  1. Thanks for that, I think my problem was in trying to put the wrong leg of the spring at the bottom, it went on much easier the other way up.
  2. Hi, My young lads 2003 Sherco 290 has broken the gearchange spring. I have the replacement in front of me now, does it go on just as it comes out of the packet or do the legs need squeezed together to fit each side of the boss and give more pressure on the boss?. If it's the latter, how do you do it, I just stuck one leg through my thumb trying!!.
  3. Next question :- What are the real differences between the standard K2f, the K2fc and the Wader magnetos. The K2fc has a raised bit on the top of the casing but nothing appears different inside and the Wader is painted gold. Is there more that isn't obvious?.
  4. Thanks for that, the ordinary K2f black ones are easy to find.
  5. Hi, Can anyone tell me where i can get a red specification plate for a Lucas K2f competition magneto please?.
  6. What possible grounds could the Forestry Commission have for making an official written complaint to the SSDT Committee about trail riders riding their bikes on a road that appears to have nothing to do with the SSDT route?. I've followed with interest the forum posts about "muppets" and "illegal riding" but having supped more pints of the local Atlas ales during SSDT week than were good for me, in the company of apparently knowledgable locals, I get the impression that the locals attitudes to riding bikes in the local hills differs greatly from the wild opinions sometimes expressed in these forums. Mike Rapley (Centrally Speaking, 06.05.07) reports that he was told by Willie Gordon, the husband of the pre-65 secretary that already by the Saturday night they had received complaints from landowners. Are we allowed to know which landowners complained, about what, and where the alleged offences took place. Local buzz was that there is a grumpy old shepherd or gamekeeper somewhere (not a landowner) who always complains about everything anyway!. We can all go on about photographing "offenders" (I actually took notes of some myself this year) and reporting them to the police etc, (although not quite sure where the "illegal" aspect comes in) but I suspect we can't really make any reasoned comment unless we know where the specific complaints lie.
  7. It's a chopped Monobloc with a remote float chamber, normally used for speed events - road racing, grass tracking, etc. The remote rubber mounted float is used to stop vibration from frothing the fuel in the carb. leading to fuel starvation at awkward moments. This one looks to have had a pretty hard life!. Just noticed it's been crudely sleeved down to suit the cub with what looks like a piece of copper water pipe.
  8. Errrr, isn't that what it was advertised as on the ebay listing?. Not the first time someone has bought a bike and come on the forums to ask what it was, can't really understand that meself!.
  9. An old guy now dead who used to live near us always talked about Inter Club Meets near Fintry in the 1960s with a trial a scramble and a road bike rally all on the same day. He always talked about seeing Vic Allan on a works DOT flying down some of the steep hills in the scramble.
  10. Isn't that just what most of us are saying?. The sad thing is that OTF seems to give the impression that he can't enjoy himself because other people have been able to spend more money on their bikes!. What does it matter what other riders do, I've always taught my lad to focus on the fact that the only person he is competing against is actually the Clerk of the Course, who has used devilish cunning to try to take marks off him!.
  11. Yeah, sorry must admit my "research" wasn't very scientific. I counted up the number of entries in Nationals and Championships (the ones I could find on the web!) and they seemed pretty low compared to a few years ago. Also noticed that one big club (website!) had only had 7 entries at each of their last 2 CtoC trials. With hindsight none of this is necessarily representative of the Scotland wide picture. My point about news, reports, etc is really that if like me you don't fancy or are not capable of actually riding in an organised trial but have an interest in bikes and trials, the next best thing is reading an interesting report about it. I have nothing but admiration for anybody who sticks their head above the parapet and organises anything for other people, I couldn't organise the proverbial in a brewery.
  12. OK, now that the ladies have settled their off-topic dispute with handbags at dawn, does anyone have any sensible comments on the perception that scottish trials might be in one of their downward trends following the huge influx of newcomers after the Foot and Mouth epidemic. And could it be that the lack of trial previews, reports, results, and general scottish chat on TC and on SACU and some club websites doesn't help to retain interest in the game or give inspiration to would-be competitors?. Slapshot3 suggested that changes in club personnel might have a lot to do with the information shortage, is this a new generation type thing?. Most guys of John Collins era who grew up with pre-65 bikes as a matter of course are now out of the game and many of the children they encouraged have also discovered mortgages, etc and are out of the game too. Bearing in mind the often quoted "I have a life outside trials you know" when even the mildest criticism is made, are we now into the Margaret Thatcher generation of kids who have lost the concept of unselfish effort for the occasional benefit of others?.
  13. Teamsteevo Thanks for that. After reading your post I shot round and borrowed my mates '03 mont rear wheel again and of course your dead right. Sprocket and disc lined up perfectly but the wheel was nearly
  14. What exactly is it that the moaners are moaning about?. Does OTF really believe that if the tooth fairy deposited Mick Grants cub or Neil Gaunts enfield or Vestys Bultaco in his shed that he'd be the one standing on the top of the podium at the SSDTpre65 or Sammy Series?. And if he was, so what?. Whats happened to the concept of going to a trial on a Sunday with a few mates just enjoying yourself riding your bike. Unfortunately it seems that every level of trials, from CtoC up to WTC has fallen victim to what is generally described as "cheating", whether this is blatant at CtoC events where riders mark their own cards or apparent national favouritism by observers at WTC level, and it could well be argued that these practices have devalued the awards given. There are still some principled guys around and I know several ex-competitors who no longer compete in organised events for these reasons but still get terrific enjoyment riding in trials they lay out with a few mates on friendly farmers land, and this really is the simple solution to OTFs problem as well - if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen or take up flower arranging. Unfortunately the concept of everyone a winner now starts in infant school with all the sad little gits trooping out of prizegiving wearing badges saying "I did my best" just so they won't feel left out. LIFE AIN'T FAIR SO GET USED TO IT!. A B40 seems to be the ideal bike for OTF. As far as I remember it has the engine slightly offset in the frame. With the huge chip OTF has on his shoulder this should give perfect balance.
  15. Thanks for the input Baldilocks, but this is the way this thread always seems to go, off topic!. I know that a 1998 Montesa rear wheel will fit a 1999 Sherco and vice versa but the caliper layout changed since then. The question here is, can a Montesa rear wheel of any year be modified to fit a 2003 Sherco 290?. Alternatively can a Montesa rim of any year be spoked to a 2003 type sherco hub?. On November 21st 2005, Ishy posted:- "Just to keep you thinking, I have used the Mont back wheel on all my Shercos since "03, I keep the Mont spacers in the wheel so the disc is centered other than that it bolts right in. It"s on my 320 at the mo". Well, a mates 2003 Mont rear isn"t a straight swap with the Sherco in my shed!. What"s the secret Ishy?.
  16. Hi, I know there has been discussion about this before (and even earlier on T.A.) but I have searched the forum and can't find the definitive answer. Is there a Montesa rear wheel which is a direct swap into a 2003 Sherco 290 ?. I suspect not, due to the change to inboard caliper although Ishy seemed to have done it?. If not, what are the pros and cons of machining a Montesa wheel to suit?. Or using a Montesa rim on a Sherco hub?. The 2003 Montesa rear wheel would fit with the correct spacers but it seems either the disc or sprocket would have to be moved slightly, and the rim offset also doesn't look right. Any ideas?. I've had enough of leaking spokes on the Sherco wheel and whatever anyone says if a bike is being regularily used on rocks it's an ongoing problem.
  17. From an observers point of view Maun ones are by far the best, the Rapesco handles are too close together to be able to squeeze properly and they give your palm a very painful time.

