when i did this upgrade, all that was needed, was to remove the wimpy springs, and install the new ones, no spacers, ect.
the cost was less then 150.00 for both springs, i changed the fork oil at that time as well, and returned the shock and fork settings to base adjustments, and adjusted them to fit my riding style.
i used honda line fork oil, only do to having a case of it..7wt.
-
standard 2012 springs front and back are all thats needed...i weigh in at over 200 LBS, it was a the best thing iv done on the 09.
-
lighten the KT...remove the headlight, tail light, oil enjection, key switch, light switch, and the road legal wire harness, thats about 40 pounds of crap you wont need in a trials section,
i have no trick parts other then moving the bars up, Koni rear shocks, and custom made down and back pegs,
light engine mods, KX clutch cover, will clean up the look, that is on my list, and maybe change out the steering head to a KX.
modern trials tires are a bit lighter as well,
my bike with fuel weighed in just under 170LBS,
we have an event here, thats both modern and twin shock,, ride 30 sections on your twin shocker in the morning, eat a quick lunch, then 30 on your modern bike, no poggo sticking is needed if you know how to ride the basics, keep it smooth, and ride the bike, relax,
usually this is a 3 day event, and ends up 150 sections in 3 days, we call it the iron man...usually less the 5 riders finish this class.
i can and do ride both, and have pushed our vintage club to add a single shock air cooled class, its sparked a new interest in the club, i have a few riders that would have never thought about joining the {old guys} that have TY,s and Cotas being prepped for this years sections...ITSA Rockymountain riders on the expert line, should hit the gym this winter, and ride when you can, ill be trials mastering a couple of the events, and will take that expert line up a couple notches.
-
change the hydrolic fluid, moisture can build up, and make it drag, caution...this is not a fun job..
-
247 Cotas are known to clog up the muffler, or the mid pipe with oil and carbon,
remove them, clean the nasties, and see how she runs.
-
alt, and rider level have a bearing on twin shock, pre 1982? id say, fantic, Montesa 348, if you like to work the engine, the TY 175 is sweet.
not that easy to ride in its stock trim, but one of my favs, modified is the Kawasaki KT 250, hard to beat it if its set up right.
post 82 to say 87? TLR 250 Honda would be my first choice, Fantic second, and the SWM jumbo.
mind you. this is for expert level, and 5400 feet and up, with a 200 plus pound rider.
not sure why you think twin shockers are heavy pigs, my KT weighs in at 168 lbs, only a few pounds more then my Beta evo,
you have to have the basics down pat, and if you train yourself to ride no stop as much as you can, then the clutch isnt an issue, all my twin shockers have one finger clutches, iv had to work them to make then that way,
lighten flywheels, and change timing a bit, perks em up a bit, i had a 242 Cota, it was ok, but a turd by the standard of the other bikes available of the day,
in 1985 you could get a Fantic Pro, that was leaps and bounds better then that cota, then if you dare,, the SWM Jumbo, it was a handful, lots of power when you wanted it, hard to tune at high alt,
the Gagiva and other Gagiva engined bikes were available by 85, moto merlin ect..not many over here, but in the UK and Europe, i see then available all the time.
i ride both classic {vintage} and modern bikes, i do so for the challenge, i love watching someone struggle with a modern bike on a section, and then i clean it like a boss on old steel.
ride a few bikes before you shell out the money for a new steed, make sure you can get common parts, like cables, ect, and that you can and are welling to work on it..they do break now and then, if you ride them hard like they should be.
-
MTL 85 works great, if you dont like the on and off clutch, you can get a smooth clutch kit from Beta.
i used MTL in all my Betas, from the air cooled to the newest water cooled..change it often, and avoid using ATF.
-
welcome to your new addiction.
were having a trial in the North area this year..
RMTA is a great place to start..
-
-
i make a sweet spark arrestor that fits that muffler..if you need one to run on public land in your state.
