nsaqam,
Yes it is good to seek knowledge. But be aware just because it is in print does not make it truth.
Ishy,

R2W,
I could not believe you did have faith in Bou?
I got two out of three. Sticking with Bou, he's on a roll.

Andy,
I have a suggestion.
Since about 80% of the posted topics on "Across the Pond" turns into Lane making some unrelated remark against the NATC, why don't you give him his own category. That way it will not clutter up the Across the Pond forum. AND
In that way people who wanted to read this type of stuff could easily find it.
Any suggestion for a title?

It is a tough one, but it can be done.
Go to your local hardware store, buy a pocket full of hacksaw blades.
Puttin it back is where the problem will come in to play.
BTW - not recommended to ride test bike with tank removed.
-
Lane your right we do order special made bikes for the US.
You know the ones with training wheels, and streamers on the handle bars.
Looks better when we are riding our sections on the sidewalks.
We don't actually want to get them soiled. Remember Purple on the right and Green on the left.

Thomas,
Thanks for the added information (education) about how sound frequency travels.
I am certainly not an expert, except I know its louder than 2-strokes.
Measurements for MC events are taken near the exhaust. Is there a standard or method for frequency and distance traveled that can be applied?
So if I read this right the only way to solve the problem would be develop better silencers to damp out this lower freq. or tune this freq. out of the 4st motor to begin with. The Sherco 3.2 seems much quieter. Is it the motor or the silencers? Paxau where are you?
At last years land use planning meetings our local MX track has come under added pressure from complaints from neighbors. Long time neigbors have been interviewed since the introduction of the 4 stroke MX bikes. One neighbors comment said it use to sound like bee's buzzing, now we can hear more of a roar and it's louder.
We also use this park for trials events and is one of my closest and favorite place to ride. That is the reason for my concern.

Luddle,
Not sure what you are refering to about restrictor between ECU and inlet.
I just changed to a programable ECU and swapped it out last week, no restrictor. Got mine straight from crate also.
Unless the U.S. Models with no lights, not street approved, does not have this restrictor.
Three restrictors in the U.S. import version 4rt: 1) between head pipe and head; 2)between header pipe and muffler; 3)one on the end of muffler (silencer)
Volcano: Have you checked the fuel? With that long of shipping time perhaps some water condensation in the aluminum tank? I have heard this happen on other brands.

2nd paragraph = Former long time WTC Beta rider Kenichi(Kenny) Kuroyama will be riding the SY250F in Japanese Nationals next year. I think it says no World Cup Competition for him.

Hillary:
I will be the first to second that!
I was just going over my 4rt this past weekend.
Let's see I changed the oil, cleaned the air filter, replaced a slightly bent bar that I have been too lazy to change for about 4 months. Cleaned it up. Thats all.
I too experienced major problems with other brands in the past. But not with my 98,02,05 Montesa's. History should knock me in the head and learn my lesson.
That's reason enough to buy another one. But wait I don't feel the need, cause this one running great. I'll wait till 07. Hopefully they will put that wet/dry switch on the handlebar like Fuji runs. HINT HINT.
Although I really don't need it.
Purchased last Dec. ridden almost everyweek end (85% anyway) Years tally: one set of bars, replaced two front fenders, two skid plate screws, couple sets of grips, 2 rear, 1 frt tires, one spark plug. Parts guys are not getting rich on Montesa parts.
no levers, no brake pedals, no shifter, no jets,no splitting cases, etc.
As I watch my buddies fiddle around with jetting on their old fashion carbs, I smile when my 4rt starts first kick every time.

From Mich Lin:
OK this thread is starting look like a Seinfeld episode.
Is Lane referring to himself in the 3rd person now?
Mich Lin is Lane, right?
This is such a soap box, oops I mean soap opera.
Keep it coming, good entertainment. :santawink:

After listening to Dougies and Fuji's video clip and their response to no-stop for the WCT I wondered who would really gain an advantage with the no-stop rule? A four-stroke rider or a two-stroke rider.
I know the reasoning would be to ease up on the sections, but how much?
If a rider can't stop forward motion who really has the advantage on a world champ type large step?
Is no-stop really in the cards for 06?
-
He does know that is a decal, that has silver specks printed on it to make it look like carbon fiber cloth.
Did I say that out loud?.........
I used the very same on my old 02 scorpa cut outs in the tank.
Now a real carbon frame, or at least tubes, that is the next step. Just like Lance's bikes.

