I have a '97 315R which runs pretty good, but needs a little help. When cold it will start on the third kick most every time. When hot, and it sits for 5-10 minutes (like when you're waiting for your turn at a section) it won't start without using the choke. The spark plug indicates that it's running pretty lean (whitish, light brown color). Another thing, maybe related, when I'm riding it with no load, level ground at steady speed, the engine, as best as I can describe it, oscillates. It sounds like "whump, whump, whump". Any problems there? I figured I'd ask you guys before I try to fix this on my own.

I'm trying to find out the year of a Montesa Cota 123 i'm lovingly restoring for my son to abuse the hell out of, projects nearly finished but I would like to know the year of it. Engine and frame no's are 32M00045. Any ideas will be appreciated. Cheers. Tried the Montesa web site but no help there.

I'm gettin an used montesa trial bike, and my biggest problem seems to be people who think their bike is newer than they really are.. Ie, no chrommed pipe, rear break calipers look like -98 (claming model 2001). So id would like to know if there is a way to identify the year of make, from a frame/engine serial number? -Manz

I have a 2001 Cota that has approx. 100.000.000 miles on her an' she is popping out of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Also leaks oil from between the skidplate and the cases. I think it could still be under warranty? Don't the manufacturers back their product any better than this? I tried wedging a screwdriver handle in between the skidplate and the sump but it still pops outa' gear. Maybe I should change the gearbox oil to a thicker weight? Would this eliminate the schreeching noise in the clutch when I downshift from 5th to 1st at 60 mph? Thanks in advance for your replies, Jay Lael.

Hi, The other week when riding I snapped the rear suspension linkage, yesterday I stripped the bike down, removed the broken part and thought I may aswell take the swingarm off and grease it all up. So, got the manual out and read up on it 'Remove pivot bolt'...no use what so ever. Came on here, and looked at the diagrams on Apex Sports, and printed off the Swingarm one. Now...I removed ONE nut (looking from the back of the bike, towards the front, the nut was the one on the LEFT hand side). It came off without much force at all. Now...onto the right hand side...it didn't budge at all, with too much force the rachet would slip and chew the nut up...didn't want that …

Does anybody know of a cross reference for the rear suspension bearings (2002 model) - or can you only get them from Montesa? Any other tips on overhauling the suspension?

Used to have an 01 Montesa which was a great bike although it suffered a bit from clutch drag and it tended to 'pink' a fair bit when warm. Although this didn't seem to affect the way it ran. And we are now considering getting an 04 model. Can any of you Montesa experts out there advise me on what changes there have been since the 01 bike? Thanks. Eiger.

I wanted to adjust the tickover on my bike...........ie turn it up a bit. However after turning the throttle stop screw (tickover adjust as I saw it) I found that no amount of twiddling will turn it up............either all the way in/out.........in the middle. Now it's worse and will not tickover on idle.................HELP Are these Dell Orto's more finicky than a Jap carb.............all previous experience is on Keihin/Mikuni on Jap bikes and they seem to do what it says in the manual..............however the Dell Orto doesn't ??? How do I adjust the rear suspension on my 99 montesa? I'd like to soften it up a bit, but id like to know how to go both ways. If i tighten up on the coil, that stiffens the compression, right?
