Montesa

I changed the fork seals on my 98 315r (Paoli forks) last weekend but they started leaking again almost straight away. I can't see any scratches or damage to the stanchions, I put 360ml of 5w oil in each leg and the seals were fitted the same way round as the old ones with the spring part facing up. Is this right or were the old seals in the wrong way as they didnt look too worn out? Failing that is there any other reason why they may leak even with new seals. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, i have been attempting to do my fork seals on my 315r (99) today. I have got to the point where the new seals are in. Now when i try to put the forks back together i am struggling. When i try to put the forks back together there is like a split washer (dont know the exact name for it) but it wont stay in place. It says in the manual that there is a sepcial tool required as the washer keeps sliking up the forks when it should say in place. has any one got any ideas of what too you use to do this?? hope you understand as my explanation is probabily not the best, cheers matt

My brother decided to replace the fork seals on his 2001 315r, and seems to be stuck. Does anybody have a rough idea how much it will cost to have them done - seals, oil, etc. Can anybody recommend a place to have this done....Im thinking Sandifords, but any help appreciated. Forgot to mention, he's on a tight budget after being made redundant.

A couple of years ago, probably 5 or so actually, there was an article on 4 stroke 315r that some guy had developed using the two stroke box (i think) and his own barrel obviously. I seem to remember that he had converted the water pump to the oil pump and then had a water pump which ran off the camshaft, i may be wrong though. I did have it saved on my old computer but i dont have it anymore. Does any one have a link for this article as i found it interesting and just fancied reading it again! Thanks

Have had several Montesa's over the years,last one was a 2003.I Packed up riding 3 years ago and have now had the urge again and got a 1999 Mont.Problem is can't get the front brake to really bite,have bled it,put new pads in cleaned the disk with brake cleaner but still not biting it will slow you down if you know what I mean but no real stopping power. Did have this prob with a 2000 model and had to heat disk up by applying brake whilst riding then quench with water!!!!!It would last for a couple of sections then have to repeat.Don't really want that hassle again but otherwise really like the bikes.Any advice would be welcome. Hi i have a 315r, the front brake is very poor i have checked the fluid levels changed the pads and made sure both pistons move, one pistons seems stronger than the other but both move. The lever feels like it should when squeezed except you can still can push the bike forward and move the wheel slightly. Does any one have any ideas.

Just a note regarding front pads. I inherited my bike with Galfer pads and was never very happy with the bite of them - they worked up to a point but the brake never really seemed powerful enough. To be fair to them they may have been contaminated with something prior to me getting the bike. Whatever, doing a bit of research on here I followed some advice from The Addict, I think, and got myself some Braking sintered pads from BVM and they really have transformed the front. Plenty of bite and feel and even with the single pot caliper I've always got plenty of brakes - I'd recommend them if anyone feels the need for new pads.

I've got a question, I've just got my first Montesa - a 1998 315r and obviously the last rider was a 2 stone midget - So when I placed my rather ample 17 stone on her she collapsed to the floor in shock. The rear end suspension is simple enough to adjust pre-load and rebound etc.. But the front end is a whole new kettle of fish? Is the pre-load only set on one fork leg and the rebound set on the other? Excuse my ignorance but shouldn't this be set on both equally? Can anyone give a rough estimate as to what is the correct setup - at the moment the front is very soft, if there is 5" of movement then with me on her there is only 2" left I understand they would drop a…

Hello everyone, first thank you for all of your knowledge regarding this bike. I'm new to the sport (although I've been riding motorcycles for 28 years) and reading your posts have help greatly. I'm alittle on the large side ( 6'6" 275 lbs) and I'm putting the bigger TSP spring on the rear shock. However, dispite the fact that I hear great things about the Showa front fork, I would think that I would have to beef up the front forks to? (to keep the sag adjustment correct) I know that a plush suspension is what is desired. I also know that a heavier fork oil can help. Hi Does anyone have any tips on sealing the exhaust Front Pipe to the silencer (middle box) on a Mont 315r, cant seem to get at the back to create a good seal. cheers, Mal

Ive tried a few gear oils now over the last 3 months 4 to be exact, motal putoline light gear castrol and atf my conclusion is the ATF was by far the best for a few reasons : Clutch warm-up takes less time i no longer have to wait and hold the cluch in for the plates to release on 'cold' gear engagement. :Noticably less clutch noise while feathering under load. :cost. Has anyone tried anything similar and found different results?

Gearbox oil leak - I'm struggling to identify the source of a small leak. There is some oil on the bash plate. I reckon it had only lost about 100ml when I measured the drained oil at oil change. Could be leaking from the clutch cover, engine cover or the join between the cases (hope not!) Is there a common leak on the 315 ? Handlebars - The bars my bike came with are narrow compared with most at 28 1/2". I'm tempted to change them for something of a more standard size. Any recommendations for an average size rider (5'9") to fit the 315 ? Foot rests - sagging a little and the teeth are worn and blunt. I could fix them, but again, am tempted to change them for something…

I intend to use my 315 for trail riding. Does anyone have any experience of what gearing to use to give 50-60 mph on the road. Your expert help would be apprieciated.

is it possible to raise the bar's by say 2" i'm finding that i am stooping a little too much for my liking. can you get the renthals in different heights? worked that out for myself! next question is the clutch seems to be dragging a bit is it easy to adjust?

does anyone now what standard gearing for 2004 315r is

My understanding is that the 315r motor started life as a CR250. Just what is still CR250? Pistons? Rings? Crank? Also, several people recommend swapping CR250 clutch plates with the stock ones for less sticking - is it possible that they are the same? I don't actually need to do anything to my motor yet. My clutch does stick a little bit, but I don't think I'm losing points because of it. I would like to know what parts I can buy from my Honda dealer when I do need them. Thanks, Sam

Hello new boy here (and to trials) and am looking at buying one of two apparently 2001 models. However, one has a black (above the swing arm) rear brake caliper and the other appears to be in line behind the swing arm. Could anyone suggest which might be the later of the two models and I'm assuming the preferred bike, given the condition and price are very similar? Hey anyone of you 315r owners out there have any jetting tips for my soon to be mine 2004 315r? My normal riding is about 2,000'-4000' ft above sea level.Any tips would be great.i believe it has stock jetting which is for around sea level,but could be wrong?Thanks in advance.
