  1. got it all fixed up! we just swapped carbs. he liked the setup on the 06 so he gave me the 07 one, now it fires up second or third kick from cold, first once warm! now i'm ready for the season! thanks.......................................john
  2. good boots and a helmet should be first, gloves are nice also, practice balance even on the bike stationary with out it running, that is the key to trials! great balance, then you can work on tecnique. and practice, practice practice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......................john
  3. looks to me like they all mount to the right side? beta is on the left, if it was me depending on the condition? find some one who can tig weld and redo the old one, or some sheet metal and some pop rivets, they look quality but i ordered an aftermarket silencer for my 71 sherpa-t and the pic looked good but when i got it, i could of saved money and made it myself, but i'd investigate it a little more and find one for a bea techno, give ron commo a call at beta usa, he has an endless supply of all beta parts! hope this helps.......................................john
  4. hey! welcome, the betas do have some bugs to work out but they are very reliable and virtually bullet proof! i don't think there's a such thing as riding them too hard, actually they like to be ridden that way! this is a very helpful forum, you can learn a lot on here!..................................john
  5. can't agree with you more! i own it and it tells you everything from bar set up to stance and proper riding positioning to big 3 rd gear splatters! make sure you get the first one and not the advanced video, there are two available now, or you could get both and watch them back to back? very helpful for a beg./nov. rider.......................john
  6. Beta Rev3 Carb Problems can all be sorted by going through the info below... Mikuni Carb Setup By Billy Traynor The first area of urban legend is the two little brass outlets with the pink hoses attached. You may know these as the "over flow tubes". In reality they are not overflow tubes. While they may allow fuel to escape from them that is not there sole purpose of design. They are in fact atmospheric tubes. The main purpose of these tubes is to allow the fuel to reach atmospheric pressure. This means that when the pressure in the carb body (slide area) drops due to the negative pressure in the engine the atmosphere pushes (@ 14.7 PSI) on the fuel surface helping it go up the jets. click to enlarge.. There are two adjustments on the float level. 1. The tangs set the fuel level. 2. The little tab sets the travel of the tangs. The "brass tang" level should be set accordingly. Remove the float bowl and slide. Place the carb on a flat surface. Get down to eye level with the carb body and you will see two towers sticking up. One tower is the main jet tower the other is the pilot jet tower. Due to casting imperfections I will not supply an actual measurement. (This settings is visual and will vary from carb body to carb body that is why I will not supply an actual measurement) The brass tangs should project itself to the extreme left hand top corner of the lower tower or pilot jet tower. This sets the float level. We will now set the little tab that sticks out perpendicular on the brass tangs. The purpose of this tab is to stop the actual travel of the tangs downwards. This is important, as it will alleviate many anomalies once set correctly. One must know that the small pointed plunger that the brass tangs pushes up acts like a light switch. The gas is either on or off. With this in mind one need only have this plunger move enough to allow the gas to flow freely and then close when the tangs act upon it pushing up. Think of this! When you land off a large rock the weight of the floats push quite rapidly down inside the float bowl. This is known as gravity. The extended movement of the floats downwards tends to do two things. It moves the floats way down inside the float bowl allowing