Before I get the hacksaw out does anyone have a diagram showing the location of the baffle plates on a 320 ? Have pushed a long screw driver through from where the silencer joins the middle box but cant find anything. The box has been previously welded and im wondering if one or both of the plates has been removed. The baffle tube is still present at the entry point.
There is somthing in there rattling as you can hear it when the engine is running but shaking the box it doesn't rattle ?

Fantic to SWM is a bit of a change.
Im going from a 2013 280 gas gas to SWM !
-
My bike had the wrong slide (60) and wrong pilot jet (also 60).
For yesterdays trial i fitted the 70 slide specified by Martin and it was 100% better, some improvement was probably down to cleaning the carb i think. I have now ordered the correct pilot jet as i have the mixture screw fully in. Also ordered some rock shocks as rear suspension will be an advantage i think.
Next jobs are a new clutch cable and to fix the baffle plate thats rattling inside the exhaust.
Really happy with this as a project and having a lot of fun. Bike development is underated in some respects. I put my Gas Gas on the box stand on saturday then did the same with the SWM, its a bit heavier ! You dont realise how much bikes have improved in terms of performance until you have them both to compare. However i do like the heavy flywheel on the SWM, its almost impossible to stall even in third gear.
Happy Days...

Its the same principle all you are doing is changing the leverage ratio at the handlebar end rather than the clutch end. If you use the cable hole giving the least travel on the cable it should be lighter.I think the later models had something different done compared to the red swms on the clutch mechanism inside the cover but martin will know better.
By the way does yours leak from where the cable enters the case ? Mine does so will need to get the mastic gun out. Is there supposed to be an o ring or seal in there ?

Thanks for the link, I thought that was a lot for you. My bike has wrong slide per Martins spec above so have ordered correct one which should clear up carburation, well that and removing the water I found!
-
Ross did you say that lever on your bike was made by Apico ? Cant find it in their catalogue. Steve (curry?) rather than extending arm inside case its easier to fit a lever with a different ratio or fit any easy clutch device. Also look in another thread in here what swm fitted to the jumbo framed models.

Thanks Martin
No doubt be speaking to you shortly !

Hi folks
Rode my newly acquired 280 yesterday. I think its an 80 or 81 model. Black frame with sumpguard and Marzocchi forks.
Can you answer some questions
How much oil and what grade for the forks ?
Pre mix 50:1 ?
What oil for gearbox ?
Bike has dellorto carb which I am about to clean , any ideas on std jet sizes and needle for uk ?
Cheers

Good point. I thought the 93 and 94 models from Gas Gas were fantastic however when I rode them tben jumped on a friends 270yam the marks lost were about the same although the Gas Gas did feel much better. On other sections result may have been different

Dont start dabster off again on succesd criteria

Thought i might post something slightly more constructive as not for the first time i'm getting rather tired of this discussion in that we never seem to recommend a solution other than to go back to some previous system as we have forgot why that didnt work last time.
The objective is to get more entries in the WTC and hopefully more entries in trials in general. Personally i think we could live without the World Championship as its not generating enough sales which i think the sport needs.
First of all the previous post by Gizza 5 is absolutely right in that it is too soon to judge and WTC rules dont impact on what we do on a sunday, we dont need to follow the WTC into extinction.
Dabster is on the right lines if exaggarating somewhat, Erzberg according to their own website had 1500 entries for the prologue, reduced to 500 for the main event. Its an international event open to all levels of rider so i think its reasonable to compare the SSDT or French 4 day. SSDT actually has 275 places but fewer started this year. Not sure how many the french four day gets but i'd guess max of 200. So on the basis of these events, accepting this is hardly scientific, the enduro market is between 5 and 7 times bigger for international event anybody can ride than trials.
I have come round to thinking that the answer isnt a rule change however. Its more about having an enjoyable day out on a bike, all the popular no stop events also happen to be more like the original trials concept, a long lap with some significant distance between the sections. Think about it, if your having a rubbish day in the sections you still can enjoy yourself inbetween the sections, something you cant do in a four lap trial round a field.
The Valtellina 3 day in Italy embraces the range of ability in a different way to the UK to make the event viable. This year only 35 competitors rode the trial, but it didint matter as another 100 turned up and just rode round the course. They seemed to have a great time stopping off for lunch and having a coffee whenever they felt like it. The bonus for me was that there were no queues. The bonus for the dealers and manufacturers was all of these people seemed to have very recent machines, plenty of new betas, Gassers etc and they also had all the kit.
Most of the riders entering Erzberg must know they wont get past the prologue but it doesnt matter as presumably they still enjoy it. Valtellina achieved the same with their mountain course with no sections. How do we accomodate this kind of rider into UK events ?
-
Not that simple as was proved countless times. Rider loses balance lets go of clutch and dabs at the same time. Rider says I was moving observer awards 5. All trials observing systems are effective on paper !
-
Yes that was tried Nigel.
Such a system was place I seem to recall. Fantastic in that at world rounds you could have 3 or 4 observers for each section. So between 45 and 60 observers for around 10 riders. Marvellous. In addition each rider needed a travelling mechanic, a minder and someone to pass them a drink. So 6/7 people for one attempt at one section. Brilliant.
-
As riders got better at balancing they did it for longer. Roll forward to uk round in the early nineties and grimbo took 7 mins to ride one section. This meant even with 7 hour time limits riders where taking a 5's to finish on time.
-
Trials has to be viable. If Dabsters comments on enduro bike sales are valid why on earth are people making trials bikes ? Why bother sponsoring anybody ?
Trials started on adapted road bikes we may end up on adapted enduro models if its not worth making a specific trials bike. So while you all long for the happy days of stop permitted can I ask what should the FIM do if changing the rules isnt the solution to generating more sales.
-
No Dabster the point is if stop permitted is going to attract young riders why hasn't so far ? We have fewer young riders than ever and that cant be blamed on no stop now can it ?
-
Thats nothing wait till you price the fan unit
-
Hi Fella
plenty of geordies and mackems on here to keep you right with local trials.
forums are good for advice on your bikes so ask away !
welcome !
-
Right then fellas after talking about it for years next friday I am collecting my first SWM. Looking about where do you get specific swm bits like air filters, points (assuming its points) mudguards, pistons etc ? I dont need these bits now im just trying to plan ahead.
-
No I wouldnt recommend a 300 gas gas to a beginner or a 300 anything else for that matter. By a 250, it will have more than enough power.
-
Id like to think he is finished by now lol ! Seriously I saw a pic of him at the finish.
-
Yes send it to Steve at bradford ignitions fixed mine one time and was still ok six months later when I sold the bike. He has a web site might be either Bradford ignitions or motoplat uk
-
JR std time but dont know if confirmed yet
-
They sponsor some trials and enduro riders but not the entire sport of enduro
-
Have noticed some supported riders going back to AJP on their bikes. What do factory boys use ?
