  1. OK,couple other things to check, Some boy's say to remove the cap on the plug wire and wack off a 1/4-1/2 inch of plug wire. The popping out the exghast though,,suggest lean mixture. Does the coolant level ever change?? Timing spot on?? Silencer need re-paking? Faulty kill switch? My Beta loves Bel-Ray HR at 70.1 with 93 octane.
  2. Wow!! This post is hilairious,,,Someone buy's an abused non mantienced bike and complains about having to replace parts?? so Beta's are junk Someone post about giving up on removing an air box because of not having the knowings?? so Beta's are junk Italians p****d me off, so Beta's are junk I've been re'building bikes for 3 decades and will say;I have never owned and worked on a better bike than a Beta! I love them to death, and will remain with Beta. Thought (briefly) about Scorpa,,but when I can call Ron Como and get my part's shipped/recieved in a few day's ,,,,well that's just hunky dorry.
  3. 1st off, Plug gap is 0.5-0.6mm champion N7YCC (recomended) Main jet (is)150 Move the clip back to center, that's NOT the problem. More likely a dirty carb or air filter or maybe even resticted exghast. Pull the carb, unscrew the pilot, and remove the float. Give'r a good spray of carb cleaner every where and blast out every oriface with compressed air. Reassemble checking for proper float level. Turn in pilot screw to (litely)seat then back out 1/2 -1 turn. Make sure the choke plunger is free and not sticky. Hopefully this helps a little.
  4. I'll suggest a late 90's Techno,I started on a 86 TY 250 and was hooked. When it came time to move up I tryed a Monty and loved it til I rode my Brother's 99 Techno, somthing about just felt right. I ended up getting a screaming deal on a very well mantained near mint 97 Techno. A buddy of mine has a 99 Gasser, though it runs great it's alway's needing,, What ever you decide on take a day and tear it down and clean and grease every pivot and berring and change "all" fluids no matter what.
  5. 46 and think like a 16yr.old ,,,feel like a 80yr.old. Glad to hear I'm not the only one that has to down advil and sample a few beverages before and after a ride. If I wasn't such a puter dork,I'd post a few pics of what happens to a Beta after 7-8 Beck's Dark, and over-confident beginner, attempting to hop a rotten mushy 3ft.tall stump.
  6. Chad; I've never ridin the scorpa yet but IMO go with the Beta 250 for starters, you can alway's upgrade later. The 250 Has NO problems pulling 4th gear wheelies,,I have NO problems on my Techno, with a little blip and clutch slip pulling her up in 5th (too fast for me though)plus plenty of poop for the hills. From what little I know, you can put a 270 kit on a 250.
  7. Yeah Thanks,I was a little excited and had a few becks in me when I posted. Yes, you'd think since the place was packed during the world round there'd be an abundance of riders in the area,,such is not the case. Even staring at the vintage twin shockers (never knew Can-Am made a trials)parked here an there one would think there has to riders around,,unless they go into hibrenation. Still wonder if World Round's ever coming back. Changing the subject a tad, Now this is getting annoying, Trying to find place's to ride,(understand, I don't have the funds to travel all over) is very limited and only getting worse. In my area, unless you know someone or own alot of property your F'd. You have to pack-up and go to an OHV park and pay pay pay. The few of them within a 100mi. are having more and more restrictions and are dominated by the Quadders! Oh how I hate those distructive things. Didn't mean to turn this into a rant, but I often think,,,no, I know I was born on the wrong continent. Growing up in the 70's,, riding the pit's on TM Suzuki's and Honda Elsie's,,on rare occasions two brothers would show up on these Bultaco Alpina's and blow all of us younglings away on hillclimbing. I would alway's stop and watch in amazement,,(what are those things?) Now Many years later I wish ta hell I would have dropped my interest in Moto and went Trials! I somtime's feel like a drug pusher trying to get some of my old moldy Mx'r buddy's to try it, but the narrowmindedness kick's in. I tell them,"It takes NO brains to twist the throttle"! All I hear is ,where's the seat?or, is that a girls bike?,,,,,hmmmmnnnnnn,,ok,,yeah It's purple and I prefer to putt putt but when I dump I get a bruise and a scratch on my bike, not a broken bone and a twisted subframe. (ranting again?) Yep,I'm on the wrong continent,or the wrong state. You boy's over in the UK have no idea how lucky you are. I often wonder what it would be like,,being able to just ride out your back yard into heaven.
  8. I don't belong to a club or compete, just ride for fun,but try finding someone to ride with! huh?? Not in northern Mn. Met a guy last yr. for a few ride's but his Gasser's been sitting in my shed since May 28th,,that's right, almost a yr. Been beginning to think I'm the "only" trials guy in the Duluth area.I've put ads in the paper and flyers up at stores trying to get people involved,,not one phone call. I belong to a big snowmobile club and this winter we had our annual group ride up in Isabella/Finland after the ride we owned the pub,I asked the owner if I could flip in a dvd on the 60inch big screen, yeah baby,,,I brought in 04 world round,BA3 and 4,and Out of section. The place went quiet in amazement. It was great having sledhead throttle jockey's interested, the question's where overwehlming. So anyway that's about it for me,watch the vids over an over, and go out and practice around the yard a bit, till last night. Out of the blue the guy that owns the Gasser called and asked if I'd be interested in helping Mr.Ahlors set up sections at Spirit Mountain for the up-coming event on June 30th-july 1st,,,,,,,,,,,,I reply'd; I'd be honerd to help! I'm still in ahhh,no big deal to some I spose, but I know no one that trials besides me and my older Brother. Maybe now I'll get a chance to meet some riders and even join UMTA.
