Montesa

  1. Started by johnnyboxer,

Looking around the 315............ The front sprocket area looks vulnerable...............if the chain derails......bingo......... The clutch slave cylinder gets smashed.............along with generator cover and crankcase potentially. Is there any aftermarket protection (like a Mono TY chain saver) or does it never happen...............has anybody had it happen to them?? JB

Sorry if this has been discussed a million times..... Was recently riding a buddy's Montesa ('02 I think), and was surprised how grabby the clutch is compared to the gradual engagement of my bike. Is there a way to make the clutch less like an on/off switch. Otherwise, I LOVE the bike!

Hi to all Just bought a 98 Montesa and have some questions: Std Jet is 120 Pilot is 44 Needle Position is 3rd from Top The austrian Importeur tells me that this is the standard setting for the 98. But is this setting OK? It feels to me that she doesnt run right in upper range. Feels like she gets to much gas. Starting it is easy even without joke (allways 1st kick). Is this normal? Maybe a smaller Standard Jet would be better? I use 100 octane gas and mix it 1:80 with castrol TTS, Air-filter is fresh cleaned and oiled and the exhaust pipe new stuffed. Thanks, michael

Does anybody know the fork seal sizes for the 310 Cota circa 1990 with upside down forks(I'm assuming they're Marzocchi's). Mine are leaking and I would like to have the parts to hand before stripping them. Also, what oil level (springs out, forks compressed ? ect) and weight should be used, cheers.

Some debate on another thread. BVM said to run mine in on Castrol TTS @ 50:1 then change to 66:1 to run from then on................but never run the bike......... as the Montesa manual states with Elf @ 80:1 (too lean). However the Castrol TTS bottle says to mix @ 50:1 only Confused.......?? Think I'm going to run Castrol TTS @ 50:1 all the time................ Anybody shed some reliable light on the said subject............for the 315? TIA JB

Hi guys the question i have to ask is: is there anyway to tell if a preious Montesa(2000) model has been rekitted to look like a 2001 same for the 2002 can you tell the difference between a 2001/2002 just by looking at it or do you just have to go by what the seller says?? cheers Chris

I recently got a test ride on a 1998 Cota 315. I liked the soft power delivery right off idle and the feel of the engine. I heard that Montesa went to a "snappier" engine in 2000 or so. Just trying to get an idea of how the Cota has evolved over the years.

Had a question put to me the other day, and want to see what you lot know, if you were to leave a plate or two out of the clutch pack, would it make it softer ??? Don't go slating me, i was just curiuos what the result would be. I personally have no problem with mine (being a Haven pack). Gaff.

Montesa 315R On my new bike...........a couple of questions.......??? a) Do I change it after 'running in' for the 1st time.........OR after 3 rides as the comprehensive HRC manual suggests...........I would prefer to change after initial running in..........just to be on safe side... b)Elf HTX 740 is recommended in manual and dealer... BVM............recommended it as the correct oil and the best/only oil to avoid potential 'clutch drag' c) Any other oil that's just as good...........(because it's bloody expensive for tansmission oil @

Hi all, have any of you used fuel filters, (in line ones). The reason i ask is because i have just emptied my tank (duff fuel), and noticed loads of little "bits" at the botttom of the tank. I'm sure this won't do the carb much good, but am worried in case the fuel filter may restrict the flow. Any ideas?

  14. I've been browsing here for about 6 months on TA and TC. I read the topics with interest.........learning about the pros and cons of the new Modern Mono's. I last competed and rode a trials bike about 15 years ago in late 80's when I had a TY250R Mono Yam,having competed as a schoolboy in 70's and early 80's on a TY175 Twinshock............ Having been Greenlaning for last 10 or so years on Honda XR's...........I've become disillusioned and fancy a return to UK Trials......... So I've been deliberating about a modern Mono and settled on a post 2000 Montesa Cota 315............. for the following reasons :- a) Honda involvement in the bike Proven Reliability and bui…

When removing the skid plate on my '01 I found that the shape is changed a wee bit ( seems that the pre-owner did quite a lot of work on rocks...) Questions: When mounting an OK skid plate, would you have a non-contact between lower engine housing and skid-plate? What is the measured distance for bolt hole to bolt hole (rear to front) on a new skid plate? The 10 ton press needs a bit of a workout Stefan

Went to give my 2000 Montesa the usual quick once-over last Saturday after-noon (ready for Sunday), and found that the front brake was locked on, the bike was okay when it was last put away after being stripped, cleaned and re-assembled. The brake pads are at the most 8 trials old, as is the fluid, i originally thought that the front wheel bearings were binding, but remembered somebody had a simular problem with a 97 Beta Techno, and solved it by releasing brake fluid pressure from the caliper, as i did. My bike was then okay and all day Sunday, any reasons for this, could it have been the cold weather we have had lately ? Am i over looking something ?? Just curious. …

Hi all, does anyone remember, or know where i could get an anodised (preferebly) spacer to fit the front wheel of my montesa, replacing the speedo drive gubbins. I am sure i've heard that they are available somewhere, but can't remember where (old age?)

Hi all, My Mont is almost ready! After a 6 month lay-off to fit a new kitchen, move house then decorate the new house I finally found time to get into the garage and fettle the old girl! Aktive reed valves. Chrome down pipe. Rear suspension bearings all renewed. New back tyre. New Air filter. Oil change. .....and a good clean up! Note: Still got the footpegs to clean up/paint. She's already had a 4-pot caliper fitted up fornt, a straight pipe fitted to the silencer and the timing advanced. This old 1999 Mont is NOT short of power. PS. The chrome downpipe from Sandifords had the restrictor welded in place.....had to drill it out with a hole cutter. Ian.
