Trials Inc.
I expect to see you at the next event!(I'll be on the red Fantic Twinshock)
Trials Inc are a great bunch of guys
Dayton and Newark Oh. were major fun events!
Call Rock Logic Trials at 6142038514 they will get you started, likely will take you along for their next ride.
when I get the property I'm working on cleaned out a bit more you can come over to south central Indiana and ride with us(provided you have medical coverage, gotta protect my landowner!)
-
Start by watching videos here:trials training center-how to ride trials
Trials riding ain't like other types of riding, you need to relearn(but it will drastically improve your non-trials riding!)
Go to events, make friends, ride with them.
Post your location, someone will offer to take you riding with them, trials people are great!

Wrist braces made my issues worse,I just concentrated before sleeping to tell myself not to curl up my wrists(took a few months to train myself). What absolutely fixed my wrist issues was switching to oversize gloves, the gloves that fit nice and felt good when trying them on would tighten up during a race.I've got major big hands for a average size guy(2xxl gloves are sometimes too small depending on the gloves) plus I'm a mechanic so my hands never got a break due to working with them all week and riding on the weekends. I was buying XL gloves 'cause they felt like driving gloves when I tried them on.
BTW,any old trials bike will do,I advise buying as soon as possible,I'm kicking myself for not doing it 30 years ago...would've been a helluva better racer and rider had I started trials back then!
-
Dunlops D803 are dirt cheap if you shop around, seem to work quite well enough(my old Fantic twinshock amazes me the places It hooks up) shouldn't pay more than $130 for front and rear plus shipping
Just because your bike is vintage doesn't mean you should handicap yourself with a dualsport tire,Plus the MT43 cost almost as much as the Dunlops
-
Man,what ya talkin' about,I won my class first trials ever.......cause I was the only entrant!
BTW,the property I showed Bill Super on saturday likely has 50 sections easy, found tons more rocks and rock waterfall climbs...
-
Do you have experience with classic bikes? You'll need to be able to fettle drum brakes, unstick stuck bearings, true wheels, massage clutches into releasing and engaging and more.It might be advisable to just pick up as modern bike as you can afford and spend your time working on your riding skills before undertaking the vintage twinshock experience as dealing with wonky brakes and clutches will inhibit your learning curve.Hell,I've been riding off-road for 40 years and I've decided to pick up a 10 year old trialler to work on skills that pertain to trials,it just ain't the same as racing in the dirt or street riding at all,but I know that I'll be a much better all around rider as I develop my trials skills.
-
I'm gonna wait until after 12:00 or so to let the Deer Hunters have their time,I maybe alone tomorrow since I think Jimmy Z and those guys were actually riding today(They called me tues night to tell me about their friday ride where they all took off work,I had to take Monday off myself to recover from the drive home on Sunday night,Not a problem for you young guys!) I'll call Bill Super tonight,I know he wants to check the place out,He's still recovering form the injury he got when he invited me down there a month ago.
I'll P.M. you directions to the property.(Easy to Find)
-
Adam,
I believe we'll have to do it ourselves over the winter,I've got access to property, just need the manpower to lay out the sections,I will be out there working tomorrow,I'll give you a call after work tonight.(Gonna call some Trials Inc. guys tonight too)
-
Not to worry, battery power will price itself out of the market much quicker than oil
lithium supply
Zinc-air not much more promising future
-
Guys,Adam won the Intermediate class in only his third trials ever!
Newark,Oh results
Sorry to call you out there Adam, but I thought it was cool!
-
My "New Yuppie Fashion Trend" just arrived from Classictrial,I'll be waiting until later this week to install it,hopefully will get a spin on it next weekend while the memory of the last tuning of the Dellorto is fresh in my mind.(Gave the 60 slide back to Ryan right after the trial)
-
Yep,Ryan Young loaned me a 60 slide to use and with your 98 main she ran much better, just a little burble at tip-in,but much cleaner and more blatt from 1/4 throttle on up,can't wait until the oko gets here.If I were keeping the Dellorto I'd go to a 42 pilot and possible drill out the Idle air bleed(If that applies to Dellortos )
Weather was GREAT! and Newark,Ohio is a wonderful venue,I rode pretty poorly on my first loop but with some turning tips from Jim Zuroske I did much better the remainder of the day,I really need to warm up a bit rather than just riding the loop cold, but I was messing with the carb rather than inspecting the sections in the morning.
-
I'm not sure about the changing bike rule either, has me convinced that I need a backup vintage bike!
I think the idea is trials is such a niche in the US that many have to drive a long way to get to any trials event,If you think your bike may be dodgy you might stay home, better to go and give it a whirl, even if you have to switch bikes to finish the event at least you attended,If it became an issue with guys swapping out the bikes to suit individual sections then I think the rules should call for a five point penalty for each bike swap.
