  1. Wow excellent response !Laughed at most of the replies so far . Lets make no mistake, there have been some land mark bikes ,and they deserve the status they have . As for Bantam's , i had a D14-4 when i was 13 . It put 35 stitches in my leg .The vibration gave double vision and white finger . That bike was mint . You can sort them as much as you like ,Wouldn't entertain one . Stuck with a limp for many years and now a right foot that needs putting on the tracking gauges . Suzuki GT 380 , pile of old tosh . The Kawasaki's mmm ,the 750 triple ,yep would say land mark bike,Z 900 yep also S1 250 nice .RC 30 ,vincent HRD ,, Norton Commando roadster 750, and any number of good bike's of the past . The scary thing is ,the people who are doing bikes up ,LC's for instants ,who's going to keep them in circulation, because most young one,s don't give a crap about them . And there's a landmark bike if ever there was one . When my brother saw my 350 when i was 18 ,his remark was"" if you'd had that bike 10 years ago you could have mopped up at any race meeting". The thing is ,between the cops , ministry of transport ,and government (various other action groups anti bike ) What have the concessions given to motor cyclists done ? Fat rock all .That's the 250s off the road ,restriction on 125s ,so where will all these over priced "classics" go ? By the way , why are people proud of a bike's lack of use ? And how much is the vintage classic air for this P.O.S i've got in this classic cardboard box i have ? Austin Allegro , they got a tablet for that . Ted .
  2. Don't know how some of you feel on this subject but here goes . Sorry but this subject has been in the back of my mind for ages . I am completely amazed by some of the bikes (road and off road ) that are being touted as " classic" . Bikes what were crap then and are still crap now going for silly money .Not saying that they've not had good ( not em all that's for sure ) jobs done on them ,but for god's sake . I saw an add for a Honda 750 saber .Grotesque looking ,crap quality , i,ll handling junk . Assuring selling point "Great drive" "collectable classic " . If that bike is a classic , i'll platt ***** ! It's old , that's for sure ,was out the same time as Freddie Spencer , When rubbish metal plug cap's sold with most jap bikes then , are being bought for daft prices now on bidding web sites , in the name of being standard , i wonder whats going on in peoples heads ! Show the said item a picture of a rain cloud and you get a dead short . That's why everybody who had them on their bikes got shut of them a.s.a.p and fitted proper N.G.K ones that actually worked in all weathers . Any one got a view on this ? Not restricted to trials bikes either . Shyted.
  3. Guys ,is thar the sweet smelling stuff you buy at the pumps which is for sale in most European countries comes in two grades ? This was making an appearence in France 18 months ago .
  4. May stand corrected here . Running an out board at 100;1 has more to do with whats being pushed into the water through the exhaust .As part of my duties ,i pilot an M.O.B rescue craft, both the Danish and Norwiegen marine authority insist on low hydrocarbon emsision oils for that type of 2 stroke craft and as you state the motor pumps the cold (always )water around the motor . I would say that if you run an engine at 60:1 the oil can do it's job , lubricate and aid cooling the bearings, provide better piston ring seal thus aiding combustion . 100:1 may work but personally i think thats very low amount . The less of it ,the least effectively it does it's job . Also a dyno tests air fuel ratio at given rpm as well as B.H.P at given throttle openings and full throttle . Bit different than a small marine engine This is brill ,all this information on just this one subject . Fuel ratio ! Be safe .
  5. Hello linkpin . Very true what your saying also . My opinion is that double the entry card ,generate cash . Secure the private land by cash and so it goes . Who's going to marshal ? My self i will give my time to mashal and i have done in the past at several event's from Stacksteads quarry to the post in between the bottom of Brey Hill and Ago's leap at the I.O.M with my mentor the late Eddie Crooks ,for several years . The Moto Cross lads go by (or used to ) who had helped to build the track and marshal .Those who hadn't were expected to do so in their turn, and it was brought up at club nights if they didn't .You can't press people but if you put a pre requisit on it then folk know where they stand . I do agree with what you say ,things can turn into Frankenstiens monster very quick . If managed propper it can be good .Don't forget though ,the young need an example to follow and if the rules are simple ,every one mucks in ,then they have a future ride ,and we have a ride now . Still don't like traffic cop's though ! Be safe ,Shy.
