Erm get a grip, would you step over an old lady who falls in Sainsbury's or drive past a crashed car, I wouldn't.

Unless you are completely asymptomatic, which is not a common as you'd think then you will have symptoms, if you've lifted your head up and taken your tin foil hat off you'd recognize you have symptoms and not attend anything. It's as easy to social distance at a trial as it is anywhere. If an old boy falls in a stream with his bike in top of him I'd help him, then do something crazy like wash my hands in said stream or maybe reach for hand sanitizer. The reality is you either lock yourself indoors forever or get out there and be sensible. This virus is not going away in the near future so be sensible, safe and sane. Get used to living with it or you'll live in fear.

Im certainly not saying walk over an old woman in sainsburys, quite the opposite. The difference in your analagy is we would both be wearing masks in the supermarket wouldnt we? I do not have a tin foil hat on, ive been working every day since january, except weekends so dont need any advice on "getting out there".

my concern and your lack of it is for others in trials, and in general. It is impossible to say whos asymptomatic (however small a %) who might carry the virus and relying on common sense if youre feeling slightly unwell when so many have so little could be a recipe for spreading the disease. Only yesterday there were nearly 1000 new cases, and whilst all of us want to ride again its not as easy or simple as you make out and really does it matter if we wait a few months?

Apart from signing on I can't see a problem, the W.H.O Actually now say 1 meter apart and it's how long you stay near someone, the 2 m distance has been reviewed, most of the time, if not all the time I don't think at a trial I'm nearer than a meter anyway, if everyone brought their own pens and wore gloves then signing on issues are resolved

if you cant see a problem you dont understand trials? What happens when a rider gets stuck under a machine or foot jammed in wheel? we cant social distance and help him or her? an older observer falls over do you help them up? A rider breaks down at the bottom of a stream do you help push the bike out?

That's a good point, although the sweat is generally evenly distributed after 30 mins or so (ie. 100% coverage) :P

I'm pretty sure the cause of my hot feet is it being very hot outside.  I'm riding in shorts and a sweat wicking t-shirt, and not before about 7pm because before that it's a recipe for heatstroke.

id love to do a back to back test between "a sweat wicking t shirt" and a good old fashioned loose fitting cotton one....?

I want to thank everyone again for their input. I did get the bike back from the dealer a few days ago and took it on an easy trail ride for about an hour to put some time on the engine and gearbox. I spent most of the time being very careful how I made each shift especially the 4th to 5th shift. The noise is still there but I am warming up to idea that that the noise is normal. Thanks mbeers6 for the video. I listened to the audio using headphones and the sound that your bike made during the 4th to 5th gear shift is similar to what my bike is doing. It does seem like the sound that my bike is making is louder. I would not describe the sound as a clunking sound. There is a definite buzzing of gear teeth trying to engage at the start of the gear change.

In a few days I will try to make a video like mbeers6 did. If the audio accurately captures what I am hearing I will post it.

If nothing else this thread might help someone else if they have the same concerns that I had. Before I asked all of you for help I spent a few hours searching the internet, YouTube, and motorcycle forums for some information on this issue. I did not find anyone that mentioned a difficult shift from 4th to 5th gears on these bikes. That made me think that there was a problem with my bike.

try changing with your heel, this might solve the grinding issue, the only way it can grind is when its not engage after being released which goes back to my "throw" comment.

5th to 4th is fine. All of the other shifts are fine. Thanks for everyone's input on the problem. I'm going to the dealer today to get the bike and make sure that the issue is documented. Maybe the noise is "normal". If it was just a hard shift with a clunking sound/feel I would be inclined to believe it. But the buzzing/grinding of gear teeth just doesn't seem good or right.

Grinding is you not shifting positively i feel, very difficult to diagnose remotely across the atlantic!!!

There is a one guy local to me that has a 2018 and that is what sparked my interest in them. Seemed like a really great bike. Downside is price and potential complexity and no dealer anywhere close. But still might be worth it.. The fuel injection is both a pro and a con I guess.

i think youve answered your own question back up with a 2018 vertigo is essential

Thanks everyone for the responses. Unfortunately I don't have the bike right now. It is at the dealer that is over 200 miles away. I'll probably get it in a few days. It is looking like the dealer is confident that the grinding noise is normal and that there is not a problem with the bike.

