr Author Thanks guys, I couldn't live with it. With a little motivation from my son, 'Get on with it' I stripped it. There was piston slap, and on closer inspection found the barrel was scored and had sustained damage. Best option new piston and reconditioned barrel from Trials and off roader's, £299. Posted mine off and waiting return. Message to buyers, be careful what you buy and who you buy from. Not all sellers are honest.
June 1, 201610 yr Unless you were told that the barrel and piston were new (which obviously they weren't) what information were you given that makes you suspect dishonesty? Plenty of people aren't mechanics and aren't going to be able to tell a buyer with any certainty the condition of the motor internals (and even the ones that are good mechanics probably aren't in there poking around often enough to say so either).
June 18, 201610 yr Author Piston and cylinder arrived, together with gudgeon pin, clips, gasket set, small end bearing and all for £300 plus £10 P&P. next dat delivery,Thanks to Tony @ Road&Trials (01226391557) Went together very easily and i'm no expert. ' Cover the engine with a rag when fitting the gudgeon pins or they'll be lost forever'. Couldn't torque to settings as my wrench wouldn't go so low, so used good old 'feel'. Fired up 2nd kick. Sounds and goes right now. Took about 2 hours including coffee break. Job done.
