  1. Hello f1, change the fuel and clean carb out first . New fuel makes a big difference . For all you know it could have been there for a year or more . My 280 had been stood for 2 years and ran flat as a witches tit until i did the above . Hope that is a help to you . Shy t .
  2. Hey ship , hows things ? Right then if you go to the Beta section of this bike type heading and look at the Dan Williams clutch mod . Take more notice of the friction material ,or more to the point ,the spaces in between the raised bits . Our Gasser ones are like modern replacement kits that you get ,the whole surface is covered . File back to the metal with great care and good tools and then you have double the volume of escape way for the oil to go when you compress the clutch . That Dan Williams is an intelligent engineer his post is very factual and his theory is correct , it works ! Also Ship , do you know that engine oil has been used by several European car manufacturers in gearboxes in the past too . Good one mate . Shy t
  3. Further to the post i did on modifying the clutch plates on my GASGAS one day in history , something you guys might want to try if your prepared to spend a few bob on your bikes . I'm going to try this stuff so back to it " Putoline nanno trans " £29.95 per liter . That along with the clutch mod will get me where i've been going ,gear box oil in the gearbox! It's made for comp bikes and wet clutches . And it's not just Putoline light gear box oil .Tried that , and Motul . Anyone using this in their GASGAS today ? Shy t .
  4. Hello pindie , been looking at different oil and trying it as well . Read the tech spec from Putoline and if it's to believed , it's a bike preferential oil with competition in mind . Judging by the response from various people (road racing and MX) and from here i'm giving it a shot when i get back from this trip . All the other 75w oils ive tried have been unsuitable in one way or another but reckon this stuff may do the job . Good find and glad to see some people will take quallity over cheapness to spend on their bikes . Good on ya mate ! Danyorks think you may have your answer here check out the spec on Putolines web site . Myself ,i'd still do the mod as well but thats just me . Best regards Shy T
  5. Before i left for work i examined the front brake problem i had at the Holgate 100 (seized ) . Cleaned the disc off with wire wool and brake cleaner . Filed the casting marks off the brake pads . Stripped the caliper down completely ,drained all the fluid . Checked the seals (new pistons and seals 10 months ago) made sure no debris in the seal recesses . New sealing washers on brake line ,new 'O' ring in caliper .Rebuild . Bleed up with DOT 4 . Ran around garden for a couple of mins ,then tried a little bit to hard to pick the back end up and near ripped my thumb back on the bars . Oh yes it works fine again but what bug's is i didn't find another explanation for the lock up at the trial ( stated in earlier post ) . So on my gas gas a few days ago i....... Ted
  6. Clarky, if you havn't already bought anything . STOP ! You have a 2012 bike . The technology is simple if you stop and think . Your conclusion so far maybe correct but K.I.S.S ! A motto i stand by . If you first start by simply taking down brief notes on the symptoms , call your nearest authorised BETA dealer ,discuss the problem , if you get an "Oh yes, weve seen quite a few like that now and it's definatly such and such ,we can send you details by email " or just tell you on the phone. If your still in the dark Consult the internet manual to do the STATIC timing . Or ask the question . Go from there ,but write what you do down so you don't get lost . All costs you nothing . Best regards Ted .
  7. Seavoyage like the mods and the bikes . How's the 225 go ? Think that in it's self is a good mod . What difference does the silencer make if any apart from maybe clearing the rear tyre when the shocks compressed? Ted .
  8. An original one ,in original condition brought to the uk from Italy made £1500 sold by a uk seller recently on e-bay . I bought a box of fantic spares including a damaged engine for £250 .
  9. Advice on this ! Whatever you try ,just try starting with boot's on . Thirty stitches and a damaged calf muscle was the injury i received from not wearing boots when my bike decided to " fire back " and my mate had adjusted the timing a little bit . Ted .
  10. So anyway ,rewind a bit to talk of falling entry numbers at trials and the influx of young riders . Well , i've done three trials in the Northwest of England in two weeks .There's been over seventy riders at each . That's a decent turnout . A good mix of age's and a few ladies too . I half expected thirty or so . What's the attendance like where you are ? Ted.
  11. Yes couldn't agree more about the ATF .!
  12. Well good responses . Gave my mate a go on mine (280 ) and gave him a bit of a " oh sheet " moment and two foot of clean air between him and the pegs . Ian is thirteen stone and his last bike was errm a BMW 1000 RR . He's competative too. Yes coops he will be coming to backcowm and shipdamite also said the same as you regarding the pro 250 . Think the 200 may suit him but they're thin on the ground . The way my 245 puts it's power down is really good , but compared to the Gas Gas it feels crap to steer around things but it is 24 years old . So coops i'm away Sunday for two weeks and will mail you to let you know when i'm back at home ,and if your fit if you would like to we'll go to Cowm . You will need 2 passport photos , and to fill in the paperwork to join . You pay an annual joining fee and a tenner for the day . Take thirty quid ,as the price might have gone up and that will cover it easy ,or check to see the price on their web site . Providing it's not raining, it will be a good day out . Shy T
  13. And today i sorted my box of 245 spares and have nearly enough to start a new project . But need a chain side outer engine case and same side crank case as the mount on mine is snapped and don't have the missing bit . Will be scouting about in the near future . Ted

