  1. Figured that I would stir the pot a bit and post some pics of the bar risers that I made for my 199a. The riding position with my 6" bars would still result in pretty bad neck pain after a half an hour or so of riding due to a really jacked up neck from arthritis,various injuries and probably 30 years of operating heavy equipment. It is now pretty comfortable to ride.It doesn,t seem to affect the handling too much,but I,m a pretty novice rider and don,t try any big steps or splats. Switching to my brothers 199a with 5.5" bars when riding yesterday I can notice that in certain situations the risers do affect the handling in a negative way,but not a lot and I don,t know if I have much choice until I get my neck fixed,if thats possible.

Here in the states contact Alex Snoop for any help/advice or Ossa parts.If you have to split the cases just be careful and pay attention to what shim goes where and it probably wont need re-shimming unless you rebuild the crank.If so that would need to be checked for centering it in the cases. The MAR is the one trials bike that I really want,but haven,t found one close enough yet or at the right price. Good luck and chime in with any other questions.
  3. You really need to buy a Bultaco 5-speed shop manual.It will explain and show everything step buy step and be there to go back to when needed. When I did my first one it made it a whole lot easier.
  4. Yes,welcome bb.I have bought a few parts from Hogans,but more from his friend Alex Snoop down in NY-both good to deal with. You have picked one of if not the easiest vintage bikes to rebuild and it will indeed be a decent all rounder. My good friend who is also on TC is deep into the rebuild of two Alpinas and I,m sure he will offer any help you might need as well will everyone else on TC.

I got the idea from somewhere to safety wire it so it can,t turn.Mine is an older (1970) plonker and it has the post between the cylinder fins that I tied to,not sure if the later ones are the same. As you can see I did a sloppy wiring job that needs tightening up so maybe it has not tried to come loose? Nice job on the bike!

  7. I agree with the carb mod and good brakes along with good tires and shocks and that is all that is needed. In mechanically sound condition it is a very good bike and is more than capable for AHRMA trials.
  8. Thanks for the replies and you are correct Stuart.I t didn,t dawn on me until you mentioned it,but it should have because I found that out when I went to put an earlier model actuator shaft in my 199a.
  9. Very nice 199a in the classified adds and it mentions that it had the clutch bearing mod done to it. I,m more curious than anything as I seem to have mine working pretty good,but does anyone know what this mod is?

I would have to vote for a late model 325 Bul,very easy to work on and get parts for and smooth torque.That being said my experience is limited to Buls,my Ty250 A,TL125 and a KT250 that was borrowed to me for one trial. I have ridden one Fantic but it was a liquid cooled Section that had been ported and was a real brute for my limited skills. I agree with the suspension and handling comments and think that it comes down to what kind of power delivery do you prefer.
  11. It does seem to be a fuel delivery problem. Is it possible that the fuel cap is plugged up and not letting the tank vent causing it to run out of fuel? Sounds like you have covered about everything else,although I,d bin the Amal and try a mikuni.

  13. I was actually able to get out and ride it over the weekend although I did end up on the Ossa for most of the time because my brother was more at home on the Bul.

  15. Dave, Those two Buls that you built are pretty cool! They are hard to beat because they are so easy to work on and you can mix and match a lot of different parts. After seeing the photos I recognize you and the MXer from the Hammer and Tongs site.It seems like you guys have a good vintage following out there. Thanks for the links.
  16. Thanks for that John.The m10 Sherpa motor is rare as hens teeth here.The more I,ve thought about it the more I,m leaning towards keeping it what it is. If I could find an early Sherpa S tank and high pipe I would maybe put those on it just because I love the looks of those.

  18. I brought another one home.1967 Matador 4 speed.Not a trials bike and not real pretty,but I could not pass up the deal. Does anyone know how much difference there is in the transmission ratios between it and a 4 speed Sherpa T?
  19. There are two 1973 models on ebay for sale right now here in the U.S..They both have high mount fenders and look to be very original with decent photos for good reference. Good luck and enjoy!
  20. Jeremy,I can,t seem to find a definitive answer,but I did find these two pics that appear to be from brochures.If you are going to use it for trail riding I would go with a high mount.