more gas than needed and it also causes some of the excess gas to be pushed up into the jets and into the engine. It also if not set correctly allows the float tangs to travel down to far. It is kind of like being inside a fast moving elevator and when it reaches this bottom it kind of makes you bend your knees. In other words the elevator has stopped but you are still going downwards. So how do you set this travel tab? Adjusting the travel tab on the carb will not stop the floats from going down but it will stop the float level tangs from traveling all the way down. This is important as the further they travel the more they are likely to stick. With carb back on the table and the float tangs set to the previous mentioned setting (top left hand lower tower) you should be able to lift the float tangs about 1/16 NO MORE. This bit of play allows the tangs to move away from the plunger jet safely. You will notice that the plunger jet has a springy feel to it. This is allows the float level tangs to still travel up and press continual against the plunger jet for a good seal. The first contact of this plunger will not necessarily close the plunger jet off that is why there is some additional travel afforded. The bottom line is that if the gas is coming out of the atmospheric tubes (overflow tubes to you) then the gas level is way to high to begin with. It is not that they are not shutting off it is purely that they are set to high. Keep in mind we are taking about the bike in static upright position with or without the engine running. The other thing I would highly suggest is that the pink hose ends be cut on a very sharp angle and small holes placed in the pink tubes. This will help alleviate the siphoning action if it does tend to flow out of the tubes. After all the levels and tangs are set correctly. There is still the possibility that gas will come out of the tubes in some rare circumstances. By cutting the ends of the tubes on a very sharp angle and piercing small holes into the tubes that siphoning action is somewhat cut off. This siphoning action can even after the floats have settled down keep it self self-going. Also you should withdraw the pivot pin (the pin the float level pivots on) about 3/8 of an inch and pinch it with some side cutters about 1/8 on an inch from one end and then slide/push it back in. This notched pin will help it stay put in its housing. These pins tend to vibrate out and hit against the side of the float bowl (look at the inside of the float bowl for witness marks to this happening). One other area of concern on the Beta is the two vent hoses coming out of the engine are far to near the float bowl. In fact mine were pushing against the float bowl this caused excess vibration into the carb body, which in turn plays havoc with the float levels. I solved this by cutting the cable tie and having them go around the carb float bowl. Thanks again to Billy T and to Brian Curran (kinell on TC forum) for the photos. I also have completed the modification of the overflow hole in the body of the carb as described HERE from KD Mototrials in Australia ... all has so far been perfect. Another link ... this time for routing of the overflow and atmosphere pipes. scroll down to the 2nd page.. mikuni pipe routing Visit the Trialscentral Forum from the above link...
  7. THATS A BETA! I ALWAYS RAN HALF VP RACING FUEL AND HALF 93 PUMP GAS, KEEP THE NEEDLE ABOUT THE MIDDLE, I RAN MINE AT 100:1. (THATS U.S. MIXTURES) BUT MY BIKE RAN GREAT, YOU JUST HAVE TO FOOL WITH THE FLOATS AND THE MIXTURE SCREWS, IT'S A PROCESS BUT YOU WILL LEARN TO KNOW YOUR BIKE A LOT BETTER, AND YOU CAN LEARN TO CLEAN YOUR CARB IN A FLASH! THERE IS A PAGE ON HERE UNDER BETA THAT SHOWS YOU HOW TO SET THE FLOATS AND ALL THAT, HOPE THIS HELPS...........................................JOHN
  8. i like the maxima 75wt. wet clutch oil it's extra light and has given me no problems, i tried atf and it's kinda thick and makes the clutch grabby. also check your clutch lever reservoir on the handlebar, make sure it is full, that can cause poor clutch action.