  6. Cop's and bikes ,mmm got one thing to say about that ,years of persicution as a legal road rider on the road with a legal bike obaying the speed limits . Cops show up all nicey nicey at Caton long layby ,a regular bike meet on Sundays. They then start to measure (with a tape) number plates they think are dodgey and start laying the IT'S NOT REGULATION DIMENTIONS rule down .I'm stopping there as i have no time for the bike mounted traffic cops ,say what you will on the positve of this but sorry i feel there motives are not that of ,dare i say it ,friendship towards motor cyclists .The law suit's where they want it to fit .
  7. Bang on , and though i dislike to say this as far as moto cross bikes go ,they do off road riding no good as far as private land for your own use is concearned .Before any one with MX bikes starts off , i am not anti mx bike or against mx as a sport ,i like it . An example ,any one know Roy from RAS sport ,well heres a tail i got from him .For 20 or more years he's used a quarry to ride in with no trouble from the cops or anyone else . Moto cross bikes appear on the quarry and next thing every one is stopped from going there . Unfortunatly as well as being faced with other problems noise from bikes is another . Couldn,t unfortunatly agree more with Basil bs view .
  8. Well it's amaizing what you find out . The problem has gone by doing the friction plate mod .But it pays to be observant ! The interior of the friction plates was bult up by a millimeter or so and also the bike had an incorrect steel plate in there .wont explain but will post the pics when i get back to the UK .It works now .
  9. Neat mods , but tell you what i didn't get , ......... paid for the last ten days at work ,stuck in the North North Sea of Norway all over Christmas and new year .It's freezing ,windy and has been snowing like mad , BUT BUT BUT , thought i saw father christmas ,or was i holusinating because i've been on night and changed to days . Happy new year every one !
  10. Forgot to say ,your enfield looks brill . Ted
  11. Not necassariely up jetting Jeff ,you may have to just raise the needle hight ,or even drop a jet size and raise the needle deppends on several things . Best thing to do is perform a plug chop . Your engine is in good condition i take it ?If you research the web or maybe speak to the likes of Kev from Gas Gas uk they may advise you directly .By rule of thumb ,if you jet up you are allowing more fuel mix through but you may rob your engine of tractabillity or throttle response . If you raise the needle you are letting more fuel through for a given throttle position. Let us know what you find , i like this kind of stuff . Ted .
  12. Excellent point ironbelly ,so easily over looked . Ted.
  13. Hello Jeff . If your pushing the revs yes . You may have to alter the settings on the carb too ,It's not just about pre mix ratio ,you have an air ellement in the fuel mix also don't forget.A propper enduro has a racing engine , tuning conditions deal with thermal dynamics differently . Don't go at it and do nothing or you could end up with a silencer fire or siezure . Ted.
  14. Hi there i'm shyted . Have you tried a ride on a Fantic 240 twin shock ? I've compeeted on one and compaired to the Spanish bikes of the time they're very good . Engine design has modern tech ideas (plated bore being one of them ) You can do loads to them and they fetch a good price if they're sorted.Thats the plus . The minus is ,to buy now they command more, and with all bikes like this being draged out of sheds the uk over, the"it's an appreciating classic" gang are only to ready to stiff you . I have a couple of 245 Monos (not for sale) and have no qualms in tackling anything whilst riding . Go to www.classictrials.co.uk web site and have a look just for the sake of it , see what you think . You could be buying £700 worth of heart ache that ends up being repaired more than ridden, maybe not . I loved my 240 , it was a great little bike and was mint when i sold it .Dead reliable and pretty robust . I'd look at the Fantic .Depends what you like suppose . Good luck , Ted.
