Same here,it was peeing down at 7.30am when I poked me head out the window.Then felt guilty all day that I had a lazy morning in bed.

My silver engined Beamish sounded like a stone crusher back in 1985,but it always went well and it never got any worse in the 5 odd years my brother and I had it.The comment about the China piston is valid though,I couldnt get a genuine one for my TY 250 back in 06 when I rebuilt it.Despite a really good bore finish by a trusted machine shop and me spending hours filing the port edges - it rattles. Its no worse now though after 4 years of hard work,but only sounds worse when really hot or just as it runs out of fuel.So making sure its not pulling in air or simply set up too lean will help.

Think you are right,the petrol tank and timing cover are probably the only real HT5 bits on my HT.......

I think TCA is for a 1952 VHA 500cc road bike ?

I guess the Ariel owners club may hold the records or copies of them.Whatever HT3's must be pretty rare now,probably more replicas than real ones ?

Not during the trial,the weather was great.it did shower for 10 mins when we finished on sat,but that was it.I've not managed to do the Exmoor 3 day yet,I want to go to the Red Marley hill climb first. I'm sure you would be most welcome at the Exmoor or Dartmoor next year,you ought to suggest an award for furthest travelled.

Don Morley's book suggests that it was "suspected" that not more than 40 were built and just under 460 HT5's.

I bought some grey plastic ones from John Cane at Telford last year for my TY four stroke project.I've seen them fitted on Cubs and they look really good - may be worth seeing if he still does them.

Agreed - it was a top notch trial,well marked out in a beautiful setting.Even with the mother of all hangovers I had a really good time on Sunday. One day I will do the 2 day sober and really concentrate...... (Or maybe I should just carry on enjoying a weekend of boozing,trials and ace scenery.)

Dont, - I've just got toooo much on the go.I walk past it 20 times a day with lots of dust on it,not done anything on it for a good 6 months.Since I took on the job of trials sec for the Bath club I seem to have very little spare time,and its not just trials,I'm also in the middle of rebuilding my Ducati heads one of which took a whole day...... then theres my HT5 which i'm in the middle of fitting an electrex world ignition system to. But the Ty project will get done,its not really that far off mechanically,just finish the airbox and wire it up.I plan to do a dry test before I paint any of it.

He is still around,I followed him into the car park at the last Golden Valley trial. His stuff may not be cheap,but he does some really nice bits and his enthusiasm is helping to keep up interest in the Yam and Majesty thing.I'd buy one of his frame kits if I wasnt up to my armpits in other projects.......

Yours was a good section - a test of ability but not too tight,certainly not dangerous.But then none of them were.It was sections 1 and 2 that I thought were just too tight for any better riders on Pre 65 kit,they were bad enough on a twinshock,but seemed more appropriate for modern bikes.The B route looked excellent all the way through,wish I'd been riding my Ariel - that would have been a good ride. Its a tough call,trying to mark out to please all,the weather didnt help much either,I think it caught all of us out.I was having bike trouble 1/2 way through my 2nd lap and went back to the car to sort it out,seemed to me that several people had gone home already,not seen any results so I dont know how many didnt finish.

Thats an easy one to answer,I spent months looking for a rigid Ajay,found nothing worth buying and I wasnt fussy about price.I just wanted a sorted bike to ride.The only offer I had was for a rigid that was so smart I wouldnt have dared get it muddy,it had all the original bits on it and was 100% in every way. I mentioned my frustration at a club meeting and afterwards I was offered an HT5 that was mostly sorted - I bought it at asking price,it was a good offer.Since buying it the mag has decided to pack up and I'm converting it to an Electrex electronic unit on the end of the crank.As soon as its done I'll be out on it. What I'm sayiong is that there are not many big bangers on offer that you can just buy and ride - I gave up on the rigid,but the Ariel is lovely to ride.Good luck !

Seems most people go for the PVL electronic ignition now,or look at the Electrex world website,their kit seems to work well. I'm in the middle of fitting one of their kits made for a C15/B40 onto my HT5 Ariel,neat little unit that gives 27 degrees of automatic advance. As for carbs alot are using Dellorto's around here,the old Keihin Honda CB125 unit is becoming less fashionable.Hope that helps.
