  1. Hey Crasher Go to the following site, southwestmontesa.com, and have a look at their model gallery. You will see what your 348 should look like. I have a 348 which was painted black when I bought it but red is the way to go.
  2. The coil could be faulty as well!

    Ty250a

Tony/Dave Thanks for the advice. I missed out on the carb you suggested on Ebay but will keep my eye out for the one Tony suggested. Thanks again. Manuel

    Ty250a

Hi all. I am in the process of restoring one of the earliest Ty's and need an original second hand carb for it. The motor runs with the carb currently on it (not the right one) but is not running properly. No get up and go, bad acceleration and very very bad performance on full throtle. Any ideas where I can get one? or if someone has one they want to part with, please let me know how much. Thanks
  5. Hi All I don't think it matters what type of condenser you use. I had ignition problems with my early 70's Cota. I took the old condenser out and chucked it away as it was not working. I mounted a second hand condenser I had from my Land Cruiser on the frame as close as I could to the coil making sure it was well earthed to the frame and crimped it to the black wire going into the coil. No problems. Starts 1 or 2 kick every time even though I don't use the bike for up to 5 or 6 weeks at a time. See ya
  6. You can also try bultacouk.com They seem to have heaps of spares and they are not too bad on prices
  7. John I had another think about your problem. Before you pull the head and barrel off like I advised you earlier, take the engine covers off and see if something has come adrift to stop the engine from turning. If there is a problem there it is most likely to be on the clutch side (left) as there are more bits and pieces that can come off and lodge themselves between the primary gear and the gears on the clutch basket. Anyway, see how you go. I am happy to help if you need any. It may be better if you contact me on my email address, belldane@skymesh.com.au as I get to messages quicker. Manuel
  8. I have the above bike, has air filter box but no air filter fittings to fit the filter to. Does anyone know what I need to fit the foam filter to the back of the carb?
  9. I came accross the same problem on a Montesa Enduro. I thought the motor had seized also but it turned out to be a stripped gear in the gearbox which had lodged itself between the main shaft and one of the gears in the box. Luckily no damage was done. I think the best thing to do is to take the head off, if the barrel does not come off after taking off the four sunken allen screw nuts then you have seized the motor. If it does come off and the motor will still not turn then it is an internal problem and you will have to the take the motor out and split the cases. Let me know if you need any help. I have done about 4 or 5 247's and may be able to put in my 2 bobs worth in.
  10. Hi all Thanks for all your help with this. I actually managed to get the gear off without the need of the angle grinder. PeterB - I used the freeze in a can on the crankshaft, got the primary gear so hot it nearly started to glow( while all the tension was on the puller) and it just popped off. There were no marks on the crankshaft or gear to suggest why it had not come off easier. I suspect it may have been tightened in excess of the specs in the first place. Thanks again
  11. Thanks for the reply Feetupfun Yes the primary gear is the same as the 348. I rebuilt my 348 a couple of years ago and there was no drama getting the gear off. I actually made a puller very similar to the one you sent me photos of. No problems it just popped off. This time, however, when I applied the pressure the welding came undone ( no doubt my sh welding job) I think I will get in touch with Jared. he is very helpful and have had dealings with him over the years. I think the angle grinder is looking really good at the moment as I have other primary gears the same. Will keep in touch and let you know how I finally get this b-----d off in case you ever come accross the same problem. Thanks for your help mate. See ya. Belldane
  12. Hi all. I need help/ideas on how to remove the primary gear on a Cota 247. I have used the four letter word many many times but it just will not come off. I have attached a gear puller to it, tightened it as hard as I could, heated the gear with oxy, belted the shaft on the puller with the biggest hammer I could find and it still will not come off. The thing is still in the shed with the puller on and plenty of tension on it. Failing that the gear may pop off by some miracle, I will have no choice but to get a grinder to it and cut it off. That is unless someone out there has any better idea. Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Belldane

    Clutch

Hi I dont own a 315r but find that if I dont ride my bikes for a while the same problems happens. Try starting the bike and let it run for about 10 minutes, pull the clutch lever in a few times while it is warming up then try to engage 2nd gear. Mine works always and after riding for a few minutes it's fine. Belldane
  15. Jaan Do as Peterb says. Exhaust systems are extremelly hard to understand and you nearly have to be a rocket scientist to understand how they work for best performance. I know because I once tried to change a low down pipe to an under the tank type on a Montesa enduro I owned. The result was absosultatly awful. The enduro bike was great for trials riding, plenty of low down power but nothing on top. Just bend the bracket. Belldane
  16. Hi Jaan I bouhgt an old 348 with a bent shaft as well. All I did was took the screw out of the top, made sure to catch the spring and the little ball bearing in there and then put the shaft in a vice with bits of aluminium on the jaws to stop damage to the chrome. Get a piece of pipe long enough to snnuggly fit over the top of the shaft and bend it back where it should be. Those levers are built like tanks and will not break. Belldane
  17. Oh well Like one of our Prime Mnisters here in Australia once said " Life was not meant to be easy" Malcolm Fraser that was and he actually owned some Bultacos. ( he must have had Montesas before that!!). I have just finished putting my motor back together with no dramas. One thing to whatch out for when putting the gearbox back in is that you assemble the whole lot together on a bench (input and output shafts with all gears and pins as well as the gear slider drum attached) and put it into half the crankcase as a unit. Put plently of grease on those dowell pins and those little ******* shims as evething will fall out. Oh almost forgot! While you have the motor in pieces I suggest you check all the internal bearings because if they are a bit suspect now, they may fail on you in the not too far distant future and you will have to go through all this bull**** again. I also suggest putting new seals on the crankcases. The other seals don't worry about. If they leak you don't have to take the flywheel and the clutch off tom replace them. Have fun and please let me know if you run into problems. Belldane
  18. Hi guys If it is of any help, I am in the process of restoring another old Cota 247 and when I split the cases, no matter how careful I was, the same thing hapened to me. I ended up with half a crankcase of gears and dowell pins. There are definately three different sizes. The pin lenght on the primary shaft (input) is 21mm. on the output shaft the pins between 1st and 2nd gear are 24mm and the pins between 4th and 5th are 28.5mm. If you are not sure where those gears are go to www.southwestmontesa.com and on the home page at the top select Repair Manual. In that Manual there is a section on gearboxes and details of where each gear is located. Hope that helps. Belldane

    Airbox Rubber

You can try Jared at jb@southwestmontesa.com or bultacouk.com. Good luck
  20. Hi Dan Try southwestmontesa.com. Jared Bates is a really nice blcke to deal with and his prices are not too bad. Good luck with the the 247. I have a few montesas down here in Australia ranging from 348 to 247's and my favourite is the 247. One is fully restored and goes like the wind. Even my dog can't keep up. Keep up with the search mate, it will be worth it. Manuel
