  1. Try southwestmontesa.com but check the condition of the kick starter shaft before you start spending money. If it has snapped, which was a very common problem with that model, you will be very hard pressed to find another. They are as rare as rocking horse poo.
  2. OK Carb should be : Dellorto PHBH20 Type BS Needle jet AV264 Main Jet 105 Pilot Jet 55 Choke jet 65 Air screw 1.75 turns from closed Slide 60 Needle in 2nd pos from top Hope that helps
  3. I have had a 348 and a couple of 247's for yeras and have never had a problem with the kick starters. One model which was prone to problems was the 173. Kick starter shafts used to snap, I know because I did it to one I once owned. Those shafts were impossible to find and as rare as rocking horse poo.
  4. Been a while since I rebuilt my old 247 but I have a feeling that those pins where 3 different lenghts. Contact Jared Bates at southwestmontesa.com and he should be able to tell you where they go. Before you do that and go splitting the cases make sure that the shifter drum in lined up correctly. The Haynes Manual should tell you how to do it.
  5. Oil should be 10w 30 or auto transmission oil which I have been using for years. By the way the case is not worn. All of mine look the same
  6. Try Jared Bates at southwestmontesa.com I got a set of rings for my 348 a couple of years ago
  7. My T250 was is very good nick when I got it and from the sounds of it you have got some very serious work ahead of you. Try bultacouk.com for spares and any advice you may need.
  8. I had problems here in Australia finding the airbox. Could not find one and ended up getting one of those foam pod ones and no problems in rain, dust, etc.
  9. I am assuming that what you refer to as the clutch drum is actually the clutch basket, that is where all the clutch plates slide into. They are all exactly the same. In fact when the clutch started slipping on my 348, I replaced the whole unit with one from a 247 and no problems whatsoever.
  10. Try Jared Bates at southwestmontesa.com. He should be able to tell you the year of the bike by the engine number
  11. That primary drive gear can be a real pig to remove, especially if it has been there for a while. Get yourself the best and biggest puller you can get your hands on. tighten the puller as much as you can and apply plenty of heat to the gear. Oxy I found the only way. Keep on tightenning as you apply more heat but for God's sake keep your head out of the way. It will either pop out gently or come out at a hundred miles an hour. Once that is done you will also have to contend with the sprocket which is also tapered. Plenty of fun times ahead of you I think.
  12. What condition are your sprockets and chain in ?
  13. Sounds like you should have stayed in bed ! It is hard to work out what is causing all your problems without actually riding and hearing the bike running but I will give you my thoughts anyway. When you dropped it going up that hill did your fall accidently turn the choke on? That would explain more than average smoke and the fuel usage. The sparks I have no idea unless something has gone terribly wrong in the combustion chamber but it does not sound good. As for the crank seals, huge amounts of smoke is a tell tale sign the seals are bad but I doubt they would have packed it in after a couple of falls. The problem with the idling could also be choke related ie running too rich. Just a few ideas. Hope that helps
  14. The size of the photos you are trying to send me might be too big for the ISP you are using. Get in touch with them and let them work out what the problem might be. My email address is belldane@skymesh.com.au but I reckon you already have it. See ya
  15. The problem with all those Amals for many years has been that the slide is made out of the same material as the stuff it slides on. Get the carb re sleeved, new slide and no more problems. In the long run it will be cheaper and you don't have to muck around with jetting ect. Take it from me, jetting a new carb to suit can be a pain in the a*** and you will always be fiddling with it and never get it quite right. See ya
  16. I have two 247's with the red tanks so just wanted something different. Give your email address and I will send you a pic. In all the years I have been with TC I have never been successful in posting a photo !
  17. Hi I had the tank painted with 2 pack at the same time as the frame but I went a bit different and had it painted black. It doesn't look too bad
  18. Get some quotes to get the frame painted with 2 pack paint. I had mine done about 5 years ago and it is much, much stronger paint than acrylic.
  19. Hi and welcome. No spark could be a number of things. Faulty coil or condenser, kill switch or even condensation or water on the points if it rained while the bike was left outside. It is really a matter of elimination and since you have the two bikes it should not be hard to find what the problem is by swapping the bits around. Your other problem of the bike going into gear while idling is a new one on me but try this anyway. At the back of the engine there is a detent spring which has a plunger which rests against the shift drum. Undo the nut, take out the spring and stretch it slightly to put a bit more tension on the plunger. Hopefully that will sort the problem out.

    Montesa 349

I have a 348. That cam adjuster lines up with the middle of the bolt just up from it at about 2 oclock. Try it as it may be the same. See ya
  21. Should not do that. Check that the clutch cable is not frayed somewhere and is well lubricated. Also check the condition of the clutch plates as they may be worn. I have a 348 and it is as smooth as silk. What sort of oil have you got in the clutch side of things?

    montesa 172

Top parts are completely different and you are right about the longer conrod. The bottom bits? Don't know. Could be same as the 123. To tell you the truth have never compared them but it would not surprise me if a lot of the parts are the same. I have a couple of 348's and 247's and a lot of the parts are exactly the same. Good luck with the restoration. Just in case, if you can find another 172 motor, buy it mate and make sure that the kick starter shaft is OK. They where prone to breaking and finding another one are as rare as rocking horse poo. You probably know this but I am going to tell you anyway. The 172 stands for the weight of the bike, 172 pounds. I really have no idea of cc capacity but I would guess you are right in saying about 156cc.
  23. Hi, You will not find a Manual for the 348 anywhere. The only thing available is the parts book which came with the bike. To tell you the truth it is quite informative of where things go but it does not go into the detail of how to do things. You can get a copy from southwestmontesa.com . See ya
  24. You are very, very lucky to have got it off. I have struggled for hours on end to get those gears off on my bikes and like Dave_T has said when they do come off, either motors can fly across the room or the gear can also come off and leave a permanent tatoo on your forehead. Go buy yourself a lottery ticket, you must be blessed. Wait until you have to take the sprocket off, specially if it has not been changed for a while !!
