Hello all. I'm happy to have found this site. I have done some reading and you all seem like smart people with a large base of knowledge regarding the world of Trials. I have a question and some pictures. I have always been very interested in Trials. Especially vintage trials. I'm 28 but I grew up around vintage trials, motocross and vintage racing all of my life. My dad was a big time Motocross rider before I was born. I got to see a lot of his pictures and sit on a lot of his bikes. Anywho. That's besides the point. I picked up what I believe is a 1975 Honda TL250 from a guy for a great price. It was mostly complete so I figure I can't go wrong with this thing. I've …

Hi, My ty250 has plenty of power, but only at the bottom end of the gears, as soon as i hit half revs and upwards it just doesn't gain any power at-all, which means i resort to staying in the bottom end of the gears. At first i thought that this was obviously how the trial bike was designed, not the top end aggressive nature like a motocross bikes. But my friend has one also, and pulls through the gears no problem. I have a ty175 also and i sometimes think that it is definitely faster than my 250, no power issues at-all. I have changed the gearbox oil, put in a new spark plug, cleaned and checked my air filter and cleaned out my front exhaust but to no avail. I dont w…

New seals are arriving on Friday for a Saturday install. popped the stator off with no difficulty, old seal was sitting crooked on the crank, when removed the back was pretty worn and the spring was half out of the seal, likely due to wear and it sitting crooked on the crank itself. Everything else looks to be in pretty good condition. I have ordered both crank seals just in case but don't have a clutch holding tool to do the clutch side seal so may have to wait, unless it can be done without removing the clutch basked....does anyone know if it can be? or does the clutch have to be pulled to get the old seal out and new one in? The clutch side seal appears to be okay as I…

Today I finally got both TY250s working and was chuffed to buggery. But one wouldn't select any gears so I gave the lever a hefy push, and it sort of fell off. The shaft snapped leaving about an inch sticking out. First thought was to get it welded back on, but there is aforementioned oli seal about an inch away. Is welding a possibility ? Anyway, I got the engine on the bench now and merrily started stripping it down. Got head and barrels off before me belly told me it was food time. I haven't done any engine work reallly, since my racing days in the 80s I noticed that the casings split vertically, not horizontally like my old LCs and YPVS Yamahas. Do these engines…

Hi, just purchased a 1975 ty80 as a christmas present for my girlfriends boy and also as a little project for me!!! The bike runs well but there are a few issues and needs some advice 1. the kick start has started to move on the splines of the kick start shaft. It just about grips but can only see it getting worse. How much work is it to change the kick start shaft on the bike? Ive never 'got' into an engine before so complete newby to this. Is it an easy job of just dropping the oil, laying the bike down, taking the case off and replacing the shaft and seals. Or will i have to remove the engine from the bike and completly dismantle the engine? Another option i thought …

hi i own a Yamaha Ty80, my bike has sat in the garage for 4 to 5 years with no use what so ever as i grown up and got bigger bikes, but its a shame for it to sit there so therefore i am currently restoring it. Im only 16 so i have limited knowledge on these bikes but when i stripped the bike took carb of petrol tank and so on there was a form of green moss in and around the tank so i cleared it out etc cleaning progress. the carb was terrible and ive never seen one as dirty as this. i cleaned the carb very well and unblocked all passages i.e fuel pipes etc. the bike is now looking well and the spark is very good. the problem is that when i kick the bike it feels like it h…

Hi all, looking for confirmation on the following question: My daughters TY80 has developed an idle problem, I cannot seem to control the idle speed at all with carb adjustments. I cleaned all the carb jets thoroughly and it was no better so fearing it may be the flywheel crank seal I pulled the breather hose andput my finger over the endand the revs immediately calmed right down, when I remove my finger it revs high again. I assume this means a crank seal leak is gone, can anyone confirm the diagnosis please. Secondly, is there anything else I need other than a new seal and flywheel puller? Thanks in advance for any advice! Winter in Canada means I have some time to…

Was out getting the TY ready for Boxing Day and riding round the garden and after using the front brake the front would lock up with the brake lever released and the lever was solid. Then the next time I used it the lever was fine,it has done this previously at events but has never locked the wheel before. It has a brand new cable and the shoes are good(could the drum be worn needing over- sized shoes).Any ideas ??? cheers the noo Brian

Hi, having problems with the tick over and running of our ty80. The bike won't tick over properly. The revs seem all over the place on tick over, itll start reving itself up or just die. When you twist the throttle and then let it go sometimes the revs take ages to drop back down. This also happens when riding it. When driving around the field, after 5 min it also bogs and then cuts out. It then wont start even with choke on. You have to wait for 5/10 min then for it start again!!! I've done all the normal things like cleaning the air filter, taken the carb apart and blown everything through and cleaned it. Also checked the float level and that's fine. The bike runs best…

The bad news came this morning, I need a 3rd OS piston ( and ring ) for my 250 Mono. I didn't find one and I am told an IT ( or YZ ) or a TS piston would fit with modif made to the cylinder and head. Quite a few post are scratching the subject, but if someone as done the job with good result I would apreciate the details. Of course my first choise would be a 3rd os TY but ... I also will change the rod , but replacement is avalable. There are 2 different type of IT piston, the one with the '' arche '' is suppose to be beter but wear faster. I don't realy use the last bit of power of the bike since I am an average rider. So TS or IT and if IT, withc one choose? A couple…

Anyone fitted one of those after market one piece fibreglass tank covers come seat for TY Monos? Curious about the quality, fit, durability etc. Any feedback appreciated. I have a Pinky with ugly stained plastic tank, hence the idea of improving the look as the tank cannot be cleaned up (so I'm told). Thanks guys.
