That was classic Ish.
My 10yo was wandering around the house the other day making cellphone ringtone noises. Eventually his brother tells gim to go to silent mode. So the 10yo waked around going bzzzzt bzzzt..

Very sad news. A great blow for Scottish motorsport in particular and motorsport in general. All the worst having lost Steve Hislop in the same way.

....and are you government employed....doing covert design work do you introduce yourself as Tim, Too Fast Tim and do you prefer your vodka martini stirred or shaken....... .......
I could tell you but......
Presently working for a company that manufactures teslameters (guess what they measure). High energy physics institutes (for those that don't know) use magnets, big magnets and lots of them. Also working on instrumentation for ITER (http//www.iter.org). Will be visiting JET (http://www.jet.efda.org/) in 10 days time as well as some of those institutes listed above.
Donald, for somebody who plays Tetris on a Cray this is a bit rich I'll bet that you have one of the few Crays in the UK, you and GCHQ!

That was the original idea of the ISDT (now ISDE) but it evolved into a time trial as opposed to an observation trial.
Why didn't it work as an observation trial then ?
I don't think it was a case of not working as an observation trial, it just evolved into a time trial. To understand you really have to look at the roots of trials and enduros. Trials & enduros both evolved from the Scott trial (so did mx but that's another story). Whereas trials has always been recognized as a discipline in the UK this wasn't always the case on the continent. Indeed it's only since about 1965 that trials has been recognized on the continent as a discipline. Before that the concept of an observed trials was foreign to most of Europe so, because the ISDT was an international event the demand or requirement for observation died away and time (and *ahem* reliability) became the criterea.
An similar example (although not continental) would be the Welsh 2/3 (can't remember how many days it is now) enduro. It started as the Welsh 3 day trial and an alternative to the Scottish but has evolved into an enduro.

Not a physicist though. I design electronics for said institutes.

Thanks Martin, you put me out of my misery. I thought it might be GCHQ.
No, my professional interest is: http://www.esrf.eu/ (45

Just been having a sniff around on Google Earth and I found a annulus shaped building co-ords: 51

Yeah I'd figured that trials is a bit far left of centre for many "national personalties" The US and South Africa to name two. I still don't know about NZ but it's probably considered a little less eccentric here than it would be in the US or SA. However, the US seems to have adopted golf which is IMO as eccentric as trials. Go figure.

I'm on my third pair in less than a year. PeterB is making a small fortune from me

Rumor has it that Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull was going to sing two songs at his service: "Fat Man" & "Heavy Horses".

They have tried it in the past. Whether it's worth doing again is the question.
KTM trials bike
-
Sure, but I think KTM's sales in MX & enduros is being pushed by their success in those sports. Sort of a self sustaining thing. What wins on Sunday sells on Monday (we should all remember that when thinking about the Xispa). The involvement in the GP's is to push brand awareness. KTM's commitment to the Dakar is to promote the big traillies.
-
Dont see why not, there throwing enough money in 125 and 250 GP's for no real return, sucess on the race track cant be helping sell touring bikes or trail bikes can it?
There's a heck of a difference between trials and GP's. GP's are broadcast live, in prime sports time (on sports channels) in Europe. Trials are not. Imagine the coverage they're receiving.
-
I don't think they will. KTM have committed themselves to manufacturing large trailies and tourers to compete with BMW (a friend used to be a KTM agent and this was told to him at a dealers convention). So it really isn't in KTM's interest to persue a niche market like trials. MX & enduros they will continue to support because, presently, they are it's bread & butter.

As a member of the generation that built plastic aeroplanes before we started trials I'm saddened to hear that Airfix have just gone tits-up. RIP Airfix.

Hey ya Charlie?
Still fixing injuns?

You sah, are a scholar and a gentleman. Thanks VC.

Some time ago a topic (in this forum I think) ended up discussing the last of the real Spanish bikes (before Gas Gas & Sherco) and somebody posted some pics of the last, watercooled, monoshock, Cappra. Can anybody find it 'cause I've tried or alternatively would the person who posted said pics please repost.
Thanks

This penguin's driving through the desert. It's really hot and he's suffering. Suddenly the car develops an odd misfire. He nurses the car to the nearest town and service station. He explains the problem to the mechanic who tells him to come back in an hour.
We walks (waddles?) down the road to the nearest 7-11. When inside he spies the ice-cream fridge into which he throws himself with abandon and gorges himself with ice-cream. Eventually, his face covered in ice cream he returns to the service station. The mechanic looks at him and says "looks like you've blown a seal". Defensively he replies "no!".

Hmm. I once made the mistake of using lawnmower 2S (it was all they had) in my enduro bike. After 10 minutes I packed up and went home because it was pinking so much. Moral of story: buy good quality 2S oil.