Damn and blast ,moved the whole quote ,never mind . Know what you mean with the damage stuff . Just had bit's done at triple S and they look like glass . My a*** will be twitching going over rocks when that baby goes out to Backcowm . If you ever fancy a trip to Backcowm give us a shout . The offer is here to stay at our house and spend the day at backcowm and go back to Norfolk the day after . Don,t have to take us up as i know it's a costly to travel but if you want the offer is there .Ted .
  15. Got to tell you this mod works on GasGas and Fantic too . I twigged on after i bought a new clutch plate set for my old Fantic .Looks like the plates, certainly on European trials bikes ,that they could all come from the same manufacturer as the same adhesion method seems to be used . That's sheer speculation ,but the GasGas was dragging like hell until i carried out the mod and switched to semi-synthetic 5w 30. Bye bye problem . Ted
  16. Hello Danyorks . Have had problems myself on my Fantic and gasgas . The latter recently . Have done the clutch plate mod stated in Dan Williams post and now run Millers 5w30 semi synthetic engine oil at £7.00 per liter from the car accessory shop . The only reason i chose miller is because it was the only semi synthetic available and finding semi in 5w30 is unusual as most manufacturers are fully synthetic . Ted

Ship, checked out your little yam pic's . O.K ain't it for what it is . kinda like my Fantic ,O.K for what it is . Have you seen the yellow one from the states , looks **** hot. Will get a pic of the Fantic as soon as i've got it something like . When i had mine ( grim reaper moment coming up ) bloody kick start snapped after a couple of months and the gear selector was made of Swiss cheese . Frame paint p*** poor , but a good reliable little bike . Ted
  18. Thanks Bilks , and notice you have a gasgas 200 there on your list . Friend of mine wants into trials in the near future and i suggested a 200 would be more friendly to use .All the shops are convincing him a 250 or 300 would be ok . how's yours been ?

    Pistons Etc.

They don't plate it .I certainly don't think putting nikasil over iron would improve thermal transfer and didn't say it would . Also it's only as much hassle getting a re-sleeve as getting re plated . Making sure you don't get someone to cock it up for you is the biggest problem . Rants accepted ,facts stated .
  20. I wonder if any of you knowledgeable types out there happen to have the bearing numbers for the mains and gear box for a year 2000 txt 280 . If you have the seal numbers as well that would be brill . Shyted . Ta .

Ship , i expect they have them done at Langcourt metal re finishers . Didn't think of that , as none of the tuners can support the cost of the tech involved tooling up so give them a call they can turn around in a week ,(they did with my Fantic ) and the result of plating is a more thermally stable process and less friction on the rings than cast iron . I think the wossner pistons are better than the rest , Stan Stephens will say Wiesco ,and they are good but not for the money and in two stroke's personally think mitaka may be ok on a road bike ,but in 2 stroke comp bikes not so good . Or just keep it standard with a new liner . Don't forget that if you go with the plate ,you will need the right rings to run on that . Don't know why plating wouldn't be a wise choice though , that's why every one changed over to it . Ted .

Ship , i take it you put new rings in ? The rings would prevent blow by on the cylinder side, and piston side, the new piston will provide a better inner seal to the rings . In other words the ring's are doing one of their job's better ,fuel mixture plays a part on ring seal too . Rattle can be due to quite a few basic engineering and scientific conditions . with the age of the bike i would say measure the bore with an internal mic first before you buy anything other than a gasket set .Don't forget , your bike has a tapered bore so measure above the exhaust port and just below the carbon line at the top of the bore, below the transfer's too. A manual will give you bore dimensions and tolerances . You may have the option of plating these days if need be . Contact Stan Stephens or Mick Abbey and they will tell you whether that's possible ,that's if you need to re sleeve . A quality piston will be better balanced and with rings quieting things down no end and with a new bore to match , should be silent .I raced and owned loads of Yams from that era and even had a TY 175 when they were new .Oh dear , just seen the grim reaper . What type of woodpecker ?
  23. Zippy .... i have empathy with you for these types of injury . I have a steel pin in my right shoulder and a reattached tendon , it hurts like hell when i've been riding for an hour and hurts the back of my neck as well , gets so bad i can't lift it . The only thing's that seem to work for me are 2 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen then some stretching the day after . Not prescribing any thing , just a bit of relating . And i did not do this on my gas gas today , drum roll, symbol ...... Ted
  24. No is the answer to that one but this has to be more robust and responsive than a standard delorto .Got to admit that's a statement based on a new delorto not a13 year old one on my bike . I have a new delorto and although it's better ,it's not night and day different . So on this day in history ,my gas gas has the front caliper removed and stripped as the mud that collected on it yesterday made it overheat and seize on . Fortunately , the land drain overflow at section one at the Holgate 100,provided a convenient cooling aid and wash off for it to cool the caliper and wash off the mud . More on my findings on another day .
  25. And finally ! Gasgas ready for action ! The clutch mod has worked a treat , no effort whatsoever needed to operate and i'm running Millers semi synthetic 5W-30 at a princely sum of £7 a liter . Can select 1st gear from cold on choke with no problem and get neutral easy , and bought some AC50 ,a new plug at £3.45 from Raceways in Fleetwood ,and a new air filter all Putolined up and ready for tomorrow . Has any one carried out a Mikuni convertion on their Gas Gas today ? OR any other day for that matter ! Tell me as i'm thinking of doing it come the winter . The levers adjust brill and dont forget you can also set the stop on the lever boss for that fine tune . the box they came in is the new home for my allen keys as well so any bunny huggers out there can see us lads and lasses are recycling too ! How goods that! Good luck for the weekend rides Bretheren . Ted