  9. it has mega compression, i'm a small guy and i have to really hoss on it to start it, since it has warmed up it starts a lot easier, and the slide has been filed, jerry did a lot of carb. mods while he had it so he's gonna either switch it back or swap me for his 07 carb.? don't matter to me as long as i don't get worn out before the event even starts from kicking it so much! thanks for all your help!
  10. yes, my guess is the stator, or try cleaning the screen in your petcock, does it still start? or is it done? the beta stators usually act up when the bike is hot, then are o.k. when you let it sit. (thats a good sign of it going bad) but bogging out on the bottom sounds like fuel deficiency, its starving at low revs cause there's not enough vaccume to suck fuel through a clog (dirty petcock) but when the slide opens there is enough vaccume to supply the fuel. but it's just a fix to a similar problem i had with my beta. (plus it doesn't cost $300.00 to fix) hope this helps....................................................john
  11. hey thanks for all the info, i apreciate it! yes jerry is a great guy, he has a lot of stories to tell, but yes i am glad to say he's my friend! i had so many different bikes to choose from to buy, but i know he has a life long history of trials and he likes to make things right, plus a new buddy to drink beer with!...................... thanks again...........JOHN
  12. yes it is jerry's, well was jerry's, anyways, i talked to him and he said he did file the slide on the air box side, and we did put a 36 jet in it, he normally ran a 33, very lean if you ask me but that's his set up? he really likes that set up, but hell for a guy in his late 60's you'd think he would be crippled from kicking? (ha ha)he also said if anything he would trade me carbs, my 06 for his 07? i guess he did a lot to get it just how he liked it so we could just swap? now is that something we could do? would it change a lot, mine is a delorto, i think his is a keihn? or whatever? i'm real glad to know those guys are willing to go out of their way to help, ryan read my posting and called his dad and told him to make it right! i'm glad for that! good sherco support! anyways that is what i found out, a little extra info, kinda sounds easier to just swap carbs. , if possible?..............................................john
  13. HEY MOST NEWER STYLE TUBES CHANGED TO THE METRIC SYSTEM, AND MOST TUBES ARE CONSIDERED COMBINATION TUBES, WHICH MEANS THEY WILL FIT MORE THAN ONE TIRE SIZE, THEY ARE EASIER TO INVENTORY THAT WAY, I WORKED IN A TIRE SHOP FOR 10 YEARS AND NEVER COULD FIGURE IT ALL OUT, ONE NUMBER IS VALVE STYLE, METAL , RUBBER, IMPLEMENT, OR TRUCK/ BUS, THE OTHER WILL TELL THE SIZE, FROM MY EXPERIENCE JUST ABOUT ANY 18 INCH OR 21 INCH TUBE WILL WORK, AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE METAL THREADED VALVE STEM, AND TRY FOR A SMALLER SIZE TUBE, IT IS EASIER TO STRETCH A TUBE THAN TO HAVE IT TOO BIG, THEN IT WILL CREASE INSIDE THE TIRE AND YOU RISK A BLOW OUT, CAUSE THERE ISN'T ENOUGH ROOM FOR A BIGGER TUBE TO FULLY TAKE SHAPE, ANOTHER THING PUT SOME TALC OR BABY POWDER IN THE TIRE AND ON THE TUBE, IT HELPS TO LET THE TUBE AND TIRE STAY SEPARATE FROM EACH OTHER SO IT ROLLS INSIDE INSTEAD OF FLEXING AND YOU WON'T PINCH THEM AT A LOW PRESSURE, WELL I HOPE THIS HELPS AS LONG AND DRAWN OUT AS IT SEEMS....................................................JOHN
