Just bought a TR77 thats got one fitted as std. Bloody awful thing stifeles the motor something rotten. Cant wait to take it off and fit a proper silencer that doesnt choke the motor. Do you have to have them over there ? sorry i'm a bit unaware of the law in the states.
-
Err yes but not for long. Did a Clarkson me and three wheels dont gel. Well unless it's an old 1275 Mini Cooper S oh fond memories of waving the inside rear wheel in the air on bends. We were all daft when we were young
-
Think you'll have to resort to the dreaded e bay as i dont think Renthal have made them for a long while. Sold my last pair on the bay for nearly the price of a new pair they are getting that rare. Whatever good luck
-
Bootiful bike. The primary cover is interresting. Micks has a std MAR one but the one in the photo looks very similar to the one on Cliff Richards Gripper. What is it off cos i know the Spanish regs say everything must be from the same period as the bike is deemed to be the year of the latest component. So what is the primary cover off? If you dont know then perhaps Greeves will be able to enlighten me. OOH i do love modified bikes

Thanks for all that Dave most informative. All i was trying to achieve was to get the 199B to steer like my Ossa and James which i have been able with very little effort to get to behave much alike, apart from the fact the Ossa feels so damn heavy which it is compared to the James although not so noticable when riding it, steering wise. That way when i swap from one to the other it only takes a section or so to recalibrate myself.
Oh well looks like the 199B will stay in the back of the shed for a while longer as i find it too hard to readjust from it to the James which i dont with the Ossa.
Am i the only person who has this problem ? sounds like it
-
Sounds more like what i would have guessed at will ask Mick myself and see what he comes up with then again Sam should know he helped build them.
-
I'm not swaping from a modern just from me Ossa and the James both of which feel "normal" just the 199B that feels like a barge. Perhaps thats why i never ride it ? Daft really i suppose cos loads of people do ride em and love em but it just dont feel "right" perhaps i'm just strange?
just thought i'd include that before everybody else chips in LOL
-
OOOOPS ! he started it sir. Never knew you rode sidecars Charlie. I only ever had one, that was more than enough, and that was on the road. Two girls were riding one at the last Dales Classic Trial. I still dont get it but good luck to them. Looks all a bit accident looking for somewhere to happen to me. Sidecar trials that is. Two wheels or four wheels me but never three and dont ever mention the Bond Bug incident
-
Just wondered cos i have a spare front end from an OSSA gripper languishing in the corner of the shed and one of the main things that puts me off riding the 199B is the orrible feel of the tiller steering so just wondered if anybody had tried non leading axle forks? Using the Ossa yokes as well would also get rid of the tiller effect which feels very strange.
Funny thing is in their day i dont seem to remember it bothering me but it does now.
-
From what i remember when i had one on the road it was accelerate round left handers and back off the throttle round right handers. Idea being the bike runs around the chair on left handers and the chair tries to overtake the bike on right handers. then again if you get it wrong on a left hander you end up with the combo flipping over but right handers and powersliders are fun. That is assuming the bike is mounted on the right of course. In sections it seems that the monkey holds onto the spokes on tight left handers stopping the chair wheel err thats inteligent not.
To be honest i never understood why anybody would want to go anywhere near one, same with trikes all the bad bits about a car coupled with all the bad bits about a bike with none of the good stuff so why bother?, but i am told they can grow on you. Then again so can verukas

Everybody seems to be. Just when i sold my spare bantam engine
-
4000 + the modified yam ones ???? now that really surprises me from what was basically in the big scale of things a cottage industry. WOW must remember to ask Mick how much "commission" he made from that little lot Does surprise me if thats true cos they are always regarded as quite rare.