    Sherco Rad

Mine was leaking at several of the vertical tubes where they enter the bottom tank bit, god knows how they got in to braze it. You shouldn't suffer from corrosion if you've used proper coolant. The rads are pressure tested after repair so presumably any weak bit would blow out.

Watkins Radiators , Gloucester, 01452 527135. Excellent job at reasonable cost compared to new one. Had mine repaired last November still perfect. Do a search on "sherco radiator" in the forums and go back to last november for more info.

    325 Or 340?

Woody, would you care to comment on post no 3?. There seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether the Comerfords modified bikes had oval or rectangular section swinging arms.

    325 Or 340?

Thanks for that. I've seen a young chap in a few t/s trials sometimes on a 340 but mostly on a 325 'cos he finds the sharper 325 power delivery suits his style better. His 340 has the top mountings for the rear shocks mounted forward from standard and using M10 or 12 bolts screwing into bosses, special swinging arm mounting plates which put the pivot almost touching the back of the gearbox and a beautifully welded oval section swinging arm. He says it gets far more grip than the standard 325 frame and that his dad has something somewhere about the mods being done by the guy who welded the Beamish Suzuki or Whitehawk frames. Any info on this one?. PS. I think he said the welding was done by Mike Whitlock?.

    325 Or 340?

Can some of the experts give an opinion on the difference in power delivery of the 199A (325) and 199B (340) sherpas?. I've been told that the 325 is a bit sharper but surely a couple of cc,s doesn't make all that much difference?.
