  1. Brilliant thanks Dirtrider. I really am a bit of an old woman when i've not been to a venue before. Always seem to get lost Usually ok with pubs though So look out for the Half Moon then start braking as the Transit brakes are err "interesting" at the moment Looking forward to it as should be dry and after the Grange Barn slimefest will make a change. Assuming i can find some fork tops as i've just buggered mine up trying to machine some off and went right through. Bugger just have to nick some off the Sherpa temporarily. See you's all there if youre going Sunday
  2. Sounds like the wrong springs are in there anyway. Fork oil controls the damping not the spring rate. As a temporary measure try longer pre tensioner spacers but make sure the springs dont get coil bound. If you have any try putting some old valve springs in instead of the preloaders. Ideally the bike with you onboard should sag about an inch and settle there coming back up as soon as you climb off. Good luck
  3. I'm currently putting together a Villiers 32a engine to go in the James frame, when it eventually arrives , and i've got to sort out the ignition. Now i've got a PVL on the B40 and am most impressed but i dont know what is the best system to fit on the Villiers engine so was wondering if anybody had any experience of them. As usual heard different stories about the systems on offer so which is the best? I cant afford to buy a system only to find that it's not up to scratch or unreliable. Oh yes dont know if it matters but i've got an Alpha full circle crank with a std Villiers taper fitted. Havent got a flywheel yet as i thought it might depend on the type of ignition i eventually get what i fit. So there must be some of you out there using one opinions please
  4. Thanks Trickymicky i will be coming in the other way from J30 off the M1. Lets just hope that nobodys moved the sign Thought there was a problem with the Midland classic site but i think they have a new website with a slightly diferent address and found it now after Googleing for it Totalshell i would dearly love to ride one of your rounds. When i get a bike that is "legal" i will have to make the long journey up there. Must say your site is brilliant and it's amazing how you get not just the results on there by tea time the same day but piccys as well So when Mr Whitton gets his finger out and i get the bits to build my James then my only excuse will be lack of talent cos youre all Trials gods oop there in gods own country and i'm not worthy Thanks for the help and if anybodys going to "South Africa" on Sunday say Hi I'm the old fat bloke stuck under a red B40
  5. Hi. As some of you know i have started back riding again and i was looking forward to my second trial on Sunday at the Midland Classic Club event at "Rhodesia". Problem is as i am "new" at this i dont know where "Rhodesia" is so if anybody could give me directions from Derby i would be most grateful. I think it's somewhere near Worksop. Sorry to ask but i know some of the riders that go to the Midland classic events look in on here from time to time. Thanks.
  6. Only just started riding again as some of you know and then only in Classic Pre 65 trials. I observed at some events before getting the bike finished and did find a few riders ask in a questioning tone what their score was. This is ok in my book. However there should never ever be an occaision when any rider for any reason argues with an observer. We are only a bunch of old and not so old "wobblers" playing at it for Christs sake. It's not life or death. One thing i have noticed at Midland Classic and Peak Classic events is that 99% of the entry made a point of thanking the observer on the last lap which is something i have tried to also do as i feel it's the least i can do for somebody who has stood out in the cold and wet so i can enjoy my sport. In fact they should receive at least a
  7. Sorry just been out to the shed and i've no idea what happened to mine Took mine off and plugged the hole as i was sick of the oil leaks. Surprised yours is a bugger to start as mine always starts first kick then again i have PVL fitted. Have you tried C & D Autos or Dragan fly or Gagg and sons in Nottingham? I'm in the shed again tomorrow, nothing on locally, so if i find the parts i will let you know. IMHO theyre more trouble than they are worth but each to their own
  8. Havent got a two seater, do you mean car or bike?, to swap but will probably put a bid on the B40 if you do relist it. Use a different name on ebay though. Good luck
  9. Dave your bike would be fine for pre 65 trials in fact i remember i put a bid in on it However your post asked about the scottish pre65 event which is an entirely different can of worms as you may have gathered from the responses. Think after looking closely at your bike that the guy is just trying to get out of the deal. I remember your listing and there was nothing wrong or infered in it. The bike would be fine in almost any center i can think of, just take the number plate off, just perhaps uncompetitive as most B40's are pretty tricked up. You still have to ride them though as i recently found out Are you going to relist on e bay? Might pop a bid in on it myself if you do.
