    What's New

Less moors, more tarmac is my suggestion Only kidding, the roadwork is a welcome break after a long, tough ride over the moors but even that gets a bit boring after a while. The only bit I was uncomfortable with last year was racing back to FW to 'clock off'. Risking life and limb across the moors or giving it some beans along a fast forest track can be dodgy but at least the public are not in danger if you bin it - I'll even admit to 1 or 2 risky overtaking manoeuvres on the back roads last year when I was tight for time. Actually, I was tight on time every day I can't remember much from last year but I do remember Laggan Lochs, the back markers shadowed me for 2-3 hours that day - absolutely soul destroying...
  2. I tried my best Very good trial, 2nd time I've done the Colonial and I have it marked as one of my favourite trials each year. Thanks to everyone involved

It wasn't a bad test for the 1st attempt. There was some decent ground to cover and it was superb on the roadwork - proper comfy. I got some funny looks off folk but nowt that I'm not used to It stayed in place but slid about from left to right a little bit. Some grippy material underneath and better straps would cure that though. I managed to fit loads in the little tool box and was well suited with it. Version 2 is now underway, which is going to be slimmer and slightly longer. It will have a fibreglass base that fixes to the bike using the bolt fixings on the rear mudguard. The inners will be 6lb reconstituted chip foam which will be carved into shape. Finally, a plastic waterproof membrane and a tough vinyl cover for the seat. Stay tuned... PS Anybody know where I can get hold of the '6lb reconstituted chip foam' ?

Don't worry James I know you weren't having a proper dig, I was just trying to explain why I decided to make the seat/toolbox. So, are you calling me a fat a***?

James, the seat will only ever be used for long tough trials like the SSDT, Scott, Ilkley GN etc. I don't intend to use it for the 4 laps of 10 sections jobby round a big field. Try and do an average of 100 miles a day for 6 days when you're pushing 40 and you'll want big pillows under yer ar$e too It's not been made for comfort, I want it to hold plenty of tools and also need it to raise my ar$e up 3 or 4 inches so that my knees don't seize up and pop out... Version 1 is tooled up and strapped to the bike for tomorrows Colonial, which is a longish single lap national trial. I'll see how it goes before starting on Version 2

Prototype Ver 1 The result? - It looks *****, it's too wide, it will probably fall apart within 10 minutes of use and I haven't even thought about how it's going to be fixed to the bike yet Ah well, live and learn - see here if you want a giggle... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/brian.curran1/temp.html
  9. Thumbs up to Mike Husband at http://www.motomerlin.co.uk I rang up and ordered the book yesterday and it arrived today, well wrapped up to protect it too. Cheers
  10. I'm sure the promoters will be hoping to make a big, fat, juicy profit and why shouldn't they? They are investing their time, money, resources, contacts & experience in organising it all As business men they will have certain priorities in mind (not in any particular order): - a ) Make sure the event gets loads of publicity, paying spectators, sponsors, advertisers etc. b ) Ensure that the event itself is a success for all involved c ) Cover all their costs incurred d ) Make a profit and get the chance to do it all again another time "PROFIT IS NOT A DIRTY WORD" Would you do all the work for nothing? Maybe you would and maybe you would aim to just cover your costs whilst promoting the sport that you love. To be honest, I had a quick look around the website tonight and was pretty impressed with the amount of information and detail on there considering the trial is still 6 months away. So, wake up to the real world and accept that hard work, commitment and a willingness to invest cold hard cash should be repaid somehow. Oh, and I forgive you
  11. Just had a phone call to say I've got a ride on Sunday at the Colonial No. 21 with the seat/toolbox - see rider for details/p*** taking

10cm of hardener to 50ml of resin - not enough hardener or too much resin?

The fibreglass coating was a lousy idea, sticky horrible mess all over the garage now. It's supposed to take 20 minutes to set but it's still tacky the day after. The seat measures 15" long, 6" wide and 4" deep, ideally it would need to be turned upside down and have the plastic formed/dropped that way. This would then give it the strength it needs - the top could then have some decent foam glued on before the seat covering is fitted.

I can let you know once I get home, mate of mine suggested 'blow moulding'. It's used for making stuff like car petrol tanks, watering cans etc.

Some crappy pictures here: - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/brian.curran1/temp.html Photos were taken after the first cut a couple of nights ago, it looks much better now as I've trimmed it and bevelled all the square edges off to make it look less 'boxy' The sides taper upwards but only slightly though...