  15. As with others here ,have read this with interest and the majority is relavent .Several things here .If your into bikes in the uk ,your under the carpet ,unpublisized ,unwanted and hassled from most angles .Unless there's a back hander in there for prominant profile person(out side of motor cycling) forget it .Land is on the whole unavailable because of people who are uncompromising on both sides . If you had horses ,you'd have a shot because horses attract money ,that equals revenue ,(and vehicles that cause more damage than a hundred trials bikes, but that does't matter). Some out there object to paying £10 to £15 for a property to ride like Back Cowm for a day. You can have all the R and D you like PROVIDING SOMEONE WANTS TO PAY FOR IT! THATS YOU BUYING THE BIKE AND AS YOU STATE BIKES ARE ALREADY EXPENSIVE . You any idea how much it cost Honda to develop and abandon fuel injection on Mick Doohans 500 GP bike at the time when bikes enjoyed a ready sale.Casey Stoners gear box £257000 .That cost had to be recovered .Judjing by the bikes i've bought second hand this year ,alot of you wont even buy a new lockwasher for repairs you've carried out and finish a job correctly . Sorry to put it like that but it's true and some of you ,like me , will have had the brunt of peoples ommissions ! Disposable income dissappearing fast. As for trials push bikes excellent , place to ride ,free ! land set asside ,NOT NECASSARY, hassle from cops ,no problem , tv profile excellent ,doesn't exclude any one,and it's "urban" and it's green ! Sorry was nearly sick then ! Yep the kids don't need any parental input ,dad can go the pub mum can view Jeremy kyle . If you want to attract the young get rid of the old , but you can't here ,because the young ain't got any cash ! We are the minority here and circumstances now make it hard to attract the young.I'm paying through the nose for my son to have a good ,safe reliable bike and to be honest he's a crap rider , he wont be worrying Mr Dabster lets put it like that ,BUT HE'S GOING TO BE THERE and he's 19 and if we can bring in one each thats where i feel we need to start, that one act would double the entry card .Accomodate them .That my friends is a task in it's self . Be Safe . .Just out of curiosity as anyone ran outdoor cycle /motor cycle trials events ?
  16. Agree with all here .Just to highlight something (if you ain't bought already ). On Saturday the 15th of Dec , my son and me went to Back Cowm quarry .After riding both up a boulder strewn hill .Firstly i've got a fantic 245 (1990 bike) and i bought Jack a very decent 280 gas gas Andorra (2000 model) Secondly ,the Fantic is pretty sorted and WAS a well capable bike when they came out .Cost me
  17. Wow ! Saw a rock that big once though , but not here .
  18. Bought this 245 in June and only started to ride it recently due to ongoing repairs and my job . Well after the bike got nice and hot on the first outing ,the clutch started to slip like hell . So bought a set of friction plates from Bob Wright at the Stafford show as i reckon the ones in it were probably original ,if not from when the bike was new . No matter what , i knew that would be the least thing wrong . Ha ha ,how i hate being right ! The oil should have been clear ,as the whole thing's been rebuilt by the past owner , but it was black . Receipts for all the work ,and spare bits . I don't even bother asking people about bikes now when i buy second hand because so many people just come out with utter ( am i aloud to say ***** ) ***** , it's not worth listening to ! On removing the case i found a broken finger on the clutch basket . Then on stripping the clutch pressure plate i found that the clutch steels and frictions in the wrong order ,having a steel running directly onto the driven plate assembly ,which is aluminum ,hence the black oil . Mmmmmm ! So ,cleaned out the box and bearings , rinsed it out with fresh oil and let it drain overnight .Built it up , took the bike out ,yep no slip . But could not adjust the clutch to that correct fine setting . Clutch dragging , could not push the bike proper in gear when hot or cold . Then i read the Beta clutch blog by Dan Williams from the states . Well stuff me,every surface was covered in of all things ,friction material ! You would have thought the things were made of composite material . Saw the stuff of course but never gave it a second thought . Will put on the before and after pics soon . Lets put it this way ,taking the excess material off , was well ,therapeutic! Oh yes , i've got a spare basket and steels and will let you know the outcome , if your interested . Shyted .
  19. Hello Mark54 ,I've got heaps of bits ,will have a look through to see if i've got a cable ( good or bad ) if you still need one drop me a line . You should be able to get one from Bob or Steve ,but if not talk to Venhill engineering and they will sort you out . I have a silencer , and a chain tensioner ,you can have them just pay the postage , if your interested mail me . See from your picture the discs are corroded .If they're bad and you need to replace them ,get ready to nail your hat on . A shocking £100 with postage for the rear and £80 inc postage for the front .Think somones been taking LSD in Italy ,priced up today , even Bob Wright expressed shock horror ,but at least you can still get them . I really like my 245 ( the 212 cc version of your bike ) i have a 205 in bits as well . As with alot of trials mono's the lower link assembly bearings and bushes will be stuffed . Apart from the dog bone links , the parts aren't to pricey and relativly easy to repair . If you get it sorted you wont be dissapointed with what it can do for a 156 cc bike . Dave .