  10. Must admit i dont remember that many people running Tiger Cubs with the bottom engine mounting removed and rewelded onto the rear of the crankcase, 250 cc engine, no bottom rails to the frame which also has revised head an steering geometry and made out of lightweight high tensile tubing, Marzocchi disguised forks and gas shocks oh yes and a titanium exhaust in 1964. But then again the memory plays tricks eh As has been previously said the name Dave Thorpe et al, not picking on him as he is only one of many, seemed to have a strange effect on the eyesight and unbiased technical judgement of the scrutineers. Remember the post was asking about the potential elegibility of davehills BSA B40. Well the obvious honest answer is "it's got bugger all to do with the bike it all depends on who you are." Plus Tiger Cubs all over the land seem to get away with twisting the rules as their owners see fit, frames forks Mikuni carbs 250cc conversions and god only knows what else, whilst "other makes and models" are not allowed to. My advice to davehill is sell the B40 and buy a tiger cub. Oh yes and change your name to Dave Thorpe or Mick Andrews Mick Grant or some other "great" picked at ramdom from past top placers. Go on prove me wrong
  11. How did Dave Thorpe get away with riding a McDonald Cub then ?????
  12. Surely you are not suggesting that one of Rupert Murdochs companies has not researched something thoroughly before broadcasting???? Surely not Serves you right for watching Sky. You should be in the shed fettling for Sunday
  13. Appologies Andy didnt realise i had committed a miss demeanor Must have started something as some Yamaha posts seem to have migrated to other forums too. If i have anything to post in future i will think twice and type once.
  14. Thanks for that. Do appreciate it. Unfortunately i was unable to get up there, like many others, and apart from the photos on this site feel so left out.
  15. Been on the official SSDT site but nothing on there about the Pre 65 trial. Anybody know who won or a site where i can see the results
  16. Thought she normally rode a Bantam? Well she did last time i saw her at a Peak Classic trial Shame we dont see more young ladies in trials
  17. "Should anyone be forced to ride a standardish bike with a jap carb against such a thing. I think not." Should you be allowed to fit Japanese carbs to "Pre65 trials bikes"
  18. Totally agree M8 Dont know why they still keep up the pretence unless it's to keep the people who do the fiddle forks, at great expense i might add, in business? Never did make any sense to me. Plus the Scottish is a law unto itself. Then again youve probably got as much chance of winning the lottery as getting an entry in the Pre65 Scottish unless you are a "name" Never mind as you said it's all about enjoyment. Enjoy the building and riding something you built not someone else
  19. In answer to your question if i remember correctly the engine is 37A with bits and the hubs are copy billet alloy ones. Whatever the problem is that if you are a "name" you seem to able to get away with a lot more "mods" and "bits" than Joe Public. Bit like Aerials in the Scottish can get away with murder whilst C15 and B40 riders can't even use oil in frame frames. Youve just got to talk to the people in the clubs who will exclude or reclassify your bike. Sad but true. Never was a level playing field. Just build it as you can afford and sod em At the end of the day it's only a bit of fun isnt it ?
  20. Tother end Derby. Just getting back into trials after a 20 year absence. Seeing as i'm too old, too fat and with absolutely no talent whatsoevr i took one look at modern trials and thought? wheres the nearest pub So this year, hopefully, i will be mostly doin "Classic and Twinshock trials". Well they at least looked more like what i remembered a trial was So the two clubs i will be riding at will be Peak Classic, i dont think they have a website, and Midland Classic http://www.midlandclassic.co.uk/index2.html You never know we may cross paths? Enjoy your trialling
  21. Most trials in Derbyshire are held around the Matlock area. Your best bet is to look in Trials and Motorcross news. Then ring the organiser up. They will be happy to tell you directions to their event. They are always desperate for new blood and or observers. Alternatively use the site above and get the number of the sec from the ACU site and ring them. A lot of clubs use the same land. Burrycliffe Quarry near Elton, Bracken Rocks near Whatstandwell and Grange Farm being three that come to mind. Hope to see you there.
  22. Just thought i ought to mention it. The bikes not mine. This is mine.
  23. Must admit i too have a soft spot for the Commerford Cub and if i had one i would restore it. But it's your bike so it's up to you. "Incidentally what is the eligibility of a Comerfords Cub in Pre65 events as they were built in 1967/68?" You are joking arent you? If you look at some of the Cubs competing. 250cc, PVL, Mikuni carb, fiddle forks, MacDonald frames, modified crankcases, repositioned engine mountings, gas shocks, billet alloy hubs, titanium exhausts, titanium spindles etc etc You think a Comerford cub isnt elegible? I think that some of the organisers must be Doctor Who with their "interpretation" of the space time continum A Comerford Cub entered in any Pre 65 event is more in the spirit of the thing than probably the entire rest of the entry Good luck to you anyway. Piccy please when it's finished
  24. Dont know if this is of any help but http://www.ssdt.org/ Worth a look