  14. THE GUY I GOT IT FROM RAN IT VERY LEAN WITH A 33 IN IT, SO I HAD HIM PUT THE 36 BACK IN, HE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT HE MAY HAVE FILED THE SLIDE TO MAKE IT LEAN ALSO? HE'S A REAL OLD GUY, THATS WHY I GOT THE BIKE, HE HARDLY BEAT IT AT ALL, BUT I WAS THERE AND HE TOOK A 33 OUT OF IT, AND PUT THE 36 IN, HE SAID IF IT IS HARD TO START TIP IT OVER ON IT'S SIDE AND THEN START IT TO GET THE BOWL FILLED? HE CLAIMED THE 36 WOULD MAKE IT START EASIER BUT NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE, I LOVE THE BIKE, I HAVE NO REGRETS ON SWITCHING TO SHERCO FROM BETA EXCEPT MY BETA STARTED SECOND KICK NO MATTER WHAT, I WAS TOLD THE 36 IS WHAT SHOULD BE IN IT FOR WHERE I'M AT IN PENNSYLVANIA, THE MAN SHOULD KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT, HE FOUNDED OUR CLUB IN THE 70'S AND HAS WON NUMEROUS NATIONAL TITLES, AND HE WRENCHED ON HIS OWN BIKES.I JUST DON'T WANT TO CALL HIM EVERY DAY WITH THIS AND THAT ABOUT A BIKE I BOUGHT AS IS............................. IT'S PROBABLY A SIMPLE FIX? THANKS.......................JOHN
  15. HELLO, MY 06 2.9 IS A REAL PAIN TO GET STARTED WHEN I DON'T RIDE IT FOR A WHILE, IT IS STORED INDOORS AND WARM, BUT IT SEEMS I HAVE TO KICK IT FOREVER TO START IT? ONCE IT STARTS IT RUNS GREAT, COULDN'T BE BETTER?THEN I STOP AND IT WILL START UP AFTER A FEW KICKS BUT SOMETIMES I NEED TO CHOKE IT (WHEN IT'S WARM) I JUST DON'T GET IT ? IT HAS THE RIGHT JETS AND EVERYTHING, IT IS JUST A PAIN (ON MY LEG) AND TO SHOW UP TO RIDE AND MY BUDS OLDER SHERCOS FIRE RIGHT UP? SEEMS LIKE IT IS LEAN IF I NEED TO CHOKE IT TO START IT ONCE WARM? ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT, I JUST WANT TO WORK OUT ALL THE BUGS BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS! THANKS!..................................JOHN
  16. GO WITH THE 200! MY BUDDY HAS A 2000 SHERCO AND HE SWEARS BY IT! IT TRACKS WELL IN THE SNOW AND THE MUD, IT'S JUST AN ALL AROUND GREAT BIKE! IF YOU CHOOSE THE 125 I THINK LATER ON DOWN THE ROAD YOU'LL WANT A LITTLE MORE FROM A BIKE BUT THE 200 WILL BE PERFECT, I HAVE A 2.9 2006 AND THERE ARE WAYS TO TAME THE BIKE WITH REEDS AND JETS AND TIMING, OR A SLOW ACTION THROTTLE, I HAD A 250 BETA AND SWITCHED TO THE 2.9 AND MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND I'VE BECOME A BETTER RIDER, BUT IT'S YOUR CHOICE, GOOD LUCK..................................JOHN
  17. THE SPORT IS REALLY GROWING AROUND MY AREA, BUT AS FAST AS IT GROWS JUST AS MANY PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THE SAME OLD SAME OLD, FOR INSTANCE TRAVIS FOX, HE'S A PRO RIDER HE'S NOT THE BEST BUT REALLY GOOD, HE WOULD RATHER GO AND PLAY WITH MOTOCROSS THAN COMPETE IN TRIALS BECAUSE IT ISN'T FUN ANYMORE? OUR CLUBS AROUND HERE AREN'T THAT GREAT, MOST OF THEM PUT ON AN EVENT AND THEN SAY HAVE A GOOD ONE AND IT'S OVER! FIRST PLACE MIGHT GET A COFFEE MUG FOR THERE TROUBLES THATS ABOUT IT!!!! WHO GETS THE CHEESE? IT'S NOT FOR INSURANCE REASONS, MOST ALL THE MEMBERS ARE FRIENDS AND THE LAND IS OWNED BY MEMBERS? SO IF 60 PEOPLE PAY 20 DOLLARS TO RIDE, WHERE ARE THE SHIRTS AND TROPHYS? I THINK IT WOULD GROW MORE OVER HERE ALSO IF THE AMA WOULD GIVE US A LITTLE CREDIT OR SOME COVERAGE? ALL'S YOU HEAR ABOUT FROM THEM IS CROSS COUNTRY CRUISING AND BIKER CLUBS, NOTHING TRIALS? BUT WE ARE ALL SUPPOSED TO PAY THEM 40 DOLLARS A YEAR TO BE A MEMBER TO SOMETHING THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT? THERE ARE ALOT OF UP IN THE AIR QUESTIONS ABOUT RIDING OVER HERE, AT LEAST IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS?
  18. i HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY BETA, SOUNDS LIKE THE PLATES NEED ATTENTION, SCUFFED OR REPLACED, I'M GUESSING THATS A 2- STROKE? I WOULD USE 75 WT. WET CLUTCH OIL, MAXIMA HAS A GOOD PRODUCT LINE, AS FOR HOW TO DRAIN IT? I'VE NEVER DEALT WITH THAT BRAND OF BIKE, IT SHOULD HAVE A FILL PLUG AND A DRAIN ONE, GET ON THE FORUM AT RYPUSA.COM, ASK RYAN HE WILL KNOW ALL ABOUT IT! GOOD LUCK........................JOHN
  19. I HAD THAT PROBLEM WITH MY 99 BETA, I WAS TOLD IT WAS PISTON SLAP, I ADJUSTED THE CARB A THOUSAND DIFFERENT WAYS, NO GO, I TALKED TO THE GUYS AT B.R.X. AND I BOUGHT A CAN OF V.P RED RACING FUEL AND MIXED IT HALF WITH 93 PUMP GAS AND POOF THE PROBLEM WAS GONE! MY BUDDIES 96 GAS GAS 250 DID THE SAME THING, HE WAS GONNA TEAR THE THING APART THEN I HOOKED HIM UP WITH A TANK FULL OF MY MAGIC POTION AND HIS RAN FINE, MAY NOT HELP YOU BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND THAT'S WHAT I DID.......................
