  1. Hi, Ty175 or Fantic 200. With the Ty you'll get more bike for your money, parts availability is exellent, they're very reliable and very easy to ride. also there's quite a bit you can do to improve them if you like tinkering, all adds to the fun. The Fantic's are a great bike but will cost more £'s for a bike of similar condition, again very easy to ride, parts availability ok and they're reliable. Either one would be a good buy, good luck.
  2. Thanks for that information Totalshell I shall certainly let the DVLA know of the situation with Fantic . As for Re-registering a bike once its been Q plated I've been informed that it shouldn't be a problem so long as when the bike was first registered it wasn't stated that it was made up with different parts. I also re-registered a Q plated XR250 a few years ago with no problems what so ever. Like Woody said it seems to be a bit of a lottery as to where you are and who you speak to, although in fairness DVLA at Worcester are being very helpful, fingers crossed for a successful outcome.
  3. you DO NOT need a dating letter from fantic. as above its fairly clear that the dvla publish a list of persons suitable to issue a dating letter. i ve never had a problem and i ve used bike clubs, collectors groups auctioneers and authors to write mine. I ve even seen letters faked though could nt condone such practices. I've spoken to the DVLA and they said that I either need a dating letter from Fantic motor or evidence that I have done everything possible to obtain a dating letter from them ( emails, letters, etc), before they will accept a dating letter from one of the clubs or groups that the DVLA recognise. This is the stage I'm currently at with my bike and I've spoken to the local DVLA in depth about this. As far as the DVLA are concerned if the company still exists ( as Fantic still do ) then they insist on a dating letter from the original manufacturer even if they don't import into this country anymore. I've been informed by the DVLA that they've tightened things up recently because vehicles were being registered with inaccurate information, hence the b*ll ache that I'm now experiencing ,
  4. I'm in the process of putting my Fantic which is currently on a Q plate onto an age related plate. I've been told by DVLA that they won't accept a dating letter other than one from the original manufacturer unless the manufacturer cannot themselves supply the evidence. If this is the case the manufacturer has to then supply you with a letter stating this fact, only then will the DVLA accept a dating letter from another source. As you have a dating letter from Yamaha you shouldn't have a problem and believe me I would very readily pay £40 to Fantic if they could supply me with one. Good luck.
  5. Hi, sorry if this subject's been covered before but can anyone advise me on the correct way to preload the shocks on a twinshocker? I have a nice new pair of Betor shocks which have preload adjusting rings but I'm only guessing at the amount of preload I use so the shocks may not be working as well as they might. Also how do you determine the shock spring rate Is this just down to feel and experience? I'm assuming if the springs are to soft it will bottom out easily, to hard and it will kick on small stuff. Thanks in advance.
  6. Oh gawd don't start, I can't see somebody smoking a fag at a trial is going to cause any health issues considering the amount of smoke a trials bike can produce! I don't have any problem with it so long as they're not blowing it in my face. ( I'm a none smoker by the way.) Pushing in on the other hand does p**s me off as nobody inparticular enjoys queuing. I've got no problem with riders getting the hurry on between sections but if there's a queue it should be joined at the back regardless of what the rules say. On the flip side though when you are waiting in a queue you get to meet and chat to new people and in a lot of cases make new friends, something that the queue jumpers I imagine don't get to do. So while they may get a slight advantage and may win the trial they've missed out on a possible friendship. Perhaps we're the winners afterall!
  7. Yup I saw this too. Had a good chat to Ian about all the mods he'd done to it and he says it rides really well. One of the biggest improvements he thinks is altering the handle bar position on the top triple clamp. Bike looks fantastic as well in my opinion, could well be doing a similar job to mine.
  8. Nice vid, lovely bike and a great soundtrack . Wish I was good on a trials bike and could play the piano.
  9. Thanks for the replies, will give Roy a try.
  10. Hi Andy M, yes it was, cracking trial wansn't it?
  11. Hi, I'm trying to register my Fantic on an age related plate. I've had a dating letter from Bill Pye but the DVLA and their pedantic bureaucracy won't accept it as dating evidence, they say I need an official dating letter from Fanticmotor. As there is no official Fantic Importer of motorcycles in this country anymore I can't see where I will be able to obtain one from. Has any body had the same problem and if so how did you solve it? Any advice greatly appreciated.
  12. Did anyone else think that the punters were asking a lot for the twinshock trials bikes? I saw a few that I thought were overpriced, anyone buy one?
  13. It may well be the stator, I had mine rewound on my 2001 model and when I put it back on it was still misfiring. After a lot of head scratching it was sent back and found to be faulty, they exchanged it and now its fine. Or as 0007 says find one that is running ok and swap parts over, it can be difficult I know. Best of luck.
  14. Hi, I was riding a trial last Sunday and on the third lap whilst waiting to start a section I had put the bike into gear and the bike took off with me still holding the clutch lever in. This happened intermittently for the remaining 4 sections where the problem seemed to rectify itself. Also at the time the clutch lever freeplay tightened up. Is it possible that the clutch was overheating causing the plates to stick together? Also could anyone advise me of the correct amount/type of gear oil I should be using. Thanks in advance.

    Fantic 200

Hi, I'm 5'7" and have 5 and a half inch bars which feel ok to me, I wouldn't have thought you need any higher but like a lot of things its what you feel comfortable with.
  16. That's not what I usually think of first! I'd get the TY and keep her happy.
  17. That might explain your results . Only joking you kicked my a*se big time last time out .
  18. Hi, think you're just going to have to persevere on this one, plenty of lube and it should pop on ok unless of course the rim is horrendously distorted. Good luck with it.
  19. Hi Lee, the green wire goes to the box at the bottom right hand corner of the stator plate, is this the trigger coil? I thought this was the "pick up". Took the stator off and tested the trigger coil (green wire) for ohms resistance it read 39.6. Do you think this low reading could be the cause? Thanks in advance.
  20. Thanks for all your input lads I'm sure we'll get it sorted in the end.
  21. Ok here's the skinny as our American buddies would say. Bike cut out at a trial went totaly dead. Eventually fired back up again ( no misfireing or iratic running ) rode another section bike died again. Once home tested for a spark nothing. Fitted new coil ( Ducati type ), new source coil, new spark plug, new ht lead, new plug cap. Still no spark so we're running out of options. The only thing I think it might be is the pick up but I've been told they are not available any more. As far as I'm aware I've wired everything up correctly ( checked it numerous times ). Also I've tried it with the kill button disconected, still zilch! Any ideas anyone.
  22. Hi Jon hows things? Can't try that as my Yams got electronic ignition. Have got a set of points off a 349cota that I could try and bodge on if you think it might work? All the best, catch up with you soon.
  23. Hi, done all that and still no joy
  24. Hi, yes I know that but rather than buy all the individual parts to rectify a problem it might be easier and cheaper to buy a complete stator kit. Also I've heard that some of the parts are no longer available.
