  1. Ok then I am rebuilding my 1980 Montesa 123 and i have replaced the points, condensor and all the wires from the stator. I replaced each wire as I took one off so I am pretty sure that it is wired correctly. I set the points and kicked the engine over - no spark. So i set about setting the timing using a dial gauge and ohmeter. Connecting one probe from the ohmeter to the single LT wire going to the coil and the other to an earth I get a constant beep. I tried all of the other 3 wires and got the same constant beep, I also tried different earth locations with the same result and still no spark. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? Cheers
  2. Thanks for the replies: Checked the gear chaange actuater it seems to be all the way in. Have tried those part numbers, they are the same on the 123 but they are NLA and Sandifords couldn't give me the dimensions. I did notice that there is a wear mark on the gear starter where it runs with the gear idle starter so have taken the measurement and come up with 17mm ID, 27mm OD and 1mm thick. Will try to find/manufacture a washer/spacer with these dimensions and see how it goes. Cheers John
  3. I have refitted the clutch onto the shaft but it rubs on the gear change mechanism, indicating that there should be 1 or more spacers. I have a parts book but it isn't precise with this matter, I have also spoken to Sandifords but the info they had was not conclusive, they did say it appeared to have a spacer but do not have it and could not give me the dimensions. Can any one shed a little light on this for me? Cheers John
  4. Wayne, I did think about running lights but I just want to get it up and running for now. Cheers john
  5. Thanks Wayne, Mine doesn't have the handle bar switch, headlamp, tail light or horn but it gives me a better idea than I had before. It is proving quite a challenge to restore this bike, there doesn't seem to be too much info available on this model. Cheers John
  6. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the wiring diagram from? I'm trying to find out what the four wires coming off the generatos are for. Cheers John
  7. I have a couple questions with regards to the above. I am at the point of putting the transmission into the engine cases. When locating the selector drum should it be in neutral or a specific gear and how do I tell if it's in the correctly selected gear? Cheers John
  8. I have fitted a Mikuni to my 1980 123, got it from allensperformance.co.uk
  9. What is the process for rebuilding shocks? I have stripped the marzzochi's off my 123 Montesa and am tryin to decided whether it would be cheap to repaint and assemble my self or just buy some new ones.

    Montesa 200 Parts

The 123 head has no gasket either. I have got most of the parts I needed from InMotion, BVM and Sandifords. Base gasket was listed aas NLA so I bought some gasket card and made my own, seems OK but the test will be when I fire it up again. The gearbox cover gasket might be a home made job too!

    Montesa Cota 200

Looks like a nice job. I am doing a 1980 123 and I'm stuck with the shocks. I have stripped them down but do not know the procedure for rebuilding them! Any advice would be gratefully received.
  12. Thanks for the replies, I have found a suspension specialist just up the road from me, who is going to have a look but if he can't help will try the chap on ebay and 5wt oil. Cheers
  13. I have managed to strip down the Marzocchi rear shocks on my bike. Does anyone know if spares (O rings etc) are available and what weight and quantity of oil I should use. Cheers
  14. I have changed the carb on my Montesa 123 for a Mikuni with a main jet of 190. The exhaust is now leaking black oily gunge, is this because the jet is too big or is it something else. The plug is a NGK B6ES. Cheers John
  15. Kilkenny Quarry on the A436 near Andoversford.

    Fuel Mix

What fuel/oil mix ratio should I be using in Montesa 123 (1980)? Cheers John
  18. Thanks MotoVintage, depending on replies that would probably have been my next question. Back to the 'Web' to do some research. Cheers John
  19. I have got a Montesa 123 (1980), and am trying to source spares for the carb, which is marked up as Amal 720. A Montesa website lists the carb as Amal L720/403. The problem is when I search for this carb I can't find anything even on sites that have Amal carbs and spares. There are similar types but nothing that has the fuel entering the side through a 'T' banjo and with fuel float bowl secured by a clip. Any assistance would greatly received. Cheers
  20. I have got a 1980 Montesa 123 and the rear brake pedal has seen better days. I contacted Sandifords and they informed that the part is NLA, so does any one have one lying around or know if they would be available in Spain? Cheers
  21. Talking to the chap who serviced my heating he used do a bit of trials and said that the Police often go up Aggs on their off roaders but usually just waved as they rode passed. He also said Cheltenham council used to advertise Kilkenny as a practice venue until some one sued them after breaking their leg So now they don't endorse it but it is still know as a practice venue. Had my first afternoon up Aggs Well I say afternoon it was only an hour and I was knackered but it was good to be back on a trials bike more practice and a bit of phys and I may enter a comp.
  22. Thanks for all the info will get out this week and check them out.
  23. I'm just returning to trials after a very long lay off and was wondering if there are any practice venues around the Gloucester area? I want to see if I can still do it before entering a competitive trial. Cheers.
  24. Has the letter originated from the council, or has he abused his position and stolen council headed paper to write to you himself? A phone call to the council and some sublte questions could be quite revealing.
