It does sound more electrical than fuel, look at the obvious first Check all the electrical connections, clean the earths, check plug, cap and coil lead. if these don't make any difference get the coil, cdi and stator checked with a multimeter. The thing that makes the problem harder to find is that it's a stinkin intermitent fault!!!!

I think youll have to take you rims to a machine shop and have the parts milled out.

I can't remember which plug but when you find out buy a spare. When i used to go out with a friend who had one , every now and then it would just kill a plug!! not very often "about every 6 months" but good to have a spare just incase.

I think the repsol version looks sweet, but the standard bike looks a bit odd?? like they forgot to do the exhaust and a few other bits?

doh!! i just read you've got spark!! i had a similar problem with a 97' techno i had, but never found anything wrong with it, it just fixed itself!

Has he pulled the throttle cable out a bit accidentily?? Check the slide is free in the carb, if you flick the throttle you should here it clunck back down when you leave go?? Have you got spark?
