  1. Two hours at the DMV only to be told that my VIN # doesn't pass muster because the 10th digit is an 'E', which according to them was only for the 1984 and 2014 model years (they're right). My bike is a 2004, hence the 'E'. 2004 in North America was a '4'. The Gas Gas Vin decoder shows the 10th digit as being a letter, so that's consistent. Bike has never been registered which may also be part of the problem. I have to take it to CHP but I'm sure they're not going to have any of it either unless I can furnish some solid evidence of the Gas Gas system. Anyone else run into this?
  2. Yes it's there. But the fuel screw makes no real difference an the idle screw is almost all if the way in meaning the pilot is not even within range?
  3. By the way those carbs came from the factory with a 107 main. It has a 110 in there now. Plug is nice an brown, hopefully a larger pilot will so the trick, she has the factory s36 in there now.
  4. Thanks for the replies. I put my beta techno carb on the bike and she pulls like an ape on crack. Much less popping and surging at idle too. The bike is an '04 year she has the VHST from an '03. I will try some new jets. Thanks again, I'll post if I get her working!
  5. I'm 6'3 and always use to put risers on my motocross bikes. I gradually learned over time hiwever that bikes are not designed around that type of set up, and if you change your riding style to work with the stock set up the bike works much better. It's for this reason I've fought the temptation to put risers on my trials bike. Force yourself to ride for a day with the stock set up. You may find that you can çlimb big rocks better because you can pull the bike closer to your chest before the bars hit. Give it a shot, it's free!
  6. I used the vin decoder and it says she is an '04 280. The cylinder has '28' on the side also. New jets ordered today, thanks! I'm going to clean out the mid pipe also with brake fluid... Because the guy at trialspartsusa recommended that and I have a bunch. I'm hoping this will preserve whatever packing is left in it rather than burning it out.
  7. Pilot is an S36 which is stock and was also recommended on the trialspartsusa site. Main is a 107, recommended is 110. Southern California weather, so 80 degrees and within 1000 feet of sea level. Here is a video of the bike from today. If the bike sounded as quiet as it does in this video I would be chuffed; you have to take my word for it it's really bloody loud! It's also fluffy off the bottom and when you crack the throttle blue smoke comes out the pipe AFTER the throttle is released.
  8. Ok, thanks for the input as always. My only issue is with the throttle closed and the bike idling. I thought that meant there is only one jet at play, idle/ pilot jet. There is also the fuel screw of course. Not sure if changing the main or the position if the needle would affect how cleanly the bike idles. So I can go up or down on pilot. Should I buy a jet two sizes larger, and another two sizes smaller and tune from there? I could stick my beta techno carb on there if it would even fit to see how she runs? Plug is a nice color brown. This is a dellorto VHST carb. Bike does not rattle when clutch is pulled in.
  9. Is the fan spinning the right way?
  10. This. I'm pretty certain the timing is stock and hasn't been fiddled with (an assumption). The problem is at idle with throttle closed. I talked to someone about a different pilot and he said the fuel screw covered the range of several pilot jets so if the screw is not getting me any benefit this is not the problem. The fact that the bike just sounds a bit clapped out and makes unremarkable power makes me think the top end is shagged. Now the worst part. A top end kit was quoted as $350. However these older bikes apparently used a discontinued piston and rings and so I may need a new cylinder too, total cost $650. Many thanks for ALL the replies, they were all read and appreciated.
  11. I'm having trouble locating the enriched plutonium.
  12. My TXT was almost impossible to kick through from the top. Loads of compression and I could barely get over the top of the kickstart to get going. Turns out the previous owner had put the kickstarter too far forward on the spline. I removed and put it back one tooth and it made all the difference in the world. Two teeth further back and the stroke would not go far enough. Something to check if you are not the original owner of your bike.
  13. Thanks so much for the reply. The bike has so much bloody compression that I didn't think about the top end. Considering however it really doesn't make more power than my Beta Techno this could a culprit. I think the bike has had a lot of use. I can do a top end myself but someone else would need to tend to the crank seals. Can I cheat on the top end and just put a new ring in to see if that is a step in the right direction?
  14. I'm at my wits end... any suggestions appreciated. I have an '04 TXT Pro 280. Took her to her first trial last weekend. The bike pops at idle so badly that she surges forward with each pop. Not helpful when trying to negotiate full lock turns. What I've done: -Cleaned all the jets and every hole in the carb with compressed air -Fiddled endlessly with the fuel screw (Dellorto VHST 26mm) -Cleaned and re-sealed the exhaust header gasket -Cleaned and re-sealed the intake -Checked the reeds -New plug -Put in fresh gas, clean filter, clean coolant -Repacked the silencer -Checked the jetting compared to suggested jetting Only thing I haven't done is clean out the mid-pipe, but the bike pops right from a cold start through to when she's hot. If there is an air leak elsewhere it's beyond my capabilities to check. I've had the bike for a week, maybe I just need to flip it? Only $1,900 so I don't want to put too much money in to her. The only option from here I can think of is to ship her to Lewisport to be checked out, but that's not a cheap proposition. Any ideas? Ignition?