  20. YES I THINK THE TOP GUYS GET SOME INCENTIVE FOR WINNING, JUST NOT ENOUGH TO QUIT YOUR DAY JOB, GEOFF AARON SEEMS TO BE DOING PRETTY WELL FOR HIMSELF AND HE IS DEDICATED TO RIDING! I THINK MOST OF THE PROS IN THE U.S ARE SPONSORED FOR BIKES AND GEAR, NO MONEY UNLESS YOU WIN! JUST A FREE BIKE AND GEAR, I KNOW A FEW GUYS HERE IN P.A WHO ARE SPONSORED AND I BELIEVE THEY STILL WORK FOR A LIVING, BUT THAT DOES SOUND BAD, YOU ARE CONSIDERED A PRO RIDER BUT STILL HAVE TO WAKE UP AND DO A 9 TO 5 ER EVERY DAY, AND SQUEEZE IN YOUR PRACTICE AROUND THAT SCHEDULE, I THINK BEING "PRO" SOUNDS LIKE MORE OF A BOTHER THAN AN HONOR FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH, IT TURNS YOUR FUN HOBBY INTO A JOB BUT NO REWARD BUT A PLAQUE AND YOUR NAME IN SOME MAGS? YOU'LL WAKE UP SOME MORNING AND SAY WHERE'D THE FUN GO? FEELING PRESSURED TO WIN, WIN, WIN, I'M NOT LABELED PRO BUT I HAVE A LOT OF FUN DOING WHAT I'M DOING, AND THAT FEELS FINE TO ME!!!!!!!!
  21. LOOK AT GEOFF AARON! HE'S A GORILLA! BUT STANDING ON THE BIKE YOU SHOULD BEND AT THE KNEES TO SUIT YOUR HEIGHT, I'VE NEVER SAW ANYONE RIDE STRAIGHT LEGGED, UNLESS A FIRST TIMER, ANY ALTERATIONS YOU MAKE TO THE BARS COMPROMISES THE BALANCE OF THE BIKE,
  22. I AM A MEMBER OF D6 AND WE HAVE A BUNCH OF VINTAGE EVENTS EACH YEAR, CHECK IT OUT!
  23. TRY RYPUSA.COM, THEY STOCK ALL KINDS OF LEVERSAND STUFF, MOST LEVERS ARE UNIVERSAL, IF THAT DON'T HELP TRY BOTTLERUNXTREME.COM, THEY ALSO STOCK ALL THAT STUFF ALSO, HOPE THIS HELPS!!! GOOD LUCK!!
  24. YES, I WOULD GO WITH A 200, MY BUDDY RIDES A 99 200 SHERCO AND HE RIDES CIRCLES AROUND ME IN WET OR SNOWY CONDITIONS, MY 2.9 JUST SPINS, HE'S HAD IT SINCE BRAND NEW AND WON'T GIVE IT UP FOR NOTHING, I RODE IT JUST TO SEE IF IT WAS ME OR MY NEW BIKE,? YES IT WAS THE BIKE! NO TRACTION, BUT I STILL LOVE IT, I WAS A BETA 200 OWNER FOR SOME TIME BUT, THE QUICK PEP OF THE 2.9 IS WHAT I NEEDED, I'M NO PRO BUT I HAVE ADVANCED QUITE A BIT SO I WENT TO A BIKE TO SUIT MY NEEDS, BUT A 200 IS PLENTY GOOD FOR ANY CLUB RIDER, SOMETIMES THE EXTRA POWER HURTS YOU MORE THAN HELPS, IT BLEW MY MIND TO SEE HIM RIDING CIRCLES AROUND ME ON A 99, I HAVE AN 06! BUT IT'S ALL IN THE MOTOR!!!!
  25. i JUST PURCHASED AN 06 SHERCO 2.9 AND I GOT A NEW REAR FENDER AND DECAL WITH IT AND IT REALLY LOOKS LIKE A PAIN TO PUT THE DECAL ON, I'M WONDERING IF THERE'S ANY TRICKS TO IT OR IF I SHOULD JUST WING IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS? IT IS SO BIG AS A ONE PIECE DECAL AND IT'S STIFF, AND DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT WILL FIT RIGHT? IF I LINE THE FRONT UP THE BACK IS OFF AND VICE VERSA, JUST CURIOUS IF THERE'S ANY TRICKS OR NOT? THANKS FOR ANY HELP!
