  1. Thanks Woody, I’ll just run her as she is until some become available, there seems a plentiful supply of 250 Gripper pistons though !!!!
  2. I’ve just purchased a Gripper and was wondering if they ever did a Workshop Manual for it, or are all the 350 engines the same bar the fact there’s no Cush drive on the mine. Also seem unable to source a piston at the moment, not taken the barrel off yet so not sure what size I need at present. Anybody got any out there? Thanks.
  3. Sparkieb, Im in the same boat, mines split on the bench waiting for bits to come. Ive got some secondhand and new parts from Mick at Trickey Trials, he has a website , but not the best as he' ll agree. He has tons of parts and a wealth of Montesa knowledge. I went to see him and gave me a few good tips on rebuilding mine.
  4. I’ll try and remember Barnesy, it’s a couple of months before we’re at that stage, just stripped her. I’ll try and include some images as I don’t think there are any of the internals exposed in this forum. ??
  5. Thanks feetupfun, I’ll have a better look through the old posts. ??
  6. Thanks feetupfun, I’ll have a better look through the old posts. ??
  7. I’ve done plenty of Bultacos but not one of these. Before I start cutting just wondered if anyone had any images of the exhaust internals from when they repacked theirs. Is it as important on these as the Bultacos to repack the front box for back pressure.
  8. Thanks Riffraffretro, sorry it’s possibly my mistake in using the word tension in the post, on reading it again it makes it misleading. The issue is the setting of the engagement point whereby the kickstart shaft engages and turns the engine over. With the spring removed the kickstart lever comes back from the resting point of the stopper on the top of the crankcase to the 9 o’clock position before it engages. As I remember from the last one I owned it usually engaged around the 11 o’clock position. That’s the crux of the matter, once that’s set the actual tensioning of the spring is easy.
  9. Can anyone help, once the crankcases are split with how to correctly set the kickstart tension. The one I’m renovating has obviously been split historically and it’s not been set up properly. In that I mean the kickstart goes back wards to the 9 pm position before it engages. The obvious has happened, the owner has been kicking at it and the kickstart stopper has holed the casing. Found a manual on line, but it doesn’t describe the process of setting it to get the correct tension. I’ve done loads of Sherpas, I haven’t split the cases yet, it may be obvious when I see the components face to face. Thanks in advance everyone.
  10. Has anyone, not necessarily moved them, but found a wider more modern alternative that fits without cutting and welding. Im use to Bultacos and they’re easy to move, but this little gem feels like your stood on a couple cocktail sticks. My memory is playing tricks on me as I remember them being a lot better the last time I rode one in the late 70s. Thanks everyone.
  11. Hell yes, all six Do i need the spring loaded mechanism, seems to work fine. There is still some play in the shaft if i pull it towards me, saying that the bronze bush and o ring in the casing may take up the slack thinking about it.
  12. CLEANORBUST, Any thoughts on the spring-loaded mechanism, do i need it on my 348, or was it just later models???????
  13. Hi cleanorbust, Just exposed the pawls, what do you think?
  14. Thanks guys, always helpful what an excellent site. Post an issue and you get a global response. I'm a little bemused by the selector issue in as much as i've taken the primary casing off and i've found that the line and dot correspond when in neutral. BUT, ive looked at other images of similar Montesa selectors and found some with a spring loaded wheel mechaism which is missing on mine. My frame number is 51M 3188 which i believe it indicates it to one of the early batches of production, is mine missing this part???????? The first image is my bike the second is an image ive borrowed to ask the question, am i missing this spring loaded mechanism? If I am missing this id like to bring it to the attention of the gentleman i purchased it from asap. Thanks everyone.
  15. Thanks feetupfun. Do you know what jets your using, also do you need to alter the inlet rubber or air box rubber?
  16. Ok folks, hate asking a question that’s been answered many times before, but I’ve looked back as far as 2016 and can’t find anything current on 348 carbs, so............ Ive just bought an early 348, I know they’re a bit Marmite, but it’s a nostalgia trip. It’s the last bike I rode competitively in about 1978 and I thought it’d be nice to relive my youth, also it’s never a problem adding another one to the collection ? She has the original Amal on at present. By the time I’ve replaced the slide, jets, etc, etc I’m half way to the cost of an Oko or similar. Someone since 2016 must have had this issue, researched the far end of all options and changed the carb or just re built the Amal. All thought and opinion gratefully received, but no negative comments on the 348 please, I know it’s limitations with weight, turning circle, headstock frame weakness etc, etc. But I had so much fun riding one all those years ago. Also it only selects 1st and 2nd at present, after the previous owner did some home maintenance. He didn’t split the cases so I assume it’s just a case of getting the selector set up right. I know there are a few posts on this subject. Thanks everyone.
  17. Thank you, it's actually for sale on here at present. I try and buy a basket case or one that's been stuck in a box for years every winter to keep me occupied in the garage. Ill renovate them and put them back into the market place so that we keep the Twinshock world healthy or they just keep getting broken up for spare parts. It's just a hobby and the price is just to cover the rebuild costs with a small margin for my time.
  18. I would also be interested in one, could you keep me in the loop. MAny thanks.
  19. Done a complete frame and engine strip down, the engine had new bearings throughout. only done 1139 miles from new so still on original Mahle piston. Found some old style waterslide decals instead of the new chunky vinyl types, bit of a bugger to put on. its like tissue paper. For the eagle eyed, got to put the exhaust spring on and the breather pipe for the primary case.
  20. After you’ve spent hours cleaning the carb send it away to be ultras sonically cleaned, it’s about the only way you will clean out all the old gunge and glaze. Hope it works for you twinshock ??. Theres nothing more infuriating than riding a bike with poor carburation .
  21. Thanks for the air box reply, time to help you. I replaced the points ignition on my 199b with electronic ignition and ditched the Bing, I know yours is an Amal for a 26mm Mikuni, it starts second kick from cold and first prod when warm. Ive spent ££££££ over the years rejecting old carbs and it’s IMHO a waste, your better putting your cash towards a new carb. I know a lot of lads with Bultacos using the Oko carbs nowadays and they said they work straight out of the box. The purists hate the electronic ignition and a well set up points Sherpa will start just as well, the thing with the electronic ignition is ‘fit and forget’.
  22. I’m currently renovating a 1979 325 Sherpa which has the small air box with the door on the side. I be heard a lot of negativetity over the years about them being to small. Would a later 199b be better? Will it fit? I intend to run a 26mm Mikuni on this bike. What do you guys use? Many thanks.
  23. Naichuff, thanks for that. Someone always knows the answer on here.
  24. Good morning all. Just waiting for the last few bits to arrive to rebuild the Cub engine. Just going through all the parts and found these four half washers in amongst the gearbox parts. Ive searched this site for an answer before posting to avoid duplicity , as I’m sure I’m not the first to ask this question, “ where do these go” ?, but was unable to find a post covering this. I have two approved Triumph manuals that Ive scoured but cannot find these half washers in any of the gearbox exploded views. Have I got them mixed up and they fit somewhere else? If someone could send me an image ideally I would appreciate it very much. Thanks everyone.