-
avoid using ATF in the beta , i use 500CCs of maxima MTL85.. your clutch will work much better with MTL over the ATF, i learned the hard way.
after 3 clutches swelling and failing in my Rev, i asked the Beta factory mech at a national, he gave me the headsup on MTL, iv been using it on my Betas since,
from the TR32 to the Evo 290, the only auto trans fluid that was usable is GM transfer case lube, for 96 and up GM trucks, Tru Trac i think its called,
i know its spendy, regular oil changes, are cheap insurance on these bikes.
-
you not supposed to drink it lol.
ill give the Motul a try and see how she works, im going from a evo 290, to the 300 4T..im sure its a learning curv, im used to 4T power from my TLR, and like it alot..so this bike should work well with my riding style.
-
just picked up my Evo 4T today, what oil works best. stays cool, keeps the top end safe, and keeps the clutch smooth?
thanks.
-
i have an S3 T pipe on my Evo, works very well, sounds just fine, a little more bark, but..it is a mans bike,
smoothed out the bottom end a bit, made the bike smoother..and looks awesome.

update on pistons...the ATC 250 is pretty much the same head, i have found a few standard and over sized pistons , but havnt had the time to ask poweroll if they make a high comp piston, the 200 hot cam should be the same dems with more power, they also offer some heaver springs.
-
a few years ago, when AHRMA was hot, i planned on building a 250 Trials Husky, based on the oval cased engine, OSSA flywheel, yamaha front end, with a 69 to 71 frame, do to the fact that at that time, nobody wanted those years of the Husky, do to the rules and class they ran in.
i wanted to compete in the Classic class, basicly any kit framed 175cc penton, Sachs, Puch ect, including right hand shift spanish 4 speeds,
i figured the right hand shift 4 speed Husky would have been ok. so i rounded up the bits , then contacted the powers that Be with AHRMA.
after a couple months they responded. that it would have to be a split frame...like the MX classic class, and that the bike i was building would compete in modern classic...keep in mind i ride the expert line...
and i didnt see myself, doing worth a crap on that line, with such a bike, i still have some of the bits, and that stupid ruling was the beginning of the end for me and AHRMA..
but, i would have made a badass Husky trials bike for sure... lol
-
buy 2 sets of these, replace the mounting screws with longer and better quality, any color, 2 week shipping.
you good to go.

if you plan on riding and crashing....ASV folding levers...they are pricey. but worth it, smooth, and adjustable.
i have them on all my Trials bikes, modern and vintage.
-
iv seen that and a couple other clapped out bikes from the same seller, with the same story, trying to fetch top dollar..
like anything collectable...buy the item, not the story..
though they may have been owned by him, doubt he ever competed on them.. without pics, it just didnt happen.
-
its a big pain in the rear end to post pics here, however, ill see what i can do, work load is a little heavy this week,
to explain it, once you mill or grind off the pull back mounts, youll see 2 holes that normally mount the headlight,
i over sized them, and you can use a number of mounts, from 7/8s to fat bar type, i used the Husky mounts, as i have a few sets from old projects.
use what i have rather then spend more money.
-
i milled off the pull back bar mounts, and installed higher mounts {husqvarna} so that the bars sit over the center nut, like a modern bike., moved my pegs back and down even with the bottom of the frame,
moved the lower shock perch back 2 inches,
im 6"2, and this along with 5" high bars, made the bike a lot nicer to ride on bigger stuff.
front springs were changed out to KTM Senior springs, they fit and work very well, after i took a couple inches off of them, better then a bushing in the old soft worn out springs,
KYB 15 inch shocks off a Fantic Pro that i scrapped, set on the soft setting, tires are IRC rear, and michellen front,
updated the levers with unbreakable ASVs. pricey, but sweet, bumbed the timing up a bit, makes it harder to start, but lots more ponies.
-
my green lady, 1200 original miles, 300 of those are expert line trials miles. ebay buy from the original owner, second set of tires, i removed the originals, only real mods, are suspension and steering, removed the oil enjection..
-
-
iv seen that bike before, nice, but i dont care for the black and white frame and motor
-
would like to install a 74 76 KX clutch cover on my KT 250, has anyone else done this? if so, can i use the KT clutch or do i have to swap out anything else to make it work?
thanks
