Normandale changes

Im not a fan of lots of things that others choose to do but the popularity over the last decade of the normandale and the fact that lots of events including the SSDT have these classes means you are probably in the minority.

Im guessing you're not over 40? As you brought up George Orwell here is one of his quotes:-

“Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it.”

Breagh must be at least 65, possibly more.

  • I'm certainly no fan of age related classes. A more gemeral point I would make is that age related classes need questioned. What's over 40s all about? Dougie just won the Scottish aged 40 (Had th

Fair point Nigel. Though if I had dropped 32 where Graham lost 6 & James 16 on the same route I would be a very happy man indeed....

  • A friend of mine emailed the ACU to ask about the rule changes, his concern being that this might adversely impact the route for the o60s. The ACU responded (to their credit, within a couple of d

You're so cruel Ross but I'm nearer 65 than 40.

Feel about 80 with this man flu anyway there will be an instant cure when I hit the first section tomorrow.

I'm fine, though I was 54 on Tuesday and b40 never even sent me a card ,it hurts.

It's in the post, addressed Breagh, Fife. I'm sure it will get to you soon. Happy Birthday.

Seem to have got it just about right on the scores,The Acu "suggestion" that the winner of the 0/40s lose 10marks or less has been taken onboard, albeit only the 1st rnd. Be interesting to see if the rest follow suit.

I really enjoyed the trial and was superbly organised.

I  felt I rode well on 16 marks lost on easier route ( forgetting a soft 5 ) but some of old old twin shocks and older riders looked to be struggling a bit but wouldn't want to comment on their behalf .

Not sure on o40 but wouldn't want o50 route to be any easier. Graham won it on 6.

ignoring any possible debate thanks to all involved yesterday and to all organisers and observers for the rest of the year

The over 60's (which is sort of what this thread is about) was won on 32, care to look at your comment again? And as jimmy says above he wouldnt want his route any easier.

Clearly the "less than 10" has been missed in this class which then reinforces the original question "why has the acu done this"?

@hillary?

The trial was well organised, route marking good , observers really friendly and the sections were exactly as the acu specified , a good route for the over 50 and harder deviations for the over 40, no thought for the over 60 , not the organisers fault . I think all the events this year will be the same , it will be interesting to see if the over 60 numbers drop off? Its a shame the 50/50 route did not work .

Does anybody know if there is an ACU suggestion for the winning marks lost for the o50 / o60 route?

the point about not wanting it any easier has been sort of addressed, half of the top 10 o40 won't see 50 again, there is a choice, need to make sure the o60s have one too.

the 50/50 didnt work from what riders have said because events were too hard not the 50/50 aspect

Maybe the 50/50 has been dropped to soon.

If O40 routes have been eased for 2017 then by default the 50/50 route for the O50s will have eased and the O60s would have had a steady ride as half the section can be set out exactly for them and the easier O50 section should then still not be too hard.

Its not necessarily the actual severity of a section which can cause issue but the style - a bit like when twin shock and modern bikes share sections - a big blast and climb to a younger/better rider (modern bike) who can hang on is an easy clean - if your not so brave or strong (or twin shock) then can be a big tumble from a height. A slippery rocky stream may take marks off the best O40 but could quite easily be cleaned by a good O60 rider.

Getting routes balanced correctly at club level just on a variety of abilities can be difficult -even more so when age is added to the mix.

Still think is a great series and last Sundays trial really enjoyable and well organised.

Would there be a case for 3 routes then? Standard for 0/50s, Hard for 0/40s + the 0/50s that want to ride it because as mentioned a lot 0/50s ride the hardest route & then easier for the 0/60s. All could ride the standard route with age related variations in the sections. Imo it wouldn't add to the section marking out process unduly and everyone hopefully rides sections to suit both ability and age.
