  1. I always try to run the smallest sprockets possible anyway. I was just wondering what was the most common used combination to use as a starting point. I tend to prefer a slightly higher ratio and to use the clutch occasionally as i find this effectively gives me a "longer" gear and reduces the need to change gear in a section. Thanks for the responses everybody
  2. Good question . I was thinking 428 but some local riders use 420 .
  3. Just a question. My feeble memory seems to recollect that there used to be perceived wisdom that one sprocket should be an odd number to even out wear on the sprockets. Do people not bother with this any more or is my brain cell having a wobbly ?
  4. Hmm confusing. I ride mostly rocks and have a low second gear option fitted. Decisions decisions
  5. Well the sows ear project is progressing very slowly and i am now at the point where i am looking to fit sprockets. Got a 12 tooth crankshaft sprocket fitted so what is the best combination gearbox and rear sprocket that people have found
  6. So you are going to build a special great. Use your engineering skills and create something really special and enjoy the process and riding your special. Sounds great to me just enter it as a special. After all its not about the winning just the fact that you are out enjoying yourself on your home brewed special. The fact that you wont be competing for Championship points doesnt matter does it
  7. The coming back down is worse than the going up believe me. Real heart in the mouth stuff.
  8. What about when you go to look at a section ? The bike will be unattended for probably 15 mins while walking Pipeline for instance.
  9. Ive just updated the Clubs website with a report and results of last Sundays trial and current Championship standings in case anyone is interrested. Go to www.peakclassic.co.uk for full details
  10. Thanks for that Andy i received the photos but am unable to open, they crashed my laptop to be honest, but should have the write up on the site by Wednesday evening. Thanks again to all the riders who turned out to support the club.
  11. Just a reminder that this weekend Peak Classic hold round 10 of their 2015 Club Championship at Bracken Rocks, Holloway Nr Matlock Derbyshire. Classes for British Bikes, Twinshocks, Pre 95 air cooled monos and over 50's on moderns. Routes for Expert, Classic Expert, Intermediate, Classic Intermediate and Clubmen. Start time as usual 11.00 am but dont forget to put your clocks back one hour extra in bed See you there
  12. Thats why the Drayton Bantams have been so popular. You try building one to the same standard for £6500 . The Sows Ear project is going to cost a lot more than that but thats me i do know better but rarely follow my own advice
  13. Just measure other peoples. Choose the successful ones preferably. Also the dia affects power delivery.
  14. Why use a 20" dia wheel ? fronts should be 21" rears 18" no decent tyres available for 20"
  15. Not difficult to make but if you dont fancy that then just use a WES rear silencer that fits the gap and have a new bracket and inlet tube welded on
  16. Sorry Andy i havent but take the A5012 out of Cromford heading for Buxton / Leek. At the Holly Bush Pub crossroads turn left onto the B5056 for approx. 1.5 miles. Straight on at the crossroads in Longcliffe then under the old railway bridge and past the wood on your left turn into the first gate after the woods on your left and you are there. Hopefully see you tomorrow.
  17. T&MX have missed it out of regs available and whats on yet again. Please pass it on to any of your friends who might be interrested. Such a shame to put all the work in laying out over such a large course if nobody turns up
  18. Thats the point though Jon i have an account at Talon they make sprockets for Villiers but they cant sell me one. I can buy sprockets for any other bike from them but Villiers services have stopped them selling them direct even to account holders. Grrr. I used to get them from Simon Bateman but now he's sold up to Villiers services i cant which is a shame as i really liked dealing with Simon who is a top bloke. Thanks for the contact above will give them a try. Sorry for hijacking the thread
  19. Hi just a reminder that this weekend we have round 9 of the Club Championship at Longcliffe Tops start time 11.00 am as usual. Please come along and support the club plus let your bike have its head for a change as Loncliffe Tops wide open spaces makes a welcome change from the usual pocket handkerchief venues. Usual Classes for British Bikes, Twinshocks, Pre95 air cooled monos and Over 50's on moderns plus Expert, Classic Expert, Intermediate, Classic Intermediate and Clubman routes. See you there
  20. Unless you are trying to buy a sprocket for a villiers engine
  21. Only good for bragging rites IMHO. Thing is the Bantam started out as a 3 speed which then became a 4 speed. Effectively all they did was like everybody else, including Bultaco with the 6 speed, they slimmed down the existing gears to get the extra gears into the same space. I know modern materials and oils are a quantum leap from what was available back then but i would be concerned about longevity of the gear cluster in a 5 speed. There will still be people who will buy one though so as someone once said to me "the legality or not of parts i make is not my concern. If people want to buy it i will make it. I have to earn a living after all " and you cant argue with that can you ?