I have two KTM enduro bikes. I would say that I am a strong intermediate rider. I use clutch a lot to fine tune the power coming from the engine. Especially in technical terrain. With the Gas Gas the clutch and shifting seems really nice with the exception of the hideous grinding noise when shifting (using the clutch) from 4th to 5th. If one of my other bikes started making a noise like that I would stop riding it immediately.

I will make a video of the problem and post it if it turns out ok. I'm going to try to find someone at KTM/Gas Gas that I can email the video to so that I can document that the issue was present during the 30 day warranty period. Which ends on July 25.

That I respectfully suggest could be the problem, you are used to an enduro slick change. Try to change positvely between 4 and 5th and insert more throw with you foot. Certainly as myself and others have said 4th to 5th isnt as smooth as all the others. is 5th to 4th ok?

it dosent say that its full (that i can see )  but there's no option to download an entry form so guess it must be ! food for thought next year then on both those 2 trials , the oct one must be the better of the 2 if they got that amount of entries by june !

Ardeche is very french and less well known and a fair way down so I wouldnt read too much into the 600, bi annual doesnt help.

  9. Steve, how much have you ridden the bike? This 4th to 5th is a jump as you say and as a result is the necessity to make gentle changes possibly with lower revs, but positively as from memory the throw seems more on this change, if that makes sense?

There has been a big effort to get as far as possible a small and lightweight gearbox, so it definately needs a certain amount of sympathy and awarness. if it goes up and down ok and you get the gear every time then i wouldnt worry. Certainly do not consider clutchless changes. Have you ever droped the bike or bashed the gear lever on a rock?

The down side is I have had a problem like this a few years back and it started with 4th to 5th changes, upside the gearchange casette is aneasy and inexpensive cure.

thanks for thee reply nigel , was planning on doing it but don't think we can now as the time off work and childcare cant be sorted , maybe next year , plenty of time to research it etc .

    andy

bi annual afaik. I think it would be a much better trial than sardent is now, but if you can ride well you need to try something in spain, santigosa, or maybe italy.

  11. Good, not many brits (if any) go, subsequently its good if you can speak french. They were strict on documentation lights etc. I went a couple of years back and similar to sardent. Its high up so weather in may isnt always good, i got hypothermia!

Think entries have closed for this year, a long way down and tricky to find. parc ferme. Not much accomadation at start except camping?

  12. Im not sure anecdotal evidence of one event, particularily when 99.9% of others have a different experience is worth jack sh!t.

Montesa honda have no love from me but to say the gearchange shaft is glass............?

As far as I know there aren't any clubs in southern Portugal, although there are riders. I'm meeting up with a french guy this coming winter and I know that several 4RTs have been sold locally. If I moved there I'd have a go at trying to contact others there.

My thought process was there are likely quite a few places to ride in Portugal, thanks to the miles of off road tracks. However with the Spanish border 90 mins away at most, then a weekend trip to ride somewhere around Seville/Cordoba/Granada might be a possibility.

I know nothing of the trials scene in Spain other than a few of them are 'ok' at riding..... ?

Id be careful, 4m from a road is illegal in Spain afaik, so you need to know where you can go.

Thanks, that's a good suggestion, I'll send him a message.

    Thanks.....

Is it a case of joining the club and then you can practice?

Do you know if hold trials without the need for a national licence?

I'm thinking of maybe moving to the Algarve where there are no clubs and so heading into Spain for my fix.

if you move to the algarve i think trials clubs etc will be very difficult, even with a long journey into spain, trials in the south are sparse.

  15. It is almost as important to understand what you can do to a bike to alter it to suit YOU and your riding style. Trials and trails are very different set up.

I would be spending any spare$ i had on speaking or getting someone to show me how to set the bike up. If you can ride it fast the set up will be a million miles away from sections in a creek for example.
