TY has a reed valve, ported piston, points, TK carb, oil ejection, flexy frame, good brakes, fair set of forks, crappy stock rear shocks. costly fenders.
MAR, has much sexier looks, AMAL carb, motosplat with a heavy flywheel, great front forks, crappy rear shocks, if you buy plastic, cheap fenders,
no reed valve, the 350s are a bear to start sometimes..left kicker {i like}
they handle pretty close, but i feel the yamaha has a better engine, once you swap out the carb, and ditch the oil inection.
the MAR has foward set handlebar clamps, fiberglass tank, TY has a steel tank.
admited im jaded on the MAR, i just had a couple bad rides on them, and have had great rides on the TYs,,dont knock a 175 TY until you have one a try.youll be supprised.
love the picture...as we get old, seems we all rode better, cleaner, and faster when we were young.
id bet my brother will let you take the TY175 for a put...youll be supprised..i was..i thought the 250,s were the thing to have...until i rode a 175..
the one i have is have indian and half chinese....its UUUGLY..and will stay a rat bike..
-
most modern bikes will stay up with no rider, find that sweet spot, it will stay..i like the stop with a penalty..you can stop, but if you dab, its a big ol 5,
like i said. they will ride, stop, clean the section...get a 5 for stopping, then protest the section saying it could only be done with a stop.
and that 5 will be reversed..
i doubt that the no stop will make it to the NATC..already too much drama from it, and nobodys even run an event no stop lol
-
im 200 LBS, ride the expert line..crashed more on an OSSA then any other bike iv ever rode on, in STOCK form..not modified, ect, the only man that can Ride an OSSA was Mick himself, and you cant get the bike that he rode, plain and simple.
i spent alot of money trying to get that POS back brake to work short of converting it to a japanese rear set up, and it kinda stopped after that.
theres a pic of said bike on my garage posting..
i know a lady rider the owned the champ lines back in the 1970,s on a TY 175 her bike was in stock form, and she would clean up on her male counterparts all the time.
what was her name?????Debbie something lol.. didnt she do some movie stunts as well...hmm,..
sorry, the MARs are nice looking bikes, but not for me..big turd sandwich, iv taken a bite of too many lol. ill remember to unhook your clutch cable next time lol...Lineaway...this years expert line will be a little different then last years lol..
iv got a few MAR parts id love to sell..
the TY175 i have, im giving to my brother, i doubt he will have any issues getting power from it..
now dont get booty hurt cuz i dont like to ride the MAR, and like the TY175 better,,we all have our own bikes we like that fit us..
i do like the OSSA,s
have owned 4 or 5 MAR250,s 2 , 350MARs, on 250 MAR Bolger bike, and have a 250 im parting out right now, id love to have a gripper in my collection,,id ride it, and complain about it just as bad lol.
i can tell you from selling parts off em...nobody wants them, or wont pay any kind of money for them, i can get 2 times the money for TY parts, Bultaco parts or montesa parts...
to make an OSSA work... update the carb to a Mikuni, modify the clutch, easy pull lever, springs ect, lighten the flywheel a bit, swap out the rear hub with a drum brake KTM, put a nice silencer on it,..then it might be ready to go..
but why not just go with the TY, its a Japanese copy of the MAR with better brakes, and an easier clutch, just dump the TK carb for a mikuni..
here the support lines are set so soft that any of them would be great, you can ride them, enjoy them, and not worry about crashing and dinging up the bike..
-
going backwards, unless you hop the rear wheel over, is crossing your own path.
-
the OSSA 350 MAR i had was the WORST example of a trials motorcycle iv ever been on..OSSA...no brakes, No clutch, and heavy as a tank.
they do look nice though..
the TY175 is by far leaps and bounds a better trials bike, then the OSSA or the TY250.
never understood the attraction to the TY175...until i rode one..then the light bulb came on...light, nimble, easy to work, good brakes,
granted, if you ride on the easier lines, it wont matter much,
work out your clutch hand so you can pull in the clutch, and hope you dont need to stop.
OSSA used the cable casing to work the brake lever, rather then the cable itself.
keep in mind the new fuel used in the states, will eat the fiberglass tanks, and will pull the glue into the carb, throttle gets sticky, OSSA didnt care if the muffler would quiet the bike, i had to make a nicer pipe to quiet the bike..
iv owned a few MARs, i think they are a sexy looking bike, but like most hot looking women iv went out with..they never performed the way i hoped for..
-
i dont know of any of the riders that compete at that level that think No Stop is a good idea. might be ok for classic trial..but not for the big stuff.
-
i was told March for the USA.
-
these are a pretty basic set up, as long as they are hooked up right, and the sensors ect, are in good working order, they work good,
thermoustat, water temp sensor, fan controler, and condesor, and fan, they should work,
if one of these arent working, then the whole works messes up.
once you find the culprit, youll have it working.