It seems too many people are hung up about weight of the bike.
Having switched from the lightest to a 4rt, it seems one can't focus on any one specification to judge the bike. To me it is more how the bike works as a combined package.
Heck I haven't even removed my side stand on the 4rt, just don't care about lightening it for a club rider like myself.
I might be mistaken but it seems in WCT rounds where the 4rt's have done well are in the wet, slippy, trials vs. the more dry indoor style events.
Living in the northwest U.S. it's wet 9 months a year, the 4 strokes work here for sure.
-
Buster,
I own a 4rt. I have also started the Scorpa 125, and the Sherco 4s.
Without exception they all "Kicked over" easier than my previous 2 strokes.
Starting a 4 stroke seems more like a pushing motion vs. a fast kick that the 2 stroke needs. In fact that method was recomended by my dealer.
Next time your out riding, just casually suggest she try to kick one over.
I would think it would really be a ego boost to have a bike she can start, over the loyalty thing.

trialsman:
The guy in the middle is Dennis Sweeten. He was riding our US series champ class up until about three years ago. He is still one of our best riders in the Northwest. I think this is his third, maybe forth, SSDT.

Martin,
Thanks for the info.
Just think, that picture could have been sitting on that work bench for over 20 years. Kind of amazing , as much as we change and move things around in my place of work.
Looking at that shot of the Honda Trials engine, we have gone full circle but you can really see how much the 4rt engine has developed.
Kind of looks like trial specific boots. Before or after the dunlop welly? Don't remember the brand.

Last week I was walking by this old work bench that had been sent to our factory from another location.
I noticed this picture was under the plexi-glass covering the work bench.
It looks like it is from a magazine. There is "Trail Bike 83" printed on the lower right had corner. Not sure if it is page 83 or year 83.
Have any clues who the rider is?

Congrats! Dougie and Montesa!
Yeah that 4rt will just not be competitive in WR competition. Yeah right!
-
I broke two kick start levers, the pivot bolt would back out. I would forget to check/tighten and it would allow the aluminum tabs to flex - fatique the tabs - snap. On the third one I put medium strength lock-tight on the pivot bolt, never backs out - no problems after eight months riding. - not a design problem, just a maintenance/set-up issue.
-
After a high scoring first loop of 24 points, Fuji's had the lowest score of 2 points on the second loop. Going to be a good championship series.
-
Steve,
Your right without any restrictors they border on obnoxious. When the guys first got their 4rt's in Oregon, they took them all out.
They then put them back in. It was much better.
I am not sure why any club rider would want to run with them all removed.
At our last local trial, Dennis Sweeten ran his 4rt with I believe all but the center one installed. He even had a Mint spark arrester on. He rode many of the same past National Champ lines with no problem at all.
It's funny we don't really set sections up for Dennis, he is in a league of his own at are club level, so we let him pick his lines. He chooses lines harder than I would have set up for him.

Saturday, we had three 4rt's & two 2-strokes out at our ORV area.
Two 4rt's with all restrictors in and one with only the center restrictor out (mine). We are also required to have spark arresters. We had stainless steel screens molded over the end restrictor and held with an hose clamp. Pretty sano at least until an after market is available.
Anyway the 4rt's sounded like Stock XR's out on the trail. Not bad at all in this heavy forested area.
This was my only concern about my new bike. The first few 4rt's that came in had the head pipe and center restrictors pulled out by the owners. They were noticably louder than just pulling the center restrictor or running all in. The guys actually put the head pipe restrictor back in for sound and also smoothed the power out.
I pulled the center one out to give the motor a little more snap. Might be our imagination but the screens also seemed to quiet the exhaust note more than the non-screen.

I don't know what it is about photo's, but they sure make sections less severe looking that what they seem to be in person. I rode this trial and that step made me chicken out 3 out of four loops. The same thing happens on World Round Videos, when you actually witnessed the sections in person. Maybe we need 3d photo's to get the pucker factor view.
If there any professional photographers who would like to share some tips to help get more realism for the actions shots, it would be appreciated. (sorry of the original thread topic)

Ishy- Remember my helmet graphic? Thought that is a good handle.
No I never was on the wrong side..up on that section. That was our other buddy. I gave it a go the 1st loop made it ok, then proceed to ride over the ribbon on a turn. 2nd loop as I was approching I started to plan my bail out and decided to do a last minute chicken out. 3rd and 4th also.
If you did not see our bud crash, picture the World Round Dougie Crash minus the ten foot fall back to the ground. Maybe a three foot fall. I think he hit a little out cropping with his front wheel (too low) and stuck it. Scared me out of riding it.