  15. I would delete this post but I don't see how to do it! I found the problem (from another post). There is a tube on the carb that links the two sides. It has a big hole in it. I thought the hole was a result of the tube melting so I 'fixed' it with fresh tubing. Turns out that tube was designed with a big ugly split in it. Glad I didn't throw it away. Just put it back on and voila, no more leaking. Bring on fuel injection!
  16. You just solved a major headache for me, thank you so much! I did the same 'repair' and have been pulling my hair out the last 6 hours! Tube looked like it had melted - apparently it was designed that way.
  17. I have a 2004 TXT Pro 280. I took the carb off, a VHST Dellortto, and blew out every single hole and jet with high pressure air (maybe too much pressure in retrospect). I noticed when I took out the fuel screw and blew air through the resulting hole that air came out of the middle (right) hole in the mouth of the intake that the airbox bolts on to. Now when I turn on the gas, gas comes spewing out of this hole to the point that it filled up my airbox and started dripping out the airbox overflow! The brass float arms will raise up and shut off the fuel. The problem is that the float bowl is not even filling with gas, it all comes out this one hole on the front of the intake. Did I break something with the compressed air? Please help, I have a two day event this weekend! Edit: I'm reading elsewhere that there may have been a lead plug in this orifice which the compressed air may have blown out. Anyone know if this could be the case? Sam
  18. After getting my Beta Techno to stop popping by adjusting the air screw, I'm not having the same luck with the fuel screw (the small one next to the fat idle screw) on my 2004 TXT 280 with a Delorotto carb. The more I turn in the fuel screw (to lean the bike out) the less she pops. But she is still popping terribly. New packing will help but that won't cure the pop. Bike was used just a few hours after the last 5 years. I drained the gas and I'm using race gas and 75:1. Any ideas? Different plug? Clogged jet?
  19. I say 95% rider, 5% machine. I think Bou has an advantage with the tractability of the 4 stroke for sure. I bet if you put all these guys on the same bikes they would finish in the same order, but the gap from Bou to second would be less.
  20. I thought this looked quite good. Have you guys seen the trials events they do/ did in the middle of I think Paris, with 40,000 or so spectators? I just watched a brilliant video from 1994 or so with Steve Saunders competing on YouTube. I tell you what does make me cringe are those trials demos with the gear they unfold off a trailer. It just looks so naff. Seeing Lampkin riding that sh!te it just seems like it's so below him and we are whoring out our sport for some cheap exposure
  21. I have the fortune to ride in an absolutely epic OHV area near San Diego called McCain Valley. Huge slab Rick mountains with endless possibilities. I picked up trials earlier this year after many years of Moto. I was really feeling the flow on my trusty Beta Techno. There a parking area right next to a giant slab/ hill. You could roll up with a '15 CRF450 and it won't get nearly the attention that even a 18 yr old trials bike brings! People always come over to talk about it. Well a buddy of mine always advises against 'parking lot heroics' because you'll have a big audience to watch you fail. I think it's good practice for being 'observed'. Well I put on an impressive show today for my audience, hitting some technical climbs and some death defying downhills. Or so I thought. As I was packing up and feeling proud of myself, along come a couple of dudes on dual sports who proceed to ride everything I did, including some drop offs I hadn't considered! Gaaaa! I guess that, just like moto, someone else is always going to show up that's better than you. At least I didn't eat sh!t...
  22. Dang, no love from the board! You seem pretty knowledgable so this probably won't help, but on my '97 I found that you can clean up the bushing that inserts into the inside of the frame. Once I cleaned all of that up I could really crank down the bolt that holds the break pedal on and that took out a lot of the slop, whereas before if it was tight it would bind. For what it's worth my Techno brake works great!
  23. Sorry to hear about the crash. I've recently started taking my phone with me. If you are down and can't get up, you can make a call. If I'm really buggered and don't come home I can be tracked with the 'find my Iphone' app. Heal up soon!
  24. Thank you so much for the reply. To my amazement the bike fired up today and seemed to run fine. The thing that caught my eye was the de coke of the exhaust. The mid pope is chock full of the stuff and I had never ridden the bike wide open on those trails before. The fact that the bike is running ok today makes me think that is the problem. I'll get that sorted and see how she does. I would never have thought if this so thanks again!
  25. Great looking bike! Chain looks a bit tight?
