Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Started by old trials fanatic,

Anybody going? Is it worth the long drive? How much is it to get in or is it free like a normal trial for spectators? Never been before but thought it might be an interesting day out and thought i might camp overnight if it was worth it. Let me know your experiences guys

Having recently fitted a new 22mm Amal concentric carb to my cub, to try to cure low rev stalling in sections I am still having problems curing a flat spot which happens if i snap open the throttle from idle. i called Surrey Cycles for advice they suggested fitting a brass slide with a bigger cutaway which i fitted today. i took the Cub for a run on road to warm it up and then tried to trickle along at idle occasionally bliping the trottle to lighten the front flat spot is still there - again only if the throttle is snapped open, if the throttle is opened slower it revs cleanly all the way through the range. Do you think this may be an ignition problem, I am using a Boye…

After a second look at the Yorks classic trials website covering the Pre 65 Scottish pics (I really appreciate this photo coverage service being down under) On one pic I noticed the Big John Matchless has a modified primary cover which would indicate the shock absorber spring is removed / changes to the chain drive, the result being a slimmer / reliable good primary gearing and a neat primary drive. I have not noticed this mod previously and am interested in what constitutes the primary drive which looks like a major improvement as well as reducing engine width. Although I have never owned a trials Matchless during the classic period, I have always maintained a great…

  4. Anybody seen the results from the Midland Classic Trial at Rhodesia at the weekend? Even went and bought Trials & Motocross News this week but theres nothing in there. Want me money back Not that i've got any delusions cos i know i'm crap but would be nice to know how crap So anybody seen the results?

  5. Now i've done 2 trials on the B40 and slowly fettleing it as each outing brings up a list of things i want improveing / changing. The bikes a Faber framed, old model frame, B40 with Betor forks and OSSA type yokes. The "problem" i'm trying to get me head around at the moment is on steep downhill sections or on sheer drops it has a tendancy to "tuck under". I had a Fantic 240 Pro years ago that was the same. Now i was thinking of swaping the fork yokes for something with less offset, mine are 65mm, but at full compression on the forks there is only 12mm clearence between the front mudguard and the front downtube so not really worth it. I dont want to cut and reweld th…

Hi. As some of you know i have started back riding again and i was looking forward to my second trial on Sunday at the Midland Classic Club event at "Rhodesia". Problem is as i am "new" at this i dont know where "Rhodesia" is so if anybody could give me directions from Derby i would be most grateful. I think it's somewhere near Worksop. Sorry to ask but i know some of the riders that go to the Midland classic events look in on here from time to time. Thanks.

Query for you knowlegable people. Is there meant to be a slipper pad on the B40 duplex chain tensioner. Mine seems to run on the metal adjuster bracket !! It is also badly grooved, where the chain has been running. Is their supposed to be a pad of sorts ?

  10. I'm currently putting together a Villiers 32a engine to go in the James frame, when it eventually arrives , and i've got to sort out the ignition. Now i've got a PVL on the B40 and am most impressed but i dont know what is the best system to fit on the Villiers engine so was wondering if anybody had any experience of them. As usual heard different stories about the systems on offer so which is the best? I cant afford to buy a system only to find that it's not up to scratch or unreliable. Oh yes dont know if it matters but i've got an Alpha full circle crank with a std Villiers taper fitted. Havent got a flywheel yet as i thought it might depend on the type of igniti…

Hi from Spain: I own this Pre-65 bike with a Villiers engine. Some days ago the piston blocked because it was overheated (a hot spanish day). When te engine cooled down a little it started again with no problems. Now sometimes the piston blocks for an instant. The piston looks ok, as well as the inside of the cylinder and the rings. Is there anibody that knows why and how can I stop this??? Thanks in advance.

Ok, the Otter/C15 is almost complete to the point where I can start riding it. One thing I need to do is replace the cheap NJB shocks that I've been using as 'place holders' for something a little better - I'm thinking a pair of Betors or similar. Does anyone have anything suitable knocking about? or can anybody offer any suggestions/advice as to where I can get something reasonably competative for a sensible price? Cheers UB

Hi - I'm new to the forum and new to the pre '65 movement. Saw the demo at the Historic motor sport show and it re-awakened old urges. I've acquired an unmolested '59 Francis barnett Trials 83, which needs new tyres. I can't find a 19" trials tyre anywhere. Millers advised me to build a new wheel with an 18" rim. Is this the only way? Any help would be appreciated

Artie Ratcliffe filming for 'C.H Wood' of Bradford, the footage was used on the 'Six from the Scottish Duke video' riding up The Devils Staircase. It was also used to make a promotional film for CASTROL oils. Incidentally this was the same bike he won the Scott Trial on in 1957,and secured 3rd place in the SSDT in 1958.

Just a thought but how alike or far apart might be the Ariel replicas similar to the one that recently won in Scotland from GOV 132 which I presume was state of the art at the time when Sammy Miller rode it.
