  1. Dayton's in October, isn't it? I don't think I'll be able to make that one due to family commitments, after that weekend I may be fairly able to run away to trials,I have some home projects to do mid october, taking a vacation week to do them but I'm so amped up to ride another event before winter I may just come ride anyway, projects be dammed! I think I maybe able to get by without selling my TJ,I rooted around in the garage tonight and found all the stock parts for the original top and the spreader bars for the windshield,I'll just cut out the front section of my rollcage and put the stock stuff back on(windshield won't fit back on unless I cut my front cage out) then I'll take off the 36 inch tires and put a set of 31's I have back on(have a minimal lift setup) and pull off the tube fenders and put the stock ones back on.I had replumbed the evap system so I wouldn't get a check engine lamp rather than pitch it like all the hillbillies do and I still have the catalytic converter on,Just gotta find where that airbag module went.I'll put the ford TractionLoc limited slip back in the 8.8 and sell the detroit locker.I should be able to get enough for my tires(actually Q78 Swamper TSL's,never seen pavement, full depth tread) plus the detroit, front cage section and tube fenders to pay for getting her back to "mall crawler" ready, then I won't need to look for a winter car(My only driver right now is a 3500 Dodge Ram CTD dually) The jeep will still be a damn good offroad ride,I'll just have to go out on the trails with a different group.plus I can drive her to work again!(liked driving a stinkin' 4 cylinder Jeep so much I sold my 5.0 once I got the Jeep) That'll free up future money for trials expenses like multiple bikes...trips to events...maybe a bit of trials kit plus a nosering....
  2. Well, sorry that I just spoke to you briefly at section six(I think it was six) I meant to look guys you up afterwards but had no idea I'd be so tired, sucks to get old... Glenn,When I come back in from the garage tonight I'm gonna start researching what I can sell the Jeep for...
  3. I'm trying to locate a set of forks for the Fantic right now,her previous life in the southwest left her battlescarred to the point of unrepairable.I thought about just draining the right fork and putting 20 weight in the left side I also have some home projects I'll be starting on that week(Oct 11th,right?) and really can't be running off that weekend. My plan is to fix her up over the winter and riding as many events as I can next year. I'd also like to save up and buy about a $2k "modern" bike to step up my progress(but I think I'd like to compete on my 240) Just bought myself a KTM LC4e dualsport recently which tapped out my splurge money for awhile, actually considering selling my offroad only Jeep TJ that I've only had out three times this year,It goes like hell, climbs things I can't on my trials bike,I might get 33 cents on every dollar invested in return on selling it though...Jeep=(J)ust (E)mpty (E)very (P)ocket!
  4. Hey Jim, Do you have Bill Super's contact info,he's local to us and we need his advice on some trials sections we are laying out near Bloomington over this coming winter(I was your lone Vintage rider at Stoney on saturday)(PM me if you have it)
  5. Jumped It! Young man next to us quietly says"Jumped It!" after Ryan jumps the whole thing,Ryan hears him and repeats"Jumped It!" with a smile on his face Ryan Young(I dunno how to imbed)

    First Trials

Rode my 240 in my first ever trials event last saturday, absolutely loved it! I was the only vintage/twinshock bike, rode the novice gates, would've finished in second in the novices if I'd ridden in their class against modern bikes! Stoney Lonesome Trials Inc. <<--not the beginning of a floater turn
  7. I had never even attended a Trials to even watch! But I am major hooked,I purposely waited until the Stoney event so that I wouldn't have to drive four or five hours just to find out it wasn't for me,If I'd have entered the Novice class I'd have finished second against the modern bikes...
  8. Well,I rode my first trials yesterday and absolutely loved it!!I was the only Vintage class bike so I was even able to take home some Brass! The GasGas guys from Northern Ohio saved my day by giving me a cable end when my front brake cable lost it's soldered on one. Made a few dumb mistakes causing some fivers, but rode the middle sections of the loop fairly clean except when I was yaking with a guy just before starting in and took off in 4th gear, couldn't get downshifted quick enough and dropped it where I shoulda cleaned the section. I totally suck at tight turns, but have a post next to a tree next to my garage to practice at home on. Gonna have to fix up a few things on the Fantic, right fork leg is trashed and the seal won't hold (and carry some spare cables)but all in all the old bike did ok for me. Vintage ran the novice line, there was nothing risky for my beat up old body, but I was stinkin' tired as hell when I got home,I passed on going back today as the guy who was going to come with me bailed due to the rain(I wasn't going to ride, not good enough to handle mud yet) Gonna have to save up and find myself a more modern ride to go along with my Vintage,I think it'll speed up my development(If that's possible for a 50 yr old ) doug (note how my fashion sense is completely opposite of the previous example)
  9. Sold all My Maico stuff earlier this year and bought a KTM 640 LC4 dualsport, great bike that I'm really enjoying.Been messing with this old Fantic 240,looks like hell but everything seems to work ok,might give it a cosmetic workover this winter, but I'm enjoying riding it as it is. I won't be trying anything over at Stoney that'll put my ass at risk, just want to see how it goes. If I was you I'd just put the KT together and ride it as it is...make everything work smoothly, use the recommended fork oil weight, rattle can paint job is doubleplus good idea! I could really use a trials riding buddy, all my friends are Hare Scramblers...If you are free tomorrow night why don't you come on over and check out the property in Stanford,I'm not bringing my bike, just the brushcutter and chainsaw.Need to open the sections instead of riding around on the bike!I'm laying out everything to suit vintage bikes right now but there's plenty of variety there for future challenges.
  10. Do you ride behind Stalker Elementary school? I'm working on building some trials sections at a co-workers of mine's property just west of Bloomington. We'll have a bit of everything when I'm done. Are you going to come over to Stoney Lonesome next weekend?I'll be on the old red Fantic 240,my first Trials event. They've talked me into entering it BTW,protocol requires that you pop intoIntroduce Yourself and post up a quick note about yerself Just ta be friendly like, yaknow
  11. Team Oolitic? As in So.Indiana?
  12. Sam,seeing that your from New Paris,do you remember The Maico dealer that was there around 1980 or so,I used to buy all the shifter T-bars he had for my Maico 125,he took pity on me I guess and sold me a four year old AW440 for $250 bucks...can't remember his name but he was a great guy.(I lived in Warsaw for a few years late seventies to early eighties)
  13. Oh my Fantic 240 rides ok,just kinda rat, plans to fix it up over the winter so it's presentable. I haven't Hare scrambled in 10 years(Farked up my shoulder real good and had to stop high speed riding)and mainly just stuck to street and built myself a Jeep Every time I've had the 240 out it's had a little bugaboo pop up that would screw up you ride at a event,I'll try to get it out this weekend and see if she's passable(Last time out I saw cracks in the intake and air filter boots and had to order them from Bob Wright(got them quick once I gave them a call) Can I just sign up for the AMA on the morning of the event at the site?(Mines expired) Is there a twinshock class? Is it ok If I 5 every section? I'm also hot to buy myself a Air Mono but need to save up a little 'cause I just bought myself a KTM LC4e Dually
  14. I've raced alot of Hare Scrambles at Stoney,I'll be coming to the trials to spectate, never been to a Trials event before,I do need to watch one before entering! (And get around to finishing up my Fantic!)I need to see how sections are laid out,I've got a co-worker who has 80 acres and he wants to set up some trials sections on his property,We're likely to run a Hare Scramble at his place next year,I'd like to convince him to do a trials too,His property is about 50 miles west Of Stoney. I'm also a volunteer at RedbirdSra and can lay out trials sections there too(about 75 miles wset Of SL)
  15. Dammit, there's a Kroo 40 miles from my house on ebay, starting at $700,but I don't need any more trouble in my life...

