So whats going on ? Which show do we go to or do we do both ? Sorry if it old news and been over before, but I just got my latest Classic Dirt Bike mag.I knew that Mr Wright was moving the show from Malvern, but the new one at Malvern was a suprise.
-
Recently done the same job on my sons TY80,costs a few quid to do it properly ! I have run it on 50-1 from start up with Castrol TTS and it runs beautifully - everyone has commented on how well it runs/sounds.(Bloody well ought to for the time/money and effort I put into it.)
-
As long as there is an appropriate class for everyone to ride in I cant see a problem, whatever class you ride in cleaning sections is all you are after - even if you are riding against others or your own mind.Having a decent bit of land and some well laid out sections will bring in the riders, lots of arguing and moaning just puts people off.I rode today for the first time in months in the Bath classic trial - there were allsorts there, but everyone appeared to have a good time.
Surely thats all we are after ?

Hi Copemech, good luck with your Serrow - you may have seen the thread I started earlier this summer.I had a complete but stripped TY175 and gained a Serrow as a bad debt,I'd been looking for a Serrow motor for ages to build a twinshock 4 strock with electric start.(My right knee is not the best.)
Having not had much success with the TLR250 and RTL250's I had back when they were new,Ithought it was time to try something different.I've always got on well with Ty250's - both TS and mono, and the Serrow engine seemed like an ideal choice - esp with the electric boot. However the engine is alot taller than the 175 engine and I've had to chop alot of the frame and remake it.Its nearly done now,(in terms of fitting the engine to the frame anyway.) just the top tube to rebuild around that large CV carb. Then there's a complete alloy tank, battery and airbox to make.I think it will make a nice bike when its done, just lack of time holding me up.I have wondered though if it would have been quicker to build a frame from scratch.
Good luck,cheers Jon.

There are a few around and I dont normally make a fuss about things, but I think its well out of order. There are plenty of twinshock TY250's around for very reasonable money, and are excellent as a standard bike. The people who ride the converted bikes are only kidding themselves and annoying everyone else - its just not in the spirit of things.
-
Excellent spoof, but what was even better was watching the real man at Goodwood yesterday - he put on a really good show, had the crowd going and was a great laugh too.Lots of people who know nothing about trials got a world class introduction, fantastic event - recommend it to anyone who is a petrolhead.
-
Ta for the ideas, had a look again this morning and I reckon the best thing is to cut about 1/2 of the top tube out and weld a pair of tubes back on letting the original CV carb sit in between. Most of the bottom of the tank will need chopping out to accomodate the cyl head so I'll just need to chop a bit more out. I reckon it will be easier to do the frame than fiddle with carbs. When I got the Serrow it had been sat for at least 2 years, but a sniff of fresh fuel and it ran absolutely spot on,even making it run down so low it was lurching you could open the throttle and it would just pick up - ten times better than either the TLR or RTL that I had back in the 80's.NZralphy - I think you are right, not rambling ! So the CV carb will stay.
Sorry cant do pics at the moment,I'm in the throws of deciding what camera to buy - I'll get some on as soon as I can.

Finally,I have got round to staring a project I've been thinking about for ages.A long time ago I bought a totally stripped TY175 - because it was there. Then started looking around for an XT225 Serrow engine to go in it,couldnt find one.Last week I took one in to cover a bad debt.My idea is an alternative to a TLR,(which look nice but I could never ride them any sense)but with the added bonus of electric start.
Tonight I cut the frame around enough to get the XT motor in and started sussing out measurements for engine mounts etc.Its a bit of a squeeze but it will work, and so far looks like it will make a nice bike.Anyway reason for posting is that the biggest problem I can see so far is that the very large CV carb that the XT was fitted with is no way going to fit as the top of the carb is geeting on 3" in dia - much too big.Borrowed a carb off one of my TY250's and that will just about sit right with a new angled manifold.
So, anyone have any experience with going back to a conventional carb on a small 4 stroke that had the cv type carb.Going to have to make a petrol tank too,but I'm not worried about that, more so the carb as it ran so sweetly - none of the stutter/stopping issues that my TLR250 frustrated me so much with.
Cheers in advance,Jon.