  20. There are'nt any stupid questions ,especially if you don't know the answer ! Have you found any info about your bike .Maybe Jim Schnell does something on the internet (youtube ) if you get stuck .Also Kev from Gas Gas uk can and will help if you send him a mail .If you haven't found any thing about the age of your bike or any other aspect give Gas Gas UK a ring give them the frame Number and they will tell you everything about your model . Good luck pal . Shyted.
  21. Hello Matt . Yep agree about your choice of bikes and what people have said . Here we've got a mint 2000 gas gas 280 and my air cooled 245 Fantic . The Gas gas is a damed good bike . The ideas on it are great when you compare it to the Fantic ,and i dare say the Beta is the same . Parts are reasonable and on the whole, on hand .Gas Gas U.K have a brill back up service ( thats only my opinion ) and Kev the Mechanic can help if you get any probs , by E-Mail . We're off to Hawks nest next week near Buxton to practice for the first time . I think you just pay at the farm and thats you all day. thats within reach of you quite easily . Think theres pleanty of choice out there but still go through the bike . This year ive bought four bikes and all have needed the lower arm link bushes replacing and they aren't cheap even from a bearing suplier . Theyre suposed to get service every 40 houres ish ,but some bikes have had that little use , the pins have corroded even at three years old like my mates rather brill 250 pro which he got for a song out of the local paper. You can update your bike as well without busting the bank , just check out trialsandendurodirct.com and offroadmoto ,who have some rather good second hand bikes for sale or trade .Put in trials bikes on ebay uk and go through and you,ll find them . Hope you have a good time mate and the best thing is no plod ,no points .As for the misses ,buy her off with some shoes . Welcome .
  22. Hello out there ! Have you ever had the conversation that has those words ' they don't make em like that any more '! He loves air cooled bikes , fair play ,so do i .BUT ,im not adverse to modern things (technical advancement )and call a spade a spade . Told him i was buying a 2000 model year Gas Gas 280 i'd seen on e-bay . ' Oh ! ' he says . 'turning your back on us then are you ?' I have an air cooled Fantic 245 as well and have been friends with this guy for years . The ensuing conversation that followed led him to come to my garage after id been for the bike and started to work on it . Tell you what ,that bike has been a revalation to me from the word go . It,s realy been thought out and no wonder they have left the rest of the manufacturers standing over the years . Brilliant . Information on the said bike is hard to come by . Im looking for a good wiring diagram for a bike to run with out the lighting kit and a new kill switch fitted in to the circuit .My problem being wiring the temp sender in into the correct part of the circuit so the fan operates correctly . Can any one help ? As for my mate , after an hour he says 'well it's o.k but to complicated . I just laughed as he said the imortal words mentioned before , as he looked at my Fantic all bleary eyed , to which i said DON'T turn yer nose up at summet new !The Gasser is brill !
  23. Just back from my 3 week stint so sorry for no acknowledgement . Hows the wrist ? Did you find a place to ride ? Thats the problem around my area ,as it's flat as a witches tit . Plus the cops and tree huggers hassle you if you go on the common land by the side of the river Wyre. There was a massive industrial site near Fleetwood when i lived here before but now it's a housing estate. Same story for others no doubt. Ted
  24. Hello Singy ,I too live in Hindley near Wigan on and off for 18 years and i too am going to join frodsham trials club .Im still recovering from a steel pin put in my shoulder . Been racing two strokes for a while in europe and doing track days but the cost is just a joke as the "it's a classic bike" money makers have moved in and spares have quadrupled in price .So ive gone back to my first bike sport . Think Frodsham have a practice area open to club members at certain times (sure it's on thier web site , directions as well ) have a peek . I'm back off to Denmark for my three week shift on Wednesday and have things to sort out when i get back and it may be August before im ready to compete so keep us posted and maybe i'll see you there . Do you know a lad called Mike Greenough from the Wigan area? He used to have a ride with Montesa when i knew him and he got well known . I used to ride with a lad called Steve Owen who had a Beamish Suzuki . The last time i lived in Wigan was 2000 . Any way give Frodshams club secretary a call and she'll tell you the score. Shyted.
