I might be miles out but I once repaired a Greeves, which was having exactly the same problems (it ran very sweet up to ¾ throttle) The carburettor was a new item, all the jetting was correct but it had a 4stroke spray tube Is there any chance yours could possibly have a 2stroke carb fitted?

Put a bit of neat 2 stroke oil (not castor based oil) down the plug hole and turn it over a few times, and keep it somewhere dry (might be worth turning it over a few times every 12 months or so)

Cheers jim I think the beamish I have purchased is quite an early silver engine one It does have valves on the forks, but they are not at 45 Degrees like on the beamish I used to own (these are straight up) does this make any difference? Or was all the beamish air assisted?
