see what kind of abuse I have to put up with from my Boss!!! Wheres my TUC card
-
Well IMHO, the future of the sport lay in whether it can attract the youth in sufficient numbers.... That bike Video of Matt shows what these guys can do.. pulling a wheelie for the length of my back lane was the best feat I could achieve at that age..
I believe that if we make the sport something that they want to do, then it has a bright future
If you try and think about the difference between the youth and the oldies, then I reckon its this.
If you get through a section with a clean then your happy. A good youth likes to get through on a clean........ but with style its more rewarding.
Thats the difference I think.
-
Popped in on Big Johns mention to http://www.trials-forum.co.uk and watched the video of Matt Burrows
Heres the video compressed to 10meg from 42.5 - Matt Burrows
Well impressed with that ! Is this kind of stuff typical from these guys?
-
Isnt the youth thats coming through making the transition from cycle trials to motorbike trials? you dont see them doing much hopping do ya
by the way, take a look at this video from Matt Burrows
I compressed the file to 10meg from 42.5 so the quality isnt as good as the original..
-
we got a new logo coming soon
-
With regard to stopping, I think the skill these guys possess with their ability to balance and manoeuvre the bike into all sorts of positions is part of modern trials and is what sets them so far in front of the rest. I heard on more than one occasion some youth experts complaining of being penalised in sections for hopping the bike and dropping points for not moving forward.. Its a shame, because its a skill you need to ride at that level and I for one am all for it.
As called for by Dougie and others, adopt FIM rules in the UK and lets keep this skill in the sport.
IMHO
-
What you talking about !!! Thats not skill !! I do that every night in my dreams

Howard, Rode a full trial yesterday for the first time with this set up and after overcoming a problem with a kinked fuel feeder pipe it ran quite well however it was hard to start a few times when hot. I also come off in spectacular fashion with a beautiful over-the-top dive into a muddy stream flat on me face She didnt want to start for a while after that so the problem isnt cracked as yet. ( although I saw on more than 1 occasion Gas Gas machines having big problems starting when dropped ! )
To ride, the bike is much better, Theres no jerky pickup at the low end like with the standard setup on the dellorto and the power delivery is smooth and very powerful.
There was a section yesterday that had a two stage rock step up a small stream.I tried it in second gear for the first 3 times but couldnt manage to get through it without a dab, on the fourth attempt I tried it in 3rd gear and from a standing start dropped the clutch and hit the first and flew completely over the second step. The surge of power took me back a bit and stalled it Great buzz though
on another note, I havent checked the valve clearances to the spec above as yet so will do that before I make any more changes. ( although I will get the JJJ needle as you suggest )