LOL only if you let it. End of an era ? if you mean will we keep seeing the pre units riding in pre65 and twinshock events? probably less and less. Will we see them riding in events that cater for them i.e. Charlies then their future is assured.
As for getting younger riders on them well i dont know their names but i have seen a couple of young guys on Matchless etc hopping and flick turning them as if they were a twinshock at local events. God knows how they do it but it may not be "period" but it shows what can be done on one if you know how
-
Hi John great entry i'm sooooo envious. We do see the odd pre unit at local trials, yesterday i rode very badly at Dales Classic Smerril Grange Farm trial and there were i would guess 4 or 5, but sadly apart from some road trials in our area the level of riders expertise makes it very difficult to set out to accomodate the older big bikes without making it a walk in the park for the guys on unit construction bikes and twinshocks. I am sure there is still the interest and the bikes out there but i feel the future for them is perhaps in events and with clubs organised around old British Bikes to the exclusion of Twinshocks. Our club couldnt afford to do it as we are struggling as it is allowing almost any bike to compete but Midland Classic club locally along with Dales Classic do have a more big bike friendly policy and do have the access to land, which we dont, that allows them to do that. Good luck to them it's great to see the big older bikes get an airing.
-
Hi Charlie.
Glad the old girl is still going strong and in good hands
I think there's a faction on here who would choose Old Fanatic At Riding Trials
It's a poor show when you cant even make a constructive observation isnt it.
Hope the weather warms up for the weekend and to stay on topic hope the weather is kind for the Peak trial.
-
I was just offering a p.o.v. from the perspective of someone who has been riding in trials for the last 44 years. Think youre stretching things a bit to call it "undermineing" ? I was just trying to be constructive as the term "Clubman" is used to mean so many different levels of rider i just suggested it might be a source of confusion to riders who rode Clubman and then found the course much harder than they expected. Not saying the severity was too hard just not what they possibly expected. Whatever at least youve recognised i know best so you are on the way to recovery.

Every silver cloud has a grey lining i suppose strange how many wannabes you seem to bump into at a trial nowadays and how difficult it is to get away sometimes

The very welcome break in the autumnal weather was welcomed by the 29 riders who last Sunday took part in round 9 of the Peak Classic Trials Clubs Club Championship held at the ever popular venue of Carson

Because the dates meeting allocates dates in October of the preceeding year. I wasnt saying people shouldnt go to a show and stare at garage queens but i would personally prefer to ride my bike and without spending money which is very tight at the moment to ride in a Classic Trial every week as you suggest would cost more money on fuel alone than most people have to throw away. anyway didnt mean to hijack a thread. Sorry Brian i hope you got your C15 motor.
-
-
Good luck Brian hope you find what youre looking for. I'll be busy hacking away laying out the course for our trial on sunday. Hope we get a better turn out than last time but no doubt some people will sooner go and look at bikes than actually ride them

Just in case T&MX has forgotten to list it in regs available. Peak Classic Trials Club are holding round 9 of their 2011 club championship at Carsons Farm, Grange Mill nr Matlock Derbyshire this coming Sunday 16th October. Heres hoping we get a better turn out than the last trial when only 19 riders made it. There will classes for British Bikes, Twinshocks and pre95 air cooled monos. Along with three routes for Experts, Intermediate and Clubmen there will be something for everybody at this popular venue in the heart of the glorious Derbyshire Peak District. Entries close at start which will be at 11.00 plus as always the PB Trialsport van will be there for all your pre 65 and twinshock trials parts. Please bring an observer if you can who will be rewarded for their efforts. See you there

Must admit i have noticed a sense of "normality" returning to prices lately. Not everything mind as certain Marques are still attracting stupid money but even those, Majestys Hondas CCM etc, are not attracting the telephone numbers that they did even 6 months ago. Perhaps the recession/depression does have a silver lining ? assuming you have any spare cash which a lot dont. Somehow though i dont think these bikes will ever be ridden in competition just that money if youve got it isnt earning bu66er all in the bank so people are "investing" in Classic Bikes. Good if you want one bad if youre having to sell one. Thats the free market economy for you
