Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Started by magicjuan,

Hi Looking for some links or advice on where to get parts / services etc for restoring my old man's BSA. It was parked in this spot back in '66 and hasn't moved since. Although i've been around and raced bikes since i was 5, i've never had or ridden a trials bike let alone a 45 year old british one! I have to confess right now i've always been more interested in Motocross. However, the more i see his C15 sitting there at rest the more i'm compelled to restore it. I want to re-build this one just as it it is, the objective isn't to make it into some lightweight special, so no replacement forks with modern internals or cheater mods. Just looking to strip it, paint / …

Dumb questions of the day coming up: What's the benefit of the square head/barrel combination on Villiers motors, I come up with weight and better cooling, but is there anything else ? Seems every Villiers bike tested in magazines has a different head/barrel combination so there's many different types: Parkinson, Alpha etc. So what works best for trials motors and why ? I remember that the 210 Karting lads used the round combo, not sure if they were alloy replicas. If anyone needed better cooling I thought it would be them. But looking at the various James bikes tested in: Trialsworld, Classic Dirtbike and YOU HAVE USED WORDS OR A PHRASE WHICH ARE NOT PERMITTED ON T…

Hi all, I was looking at the pictures of the swan neck cub frames fitted with strengthening top tubes that double up as the oil tank. Can the same ones be fitted to a b40/c15 ? If so where can i get one and what is the best way of fitting them or guess who fits them ? Also if you can fit a cub sub-frame to a BSA frame can you also fit an ARMAC one and maybe the swinging arm ?? Cheers Steve.

Hi all. I have just put a PVL ignition on my BSA B40 trialer care of mr Whitton and reduced the carb down to a 626 as I had got one to hand. It started first time and seemed to run a lot better straight away low down. It's still missing a bit at the top and that's not if I snap the throttle open. Going to check the tappets next and then put a new plug in. I have got some NGK BP6ES plugs so was going to run it on that. They are the extended nose ones. Thought I'd ask what the thoughts of other people were though. Cheers Steve.

Whats the best way to set the spring tension on a cub clutch? 199cc with serco alloy plate fitted. At the moment the clutch is very heavy , how far would you back the springs off before slip occours or is it just trial and error?

Help guys, what would you do with a genuine 'Comerfords cub', my dilemma is do I restore it back to former glory or do I go all modern using all the trick bits now available.I am fully aware that it is not competitive in its original trim but would it still be desirable as I don't think there are that many around any more.At the end of the day they are only a converted 'Mountain Cub' but as rough as they are they are still part of 'Triumphs' famous trialing history.

I'm restoring a 350 unit twin Triumph at the moment. It's a '58 3TA frame and '64 engine. On the rear of the engine case near to the frame is engraved (roughy with a dot punch) "HOLLOWAY". Presumably from a previous owner or whoever built it in the first place. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Cheers, Glenn.

Hi, I need to fit an engine kill switch to a 1960 Greeves with 250 villiers engine. The switch I have is a standard Yamaha TY replacement, with one back wire and one black/white lined wire. Can anyone tell me how easy this is to fit, I understand that one wire should be attached to the coil and one to an earth, but to be honest I'm not at all good with electrics and stay well clear of them usually! Any help would be appreciated Thanks

  15. Hi all, I am having trouble getting my c15 running right, i recently bought an Amal concentric fromm surrey cycles " 24mm with a 110 main jet" and it just wont run right, i was told it would be jetted for my bike, but after playing with it at the Blue Bar 2 day trial this week i had no joy! In the end i borrowed another amal from a friend and this was much much better, but it was a 22mm and had a 140 main jet. Please can some of you out there that a run C15 tell me exactly what works best.. or even if they have a carb that they will sell, it doesnt have to be an Amal, any make will do. thanks: Scrumpy

Is there any reason why this system cannot be shortend so that the silencer sits tucked away where the oil tank was sited. Does it affect running to shorten the manifold pipe? Also how do you get a lighter clutch? apart from the right cable/routing what other mod's are there to get a lighter action?