-
classes for everyone,Run Whatcha Brung!
ITSA Rules:
-
I'll have to attend some ITSA events next year!
-
Possibly weak ignition side crankseal drawing in air under high vacuum situation of throttling down. If that's the side that has a bit if main bearing play that makes it hard to seal up.(Seems I to love to blame crankseals for 2-stroke running issues!)
-
Just pulled my carb off and checked the jetting,44 pilot jet 268needle jet,50 slide 80 main jet! this thing is way fat just off Idle,I can make it go lean with the mixture screw but it still blubbers as soon as I crack the throttle open,no wonder she cleans out on top though!
Screw it,ordered OKO from ClassicTrial, hope he ships out quick, gotta trial next weekend, and now that I know it's got that 80 main jet it'll bug the crap outta me even though I've been riding it for months like that.

While refilling the stock Marzocchi shocks on my 240 I put a spring into my press with a bathroom scale and compressed it 4 inches,I was surprised in only showed 200lbs on the scale,I woulda thought with the forward mounted shocks on 240's the spring rate would've been higher(They do have 1.5 inches of preload in the softest position) I figure them to be 50lbs/in springs, which is the rate I see offered for standard vintage style shocks mounted in the standard vintage position.Just interesting to me I guess(my first trials bike, learning as I go!)Awhile back I spoke with Lewisport about the Rockshocks,Adrian didn't have Fantic setup info at the time, told him I'd measure my spring rate when I gotta chance.
BTW,I don't think my shocks were leaking at the shaft, shafts look great,I believe it was from the o-ring on the outside of the sealhead, tightened the eff outa the nuts,we'll see if they'll keep the oil on the inside now(if they make it through one more year end trial event that'd be great)
Also I'm trying to decide if I should buy a backup vintage bike or get a somewhat modern second bike, would practicing on a modern trials bike pick up my skills quicker? I seem to wear down from the heavy clutch and brake action of the Fantic rather than the actual riding of the bike,If I could work on my balance and technique on a modern I think when I got back on the 240 I could adapt quickly. But I also have a line on a KT250,way cheap,I haven't went to see it yet,I intend on riding vintage class at Trials Inc.events next year and a backup vintage bike might prevent me from missing events god forbid my Fantic goes down for any reason(Fantic is likely more reliable than a junk kawasaki, but it'd be nice to have a backup when traveling to events)
-
Hey Adam,
If you wanna try yer bike out bring it over to Bloomington wednesday night around 5:30,we're gonna be working on the trials sections just west of town,I think I've got my Fantic back together and will likely be bringing it along to mess around on once we finish clearing some more brush.(I do have to replace the broken front brake lever yet,I think I've got a temporary replacement until I can get a Domino lever)
I'll give you a call 2morrow and let you know how to get there.
-
I'd say you're gonna have to start locally if you want to compete with a Air Mono, find out where all the Air Monos are hiding by asking around at trials events, both vintage and modern, get the guys who own them to get them up and running, and possibly organize a "evolution day"
-
Not gonna make tippecanoe event, had plans for the upcoming weekend for quite awhile, might make the last event though,we'll see.
Now I'm very hot to get a Modern bike after riding with those guys, but I have to wait a bit since I spent this years moto money on a LC4e Dual Sport.
How far are you from Bloomington? We're building some trials sections and a endurocross course just west of there over this coming winter just west of town and have been going out there on wednesday evenings to work it,but we'll be switching to weekends once we lose the afternoon light.
-
Stick with it there Adam!It can surely be cured!
I always try to do a pressure test of any twostroke that acts funky, best to be reassured about the sealing of the engine before chasing problems on a bike that has ran fine before.
You should carry a test spark plug with you that is gapped out wider than spec (about .100) and just pop that into the end of the plug wire the moment it fails to start to verify it'll jump that extra gap(takes more spark to light a plug inside a engine under compression is the reason for the extra gap)I like to fix a pigtail wire to the plug with an aligator clip on it so that I have a reliable ground connection.
If spark is wonky then clean all ground connections very well before spending moolah on parts!
You might try raising the idle setting just a bit so that you don't need to try to judge the throttle opening but that sounds like a stopgap cure.
Make damn sure your pump gas has no alcohol in it.
I'd check float height too.
I went riding with TI guys Jim Z,Doug Hodgdon,Bill Super, and a couple of other guys down in Bedford today,Bill hurt his leg right off the bat and had to bail, and the rocks were OMG slick so we couldn't try much, but my old Fantic was going along just fine, tried much more stuff than the Vintage lines at the TI events, but then my clutch cable broke, gonna have to carry spares I guess.Pulled the front brake cable apart at Stoney,I ridden motorcycles for forty freakin' years and haven't broke but five or six over that amount of time
