Aircooled Monoshocks

  1. Started by taylo63,

Hi All Looking for some advise please...MY 1985 TY 250 Mono starts ok and would run ok, however, it keeps "hunting" and pinging once it gets hot...I have decoked the piston and exhaust, and even fitted a Mikuni carb to see if that makes any difference, but the same thing happens with the Mikuni as it does with the original Yam carb.. I've done all the other usual stuff like new plug and made sure both carbs are clean and using fresh fuel.. Does anyone have any ideas What I can try next?

Here I go again, trying to talk myself into or out of another motorcycle restoration. I've already started on the engine and I had been debating on keeping it as a "spare" but I have the frame it came out of.... So toying with the idea of jumping in on another one. Any words of encouragement or discouragement would be appreciated. I am missing the following parts: Fuel tank, seat, front wheel, front axel, and the brake light switch.

I have taken the engine out of my 87' Garelli 323 section today ready to do a freshen up its all original and has never been touched. I've taken the top end off and the piston is looking a bit ropey even though the bike ran fine!!! Anyone know where i can get a piston kit and engine gasket set for the Hiro engine????

I have just picked up a TY Mono which is going to be paired with a chair (new challenge for next year!) I am sorting a few bits out and noticed that the rear brake pedal flop's around due to excessive wear either on the shaft or the housing in the frame. The current pedal looks like it has been built up with braise. I can get a bush made up but first I want to source a replacement pedal. I can't find any UK suppliers stocking any on the net? Or do people buy other ones and modd them (if so what one??)

Decided to do an air cooled mono, after spotting a frame, tank and seat for an Armstrong at this years Telford Show. With only 80 ever made, it hasn't been the most straight forward renovation, but its getting close to completion. Everything mechanical has been done and its all running and riding.....however 2 parts have eluded the search. Its missing the airbox and sump shield. I have resigned myself to the fact that both will need to be made from scratch, unless anyone out there has anything they want to sell ? If there was anyone with a complete Armstrong/Can Am mono that would be kind enough to take their bash plate off and draw round it for a pattern, I …

I did a bit of trials in the 80's on 70's twinshocks as they were all I could afford at the time and I've not ridden trials since but have done plenty of green laning and the odd enduro. I realise that a very modern bike would probably be the best bet for ease of use but I have no desire to own one.......I just like aircooled traditional looking bikes so will stick with twinshock or aircooled mono class. Would I notice much of a difference between riding an aircooled mono and a 70's/80's twinshock if both bikes were well maintained and sorted? Will I make it easier on myself with a 90's mono bike or is the overall technology between the 80's & 90's bikes not that m…

Hi have nearly finished my TY mono rebuild . I've found a few problems on the way & would like to discuss them. My bike has a YZ 250 front brake plate fitted & iv'e had to machine a extended torque lug for the fork leg/ brake plate, anyone else had to do this? I also found that the carb had had a few DIY mods on it that didn't work very well.Corrected this by adjusting the float height to 23mm with the float tang just seating in the float valve slot, next fitted 42 pilot jet, highly vented air box lid, 145 main jet & needle back in the std position , air screw 1, 1/2 turns out. Bike now starts easily & runs like a top. Plastic petrol tanks don't fit very we…