    Fantic 240

Air leak causing a severe detonation(Pinging,Pinking) Can sound like a metal to metal knock when really bad, think big Diesel truck type noise.Best to do a pressure test. The Idle issues are a clue.If it passes a pressure test it's possible the ignition has gone wonky and timing is advancing.be careful 'cause it can go into runaway,I had a 440 Maico do that to me while it was loaded into the back of my pickup truck, yanked the plug wire, still screaming away, jammed it into gear, just started doing a burnout in the truck bed, didn't get it shutdown until I had shifted up into high gear and stood on the rear brake pedal...
  17. You could run both the shifter and brake on the right, lots of Bultaco in the U.S. are like that, they're just ridin' 'round in circles though...
  18. Glad I could be off assistance there Glen Could you not just stick a 428 chain right onto the narrow sprockets? That's what we used to do to get mud to evacuate back before "Sidewinder" style sprockets(Ok,it was just because we'd steal Dad's spare chain fer his big bike when ours jumped the sprockets and mangled up) I've also turned sprocket thickness down on a brake lathe(had a bunch of 530 sprockets, needed 520) Would it help the 4 ply tires to "sipe" the tread?(not for when your daughter rides it,for when you sneak a ride)
  19. Black wheels= Think I'll do gold rims when I do the cosmetic on mine.

    Fantic Trivia ?

Next you'll be buyin' up the Broncco minibikes Or a Fantic Chopper
  21. So is it--- Air cooled Fantic=good Liquid cooled Fantic=bad?
  22. Personally I think the color scheme on these Old Air Monos is too flamboyant to go stealing parts from them,I say keep it as it is and ride it!(you would have to get the appropriate day-glo kit to wear while riding it though )
  23. OK,found the bike crank puller, but the damn thing is m22 and m23,I can't remember what I used it on but I doubt it was a morini 50.I did find another old puller my dad had that measures just under 19mm,it's threads are worn to the point I might be concerned screwing it into a rare flywheel. There is a chance it would fit yours as it's the only flywheel puller my dad had and I do remember having the flywheels off of our Broncco's. I tried swapping the ignition off our minarelli 50 powered mini onto our morini 75 powered mini to put a lighting coil on the 75 but the flywheel tapers were different, and the inside diameters of the rotors were also not the same,so i'd be carefull with the one you got,it's likely the only freakin' one in the U.S. If you have no other recourse I can send it to you,if you cut off the first few threads it might be a better fit,you wouldn't need to return it to me,I don't really see a fiddy in my future...
  24. I have a bicycle crank removal tool that I've used to remove a flywheel on something ages ago,it has two different threads,m22x1 and I think m20x1,whatever it is it has fit an ignition on something I worked on in the past,I haven't messed with my bicycles for a year or so so I don't quite know which toolbox to look in(If it's in any toolbox) All the modern crank tools I see on parktools website just have the more common m22 thread,I bought mine at a bike shop 15 years ago,I don't know if the dual threaded removal tools are still available.I'll be out in the garage working tomorrow night,I'll track it down and see what the threads are, there's no problem sending it to you to use if you need it(providing I can find it!)
