  1. Basically i would say fit what you like but and this is the nub for me anyway. What is most important to you loosing probably 40 more marks per trial or saving a few quid? I run an IRC rear and a Michelin front because i have tried other combinations and that is the combination that i feel gives ME the best chance of a good placing in the next trial which to me is the ONLY consideration.
  2. you didnt say if it was a trial run under ACU rules or not. If it was then it's a five if not then it depends on whatever the rules that the trial is run under states. ACU front spindle in front spindle out versus AMCA front spindle in rear spindle out rule is another one that riders and observers "choose" to interpret how they see fit. Either we follow the rules or we dont. Same thing as the ridiculous when is a stop a stop debate. in my experience it constantly exasperates me how few riders and observers ACTUALLY know the actual rules.
  3. 8e, 9e, 32a whichever you fancy. some prefer the alloy square barrel if so would have to be 9e or 32a. Best mod IMHO is to fit electronic ignition but as you want to stay within the spirit of pre65 then thats a no no isnt it? only other thing you can do is fit a efficient exhaust and air box which does help a lot.
  4. Welcome aboad. Nice that youve finally seen the error of your ways and got a proper trials bike. LOL
  5. Hopefully see you at at least one of our trials ? We dont get many pre 95 air cooled monos if that is what might put you off and the sections are now much more in line with Midland Classic and Dales Classic events We would love to see you at one of our events and i would welcome your feedback. Oh one thing if you enter on your Bultaco at Midland Classic declare it as a 1971 as they only allow Pre72 Twinshocks dont know why pre72 but just trying to offer a helpfull hint. Good luck.
  6. but unfortunately theres no fund to bail trials out.
  7. True but how many normal people especially those who ride trials are being paid, notice i didnt say earned,
  8. Two main associations ACU (need a competition licence) or AMCA (dont need a licence but your MX one will cover anyway) There is also YMSA who have adult classes (again will need a licence) Best to decide the area you want to ride, find a trial you want to ride in (T&MX News ) and either ring the number in regs available or just turn up and enter. Alternatively, hang on while i climb onto my soapbox, you could turn up and offer to observe before you have your first ride as that will give you a good insight into how it's done plus how to enter along with the satisfaction of being involved. All clubs are desperate for observers and i can think of no better way to introduce yourself to the wonderful world of trials. Hope that helps ?
  9. Sadly Charlie those of us who rode in the 60's and fondly remember the bikes we lusted for in those far off days are a dying breed. A good arguement for a historical tome if ever there was one but i think most riders of "modern Pre65 bikes" would'nt recognise an original never mind want to own one as they view them as uncompetitive in "modern classic trials" so are uninteresting, to them at least. Sad really but there are people out there who dont know what GOV 132 is or even appreciate why it was created. History isnt what it was mate
  10. At least they are trying. I've had the numbers through for over a week now.
  11. been saying this for ages but nobody seems to listen.
  12. Should be easy enough to get it welded and reamed to size. Nothing complicated there same for the other bits just get them rewelded as Montesa bits are in very short supply which is probably one of the main reasons they are not so prevalent in the results sheets. Good bikes but difficult to get bits for.
  13. Also depends on gearbox sprocket and chain size? I run 12 / 60 on a 428 chain. Works for me but if you dont like using the clutch try a 12 / 62.
  14. As anybody who has ridden a Scottish Pre65 "legal" Bantam will know you cant have too many gears. If you havent just try to imagine a three speed Bantam on trials gearing on the road. You dont need a speedo a calander would be more appropriate Anybody remember the Alta Suzuki with three speed box, or was it four? i seem to recall it was three, that had a lever on the top of the cranckcase to change to high or low ratio for the whole box. Never really caught on but seemed a good idea to me anyway.
  15. I and a lot of other people dont bother just giving them an occaisional polish. some people prefer them anodised black to try to give a more traditional appearance. In my experience the black seems to show the dirt more than the polished finish but down to personal preferance i suppose. Either way you will still have to clean them if you want a clean finish.
  16. Thats assuming you can get hold of one. I was told by Dave Renham they are special order only from Spain and you know what that means. 1 expensive and 2 might arrive sometime. So good luck although if you only need a std size you may have more luck than oversizes.
  17. Keep at it youre nearly there Hope the Peak trial gets the turnout it deserves. Good luck to all who have entered
  18. A lot of locals use 4's in cubs. Last time i tried to order some from my supplier they said they were having trouble getting them so if you have some hang on to them. Seems to one to fit for Cubs.
  19. Been watching this thread with interest but now we are onto minimum weight limits etc plus "allowing the sport to progress into the future" i think the sport has "progressed" (discuss) enough and perhaps too far in that it has "progressed" to a point way beyond the capabilitys and asperations, a LOT of people dont even desire to do some of the truly amazing things that the top guys can do who would be the only people who would derive any benifit from removal of the minimum weight limit, of "normal" people. All that would happen as has always happened in the sport is that sections would then be made even more ridiculous and we are rapidly approaching the point, if we have not already arrived, that some very serious injuries are waiting to happen because the bikes are so capable of things we never dreamed of but the outcome if we the rider gets it wrong dont bear thinking about. All forms of motorsport have realised that they cant just carry on regardless and that some limits need to be applied. Some have gone for a control tyre most have introduced some form of minimum weight limit, usually due to pressure from the manufacturers too low a limit, but they have all had to introduce some form of limitation to firstly keep the sport something like affordable to the majourity not just a select few who never buy their bikes anyway but also for safety reasons. In the trials world we also have another problem that of suitable land. If the bikes get ever more capable there will be such a lack of suitable terrain to test that capability that organisers will struggle to hold trials as we know them so the sport as we know it will die. It's already on life support. How would that be "progress" ? There is already a fall off in people wanting to take up the sport, well modern trials, as it is becoming so far removed from what they perceive as dooable that they take up something else. Good thread though i always enjoy technical discussion but you should always look at "progress" and decide if where you would be "progressing to" is where you really want to be?
  20. Dont look that pristine now LOL still rides a beaut though. That bike was what made me build mine. Not as good but according to those that have tried it close. Just got to modify and fit the 242 swing arm. Just wanted to use an alloy one to wind a certain person up LOL
  21. Correct me if i'm wrong but it appears he machined off the leading axle and then machined a couple of sleeved adaptors and shrunk them on ? Nice work very nice work so how does it handle? what about the front mudguard / exhaust/ front downtube issue? It's an earlier model than mine so the head angle may not be the same so there might not be a problem? Notice also the modified footrests which i have already done too.