-
stop of foward motion, is a double edged sword, unless they make the sections safe enough for no stop, i dont see it happening here in the states, and it will really only effect the upper classes, expert and Pro riders.
you cant cross your own path, and thats one of the reasons moving backwards in no no,
unless you hop the rear tire over, you will cross back on your on path.
if you look at the NATC web site, you can down load the AMA National rules..
set yourself up with a local club, many of them wont innact the no stop rule, as well as other NATC rulings.
-
your bike is just fine...i would say, find a local club, and find an older experianced rider, or someone that does a school, and sit through a couple hours of basics..leave all the MX bad habbits behind,
and if you listen, and apply all the the basics...you may be able to master Trials after a few years of riding. welcome...
-
fix it right.........
does the headlight work? or does it blow bulbs as soon as you rev the bike...common issue with Technos is the condenser. or regulator as its listed on the parts scemaitc, i have the shop manual for the techno,
it controls the fan and lights, they get hot and fail, if you replace it...id bet your fan will work just fine.
even wiring it straight wont make it work, unless this is good order. you may burn up the fan motor.
email me direct at molinenorski@ {nospam} msn.com remove {nospam} and ill give you the manuals i have.
-
watch for milky oil on the Zero, real bad water pump set up.
-
i wouldnt sweat it, moisture can build up. id bet the pink oil is ATF, change out to MTL, and change it again, sooner then normal. watch for milky oil, if you think a water pump seal is leaking.
-
ok,
if your going to do it..do it right, buy a standard bore piston and ring, and have the cylinder replated, they will need your piston to match it , and follow the heat cycle instuctions from who ever you have replate the cyclinder.
it will be worth the extra money to have it done right.
-
now that we hijacked this guys post lol...
-
had lots of fun riding with you...and i think you agree,,,the A line needs to be...stepped up a bit.. if were finishing with 2s and 3s..rather then 20 or 30 then it can be tougher..hope to see you at Turkey Rock..as fun as roswell was, i dont think im going to drive more then 350 miles this year for a vintage event, im doing some of the National events with NATC, and have a full plate with 3 trials mastering events.
all of use ride the advance line and higher that ride the A line, so bigger stuff isnt an issue...right?
-
im the EMT for the ITSA and some of our modern events,,id rather have you ride out, then pack you out.
the expert line is the only one that will change, the others will stay the same level,
so, unless you ride the expert line, you can ride bus, as usuall, or if not. maybe its time to step up and move up?
-
most of Colorado,s events are southern located, im mastering a new venue just west of Ft Collins this year, and will be mastering the ITSA event at Turkey Rock...so..Expert riders may want to train a bit this winter lol. i plan on stepping up the A line a tad. though it will be a vintage event...modern support riders are always welcome. and a good place to learn the basics.

i would install new springs, and change out to fresh for oil, as it should be changed during maint, and then see if you need more.
take your upgrades one step at a time, or youll chase a tail that cant be caught.
all i did on mine was install new springs, and add Honda Line 7Wt oil, works like a charm, and made a world of differance to the way the bike works,
if you stiil have sag...and i doubt that you will, then add shims ect.
adjust your forks and shock to stock settings, and adjust as needed.
im working on my new{used} 4T that was adjusted poorly the old owner had installed shims, and had the spring adjusted up as far as it would go, as well as all the adjustments turned all the way up..
i removed the junk, installed new springs, and will change the fork oil, when i get to that point, still working on the back half of the bike.
-
havnt talked to Ron in a few years, ill check with them next week.
-
heaver oil, will slow the action down..my local dealer has the 2012 spring sets in stock. if you PM me, ill give you his info.
-
our club has some of the best riders in the U.S. but welcomes first timers, we host some of the top national events, as well as great club events, we have a very active modern and vintage group of riders.
Trials, is a great sport, that will soon take up a big part of your life. heck, dont think iv rode my enduro bike, in 6 mos...but rode a trials bike last sat in the snow lol..
look me up on Facebook, ill get you set up
-
anyone know of a sorce for new plastic for the Beta TRs ? i have someone that can repro them, but a 1,000.00 order is pretty steep right now.
TIA
-
needs more rocks lol....RMTA steering meeting is Sat, we set avents and update rules ect,, 10 acres is a great play and pratice area, big rocks...really big lol
look me up on facebook. i can get you started with RMTA and other Trials venues, in the area,
-
the KX400 side cover is the one with the lever on the top. i have a nice one on the way.
ill strip and polish the cover, as i dont like the black look.
after searching cables. the KT and the KX 400 share the same cable, ill find out soon enough.
also, picked up a KX steering head, to clean up the handle bar area, and get rid of the pulled back riser.
ill update as it gets done.
i looked into the 420, and other KDX side covers,..the KDX has a different cover all together, wont fit.