I have been messing for a while now with a variety of combinations of jets/needles settings and air screw settings for the KeHin PWK28 and this is the best combo i have come up with.
Pilot: 40
Main jet: 108
Needle: JJH in the second from top clip.
Air screw: fully in then 3/4 turn out.
Idle: 1200rpm
Compared to the factory settings of the Dellorto, the result is that the lower end is very smooth and stays that way right through to the top end. It has made a considerable improvement I feel.
I had a 125 main jet in and this was way too rich. Went down to the 100 and then a bit further to 108 and this seems spot on. Fan is back to cycling correctly also.
I will try a few different plug combinations now to see what effect that has now..
-
Chris, I am inundated with stuff to do at the moment plus im in the middle of building Ross Danby's website . I havent finished completely your spreadsheet as its quite complex . its about 85% done.
I'll drop you a mail asap as soon as its ready.. probally be another week i reckon.
-
No, i didnt - But looking at your post, i also bought today a 124 main jet for the Dellorto, will set the needle on the top setting and try it again. Also, I will put a small pipe on that overflow and use an air bulk fitting and take it out the side of the airbox. stop it ever flooding the box again
then it should be sweet.
Comparing the 2 carbs, I like the softness of the Keihin but had starting problems with it when hot. Didnt have this problem when I had the Dellorto on.
What plug/gap settings do you recommend?
-
The most positive thing i can say about this bike, is while I have had a few problems (all catalogued in these forums ) I have aboslutely no intention of changing it back to the 2 stroke. I love it to bits.
The things I have done to it is:
Just changed to a Keihin Carb (40 Pilot/125 Main/JJH second to top setting, air screw 1 full turn) and the big difference is much softer at the lower end. I do like this change for tight and twisty sections. The top end still is as powerful,
although, the bike is running hotter so will look to experiment a bit further. May try a Mikuni carb or some others
Mechanically, nothing has gone wrong and the bike is solid.
Power delivery is smooth as ice cream and the overall feeling is like you can tackle anything as you've got this awesome power at your fingertips.
Starting has been a problem and this has been due solely to the carb and the overflow pouring straight into the airbox when tipped up. If i had known about this problem when i got it, I would have done a simple mod to stop it and wouldnt have had 90% of the problems I have.
When I go to trials, I still get people coming up to it and looking. Anyone who has a go are very impressed by its grunt.
I only got back into trials this year and ride novice route but the first trial I rode I scored 128 . Since I got the 4T I have dramatically improved to the point where last week I beat both the top novice riders in my club ( im still crap tho )
A local expert rides a 4T and loves it but would love to see one of the very top riders riding one to get their views.
I have had a go on the gassers/scorpa/beta/4RT/ etc and overall, the 4T is by far my favourite bike. The only bike currently that would make me think of changing is the Scorpa 4t if its any good when it comes out.
-
Howard,
The fan was on all the time and doesnt go off. The ambient temperature was around 22 degrees so it wasn't that hot. I wouldnt have mentioned it but it is in stark contrast to what I had before.
Have you any experience with the Mikuni carbs - this TMS38 carb although maybe need some work to get it to fit has a nifty Pro-Option which sounds good ! its at the bottom of this page http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/mikuni/TMX35_settings.htm
-
Just come back from my first trial with the KeiHin on and have found the bike is running MUCH hotter than with the dellorto. Dont know if its coz im running richer jetting or not.? The fan is on constantly and doesnt cycle at all.
Its been a bitch to start a few times and I never had this hot start problem with the Dellorto
Probally try the Dellorto again but change the jetting and mod it so I dont get that overflow problem into the airbox again.
-
Well initially it was running sweet when I took it up and down my drive. But, when i took it out for a blast, it wouldn't rev to full throttle and was missing a bit. I spoke to Allen Performance and they suggested I go to a 125 Jet which I will try today (Friday)
Howard, what is the air screw setting you used by the way.! I have it fully in then anti clockwise 1 full turn. If I release it any more, it farts and pops away. If I take it to nearly half a turn I get a very responsive increase/decrease in throttle control better than the dellorto was on its factory supplied setting. Is this in too much?
I currently have the needle on one setting down from the top clip!
Are you expecting it to use more fuel ? I would have thought so if Im increasing the main jet size. What do you think?
Also, having taken the Dellorto off and taken a look at it, There is a small pipe, bottom centre on the inside of the rear air inlet port.
If you hold the carb level and keep rotating it until its at an angle of around 60 degrees , fuel pours out of it like a tap. If I block this off then fuel just comes up out the main jet and floods back albeit much slower. Why design it so it does that!!! Why not put in small solenoid valve which shuts off when the motor stops.
90% of my problems I have had with this bike is due to this.
UPDATE fitted the new #125 jet and seems to be ok now although the bike is running a bit hot as the fan isnt cycling on/off anywhere near as much as it was.
-
I just started riding this year again after a long break so I was never good enough to handle the 290 as a first bike. But like bikespace has said above, I have had to learn to control the clutch to the best of my ability to be able to ride it at all and it has helped a lot. I still got a long way to go though
-
Just a small observation but at 57Kgs, you should seriously consider the 200 coz I found my 290 a bit zippy ( done all the same stuff as you except slow throttle) and im 80Kgs. The bike probally dont know your even on it!
With regards to the mods, you have already done everything to soften it that I am aware of except fit the KeiHin.
-
Just fitted the KeiHin and been riding the bike up and down my drive for a bit and so far it looks real sweet. Easy to start even if i stall it ( purposely you understand ) Just up ended it against the garage wall and it didnt stop. didnt flood, didnt mess up at all !!!
Ill see what its like after a week or two!
Oh and by the way, ordered it 3.20pm yesterday from Allen Performance. They set it up and shipped it and got it at 9.10am this morning
Good service that !
-
I was lucky enough to be up there when Gaz was marking out some of the sections and they just look superb!. For those of you who dont know, this is the same venue that hosted the Llanfyllin Forest Trophy Trial earlier this year which had a HUGE entry and was by far the largest attended trial in our centre for the whole season.
You can also expect a very well organised event as these guys were spot on with the Forest Trophy Trial considering the size of the entry.
Cant Wait
-
Thanks for some top advice guys
I have just ordered a KeiHin carb from Allens Performance with the 40/110 combo but they didnt have a JJJ needle in stock but had the standard fit JJH which is 1 step richer so I went for that. If its a problem Ill change it later
Thanks again
-
Sounds good - Try lifting the bike to near vertical (up a steep bank or something)and see if the bike cuts out - if it does, then try starting it again on the flat and tell me what happens - if it starts then im buying one also, if you could let me know what Jets Howard put in it that would be a great help
I did however notice that one of the minders at hawkstone was running a Kehin carb on his 4T and still had a problem starting it.. so I need to be sure about this one before I fork out some dosh.
Many thanks
-
Mine has always been ok to start when stopped using with the Kill switch.
This is the ONLY problem the bike has left that needs sorting,
once this is done, its as good as it gets and thats awesome
In my biased opinion of course
Oh and by the way, wouldnt get this problem with fuel injection !!!
-
Seem to have the starting thing sussed now except..... If the bike is up ended in a section so the bike is near vertical, the engine will cut out and the fuel floods out into the airbox. After which the bike is a bitch to start! same thing happens if I lay it down.
Looking at the float arrangement, its easy to see why it does this as it has 2 floats both sliding on 2 pins which will be fine when upright. When at an angle of 90degrees, the floats will be forced up putting side load onto the pins and stop then from sliding.
Is the Kehin carb like this? Are there any other carbs I could fit that dont have this problem. Mating the different carb up wont be a problem for me as I can design and make new adaptor/s

Update:
Kirsty (South Shropshire MCC )has kindly been testing the 10 section version for her last 2 trials and overall it has performed well however, a few things have popped up during its use mainly due to the strict configuration of the worksheets. i.e. you cant cut and paste stuff and add/delete columns and rows without upsetting its configuration. So I have been working on putting controls to either stop or warn the user if they are likely to do something that they shouldnt.
The other problem comes from the use of Macros. At the moment, to get the buttons up on the control bar at the top to run the macros means I have to do it myself ( or the user can do it if they have a very good understanding of excel) so I am working on producing a set-up macro that you run just the once when you first use the program and it does it for you.
I am also working on a complex 40 column scoring system for the SHEFFIELD & HALLAMSHIRE MOTOR CLUB. This version uses just three classes hard/clubman/easy and they type in all scores from the 40 sections. Does anyone else do this?
When they are fully tested, I will release copies on here under a shareware license and see how it goes.

know what you mean, Took my missus to the trial, first one shes ever been to and man she didnt stop going on about those butts in lycras
She reckons Taddy was wearing a 'G String' and I told her, "You aint getting me in a pair of those..... except yours that is my dear"