Thanks for the advice,if I can get a pass out on Sunday I'll try to keep better hydrated,(water ! ) and keep focused on the section ahead.Maybe even spend a bit more time studying the section, planning alternative routes in the same section in case I dont quite end up at exactly the right spot I had in mind.Although I am lucky in having lots of practice area I dont feel it helps me as I tend to try what I think is challenging - not perhaps what a course marker would do.
Its interesting,(and funny) what peoples comments are and it has encouraged me to push harder - Thank you all.
-
Just do it ! They are great bikes, look out for all the usual things you would on a S/H bike, dont worry if it rattles a bit - they do that.Apart from a Fantic you cant really do much better as far as T/shocks go.I picked up an XT225 Serrow today,I'm going to put the engine in a TY175 frame I have.An electric start TY225,should make a change from the TLR mob !
But saying that its only for a change,I shall still keep the 3 TY250's.
Nice thing is you can get nearly all the bits for them and with Craig Mawlem making new Majesty frames and all the other bits they are not just fading away.

So is it the straight room and the dark jacket or does anyone have thoughts ? I really want to do better, not win all the time, just know that my results match what I know I am capable of.
-
Thanks for all the replies, esp Too fast Tim ! I proved the week before that 2 bottles of red and a late night are not a good combo for a trial the next morning.
Does anyone else get the feeling after cleaning a tricky section that it all "clicked" and some kind of magic brought it all together ? I sort of feel that I have some basic ability - not much, but some. And I know that basic fitness would be a help later in the trial, the dehydration I can see too - even tho I cruised back to the car for a drink twice.(and a Mars bar)
So the big question is - what can I do for the mental training ? (Besides the dark room and a straight jacket.)
-
Evening all,its been bothering me since Sunday that I did the first lap of a trial for 1 dab. That dab was a silly one,and I thought the next three laps I ought to clean it,(and hopefully the rest of the trial.) but stared to slowly lose marks 1/2 way through the second lap.I must of finished on about 12 or 15,still really enjoyed it and I started feeling tired during the last lap.I was in a good relaxed frame of mind,no booze and an early night before.Since I've started riding the A route I've started to take it all a bit more seriously, and Sunday's ride really made me think.I was able to do the sections but not for four laps,OK maybe if I was a bit fitter then the last lap would have been easier. What do I need to work on ? Is it fitness, concentration or was I just lucky in this trial ? BTW the trial was dry and the sections changed very little,if anything they got slightly easier.

Look a the size of the back sprocket on the Husky !
-
Glad its worked out well, that was what I was looking for - just a bit more upper zap.I'll have to find a quiet excuse to order one for mine, hopefully she wont notice the credit card bill !
-
Thats Ok then,I thought the postage was a bit strong but we will see if its packed in a gold plated box !
-
Thanks for all that,Bo - sorry bout that, has it stuffed you up on a rebuild ? I only bid on it as it completes my spare engine,(apart from a rebore/piston) If your stuck shout and I'll post it to you.Woody - thats exactly what I'm looking for in what you describe from your Ossa,be good to know how your 320 performs.Andy, good luck on Sunday - let us all know how it works.
Cheers Jon.

Sorry if this has been done before, just wondering if anyone has direct experience of fitting one of the kits to a Ty250 - the type with inbuilt advance.Reason I ask is that whilst I really like the low down grunt of my Ty,it is a bit flat higher up the rev range. It is in good nick a generally runs very well, except I wonder if the extra ignition advance would give a bit more top end zap.Or would the 270cc big bore be better ?

What I thought was very strong money was the

I hear what you say,but my idea is to use it,wear it out and rebuild it - the more spares you buy,the longer factories will keep making them.Stick it in a museum and its life is shortened.I order bits from Hirst's,BVM or my local Yam dealer as often as I can - I just wish I could encourage yamaha to start making pistons for twinshock Ty250's again.
-
Very nice, keep it as it is.
-
I was quietly looking around for a mono,I'm only 43 but I dont think I'll bother, the twinshocks are plenty good enough.I am interested in doing the Majesty mods though, any photo's or tips would be good.I am fortunate to have full workshop and fabrication facilities inc AC/DC Tig and Plasma etc,so it would be a good winter project. There is also my hankering of a rigid Pre65 to think of too,the Matchless my neighbour had turned out to be a 500 swinging arm but he also has a rigid all alloy B32 trials tucked away. That would be nice......
-
The clutch is stuck, but thats really not a problem - I have a spare bottom end complete so any parts I need wont cost anything. To be honest, for
-
Well, I'm very pleased - the bike was exactly as I hoped it would be. 3/4 hr of fiddling and it was running, been playing on it riding around with my son on his Ty80.Egine sounds good and pulls well, just the clutch to sort out and a good tidy up - my new practice bike !