  9. I just park my Beta uphill,,no leaky leaky.
  10. I have alot of info for you,all the specs and such,,Bit I'll be damned if i can't find it right now!I suspect it's hibernating in the Shed with my (97) I'm in Northern Minnesota and it's about -12 degrees right now so bare with me. Brrrrrrrrr, that was nasty cold,, 360cc each tube,I recommend bel-ray hi performance 5w or 15w My Paoli's like it. Thermostat (sending unit) part#29 11960 I also recommend checking the water pump impeller and seal, they tend to wear on the shaft and get loose.
  11. Being a newbie myself and trying out manuvers that require more experiance, often finding myself off the Techno laying on the ground wondering what I snapped off this time, however I've learned to loosen the lever perches a tad, thus when you go down it'll move rather than snap.
  12. You say a "grand"?I hope you mean more than a US grand, anyway "Condition" is the keyword in my opinion.Recently in my quest for a bike it came down to a toss up between a 2000 Rev3 and a 97 Techno for the same price and only a 40 mile differance,The Rev was ok but when I could lift the rear of the bike up a few inches and the rear tire was still on the ground kinda told me how the bike was maintained and taken care of. The Techno won my heart in apperance, and overall condition, plus the fact that when I entered the sellers garage and saw the completed resorations and his collection, say's his love and passion for bikes is unreal. The other thing that strayed me off the 2000 was "IT" being the first year of the BIG change,Now I'm not slamming the 2000 it's just that the only good reviews of the Rev's that "I" have heard are from 02 on up. I just came off a 85TYmono to a 97 Techno,,quite a differance,The Beta seems about 20lb's heavier and not as torquey as the old TY yet the Beta's alot peppier and actually STOPS! I feel that at my skill level (none) training on a bit heavier bike will pay off. A Rev3 is definatly my next.
  13. Ahhh,Ken;You shoulda known to ask "me" what a Pinky is, anyway's, Yes a Yamaha TY
  14. That's a tough call,I love'em both and own neither.I'm sure the best way to decide is to test ride if possible and choose whichever feels the best between your legs, that apply's to some of life's other choice's too! I'll bet that was helpful,,Hell, just buy one of each and whichever one you don't care for you can send to me. I'll even pay for shipping Welcome to the site!
  15. PRINCE POSTERS!,,why aye attaa!! That gives me an idea for some photoshop pics,,hmmmmn Prince riding a "beautiful" 97 Purple Techno,,,I hear purple rain! goffracing; There is a varity of paints that'll work with proper prep,,but why???the purple really set's off the aluminum in my opinion.
  16. Alan;I have been following the "discussion" and am not in any means defending either side. I don't mean to speak for Ken but, we are trying to learn and have a long way to go!I just feel that it would be (more) informative for others and myself that join an open forum to discuss, not argue, anyway's no biggy I'll shut up,and focus on learning more.1 more thing,I would LOVE nothing more than to meet as many as possible, but Tennesee is a bit out of the budget this year, that's the only thing about Trials, every event is so damn far away!
  17. Politics I know I'm new but come on,,yeah if you don't like whats posted on a thread, don't reply. I'm trying to learn, but you 2 and a few others seem to turn a interesting discussion into a heated debate or p***ing match! This is the "MOST" physically and Mental demanding sport in my opinion. Please! Please!try to practice the Mental part a bit for the rest of us newbees.I have nothing but respect and a great deal of admeration for youz, and envy!!!It's my understanding we are a differant breed. Can't we "ALL" just get along??
  18. Not mandatory to attend,I like to study differant riders technique through out skill level.Being a old fart an "very" new to the sport myself, watching others and training vids helps me find a happy medium in my training.I don't know what level your at,but if your just begining,In my opinion you (have)to balance 1st!it's not gonna happen over nite,it took me a few day's,,engine off, leaning against a tree for hr's getting frusrated then it just comes and feels natural, then starting and stopping in gear with engine running.Once you've feel confident you can balance then move on to a little hopping.Good Luck!
  19. Check out some training dvd's (Ryan Young)+others and hit up a few events if possible,,Balance First!
  20. It isn't Lane?? j/k ,my 14yr.old step daughter say's; aaah,I donno,,Raga? my 6yr.old say's Raga, my 5yr.old son NAILED IT!!he said; Daddy is! As to bike influence,,I have no favorite, they're "all" good,(IMO) Now someone mention MX and Brad Lacky??My God Man,I thought I was old. RODGER DECOSTER!!!He's the Champ forever!
  21. WELL WELL WELL!Thank you to all my Brothers and Reply's. It just so happens that Heaven was only 3hr.s away! A fellow UMTA member contacted me this weekend with a 97 Techno he'd sell me for $1900,low hr.s and no damage, went down to check it out with my Brother. This bike is in pristine condition and needless to say is now in my possesion, complete with all documentation.Other than needing a rear set a brake pads and a new air filter,I can find absolutly nothing wrong!Starts 1st kick cold, and 1/2 kick warm. Joe A.;If you see this,Thank you very much!Nice bike,Good deal,I'm very satisfied! I could go on and on but I have Beta things to do!
  22. Once again; Thanks a ton! Very informative. I'm looking for a bike, and have come across a few 95's here and there in the $1500 range, seems to be the norm.
  23. Still "NO" luck! There's gotta be someone in Mn.or Wis.with a (resonable)priced bike for sale.I have had a few response's,but I clearly state UNDER $2000 bucks, can't see what makes a 96 Techno worth $2600,??? unless, it was mine!
  24. A lathe aye',,,,,time to make some "real"swingarm bushings for the old IT, ridgrnr; Hell,,what can I say,Thanks! so,,then the 95's sucked?
  25. Yes that's me on the ole'TY,My Bro like's to play with photoshop and cropped Gollem over me.
