  1. Hi, i`ve come across a real gem of a montesa 247, its been sat in a garage since 82 and is totally original although a little rusty in places and the seat has dried and split. Unfortunately the rear guard snapped at some point but I do have the part to piece it. Its road reg and still has the rob edwards stickers on the tank. Trouble is I cant get the thing to start. I`ve done everything I already know it will need. I emptied the tank and filled with fresh premix fuel. Ive checked the points and timing (.40mm gap and opening at 2.5mm btdc). the spark is blue and strong. I`ve completely stripped and cleaned the carb, the choke jet was blocked solid, the main wasnt much better, pilot seemed ok. I`ve blown all the airways out thoroughly but it still doesnt want to fire. Even pouring a little petrol into the barrel doesnt help. I`ve tried a few different plugs, champion L9 and ngk b5hs and that makes no difference, they do seem to be getting a little wet but not as much as id like. The engine has excellent compression so I dont think the seals are a problem. Any ideas. I`ve a pic on my phone I can txt if any one wants to put one onto my topic for me.
  2. Not sure how to put pics on if you pm me your phone number I can txt you a pic, ive just had the head off and it is a 156 barrel on the bike. Should make a good bike when its finished, will make a change to the big 340
  3. Im on restoring a fantic pro twinshock that has the number 76 scratched into a blob of black paint on the headstock. My guess is its an ex ssdt bike but only a 125cc. Im interested in its history as i`d really like to re register it and put it back on the road. Also its fitted with a non standard exhaust which I believe is a polini that goes up the left side of the engine and looks the same as a beta tr34. Any info on the bike, rider or number would be a big help in tracing the reg. Thanks for looking.
  4. Try some ex army goretex trousers, hard wearing, waterproof and cheap as chips.
  5. Ive recently bought a tired pinky, I was hoping to restore it but due to having too many fantic projects on the go im thinking of selling. Its a good runner but needs a lot of tidying to make a good bike so looking for opinions on wether its better to sell as a complete bike or take my chance and break it. The only problem I have in selling is I think I may have been a bit generous in how much I paid for the bike.
  6. It will fit but I had to modify my frame rail for the flywheel cover, exhaust port is larger on the 303(250cc) than the 240(212cc). I had the 303 exhaust cut and welded onto my 240 pipe. Its not a reed valve motor they came with the 5 series engines and I also bought a genuine 300 carb inlet manifold and hose for the 303 carb which is a larger carb than the 240 had. Worth the effort though in my opinion its much better with the bigger motor in.
  7. Thanks for the negative input, the whole point of me waiting 10yrs for him to give it a go is so I dont end up being another of the redfaced idiots who shout at their kids cause they cant do it. When I think of all the trials ive missed because kiddo wanted to go fishing or skateboarding or mountain biking instead. Its his choice to try the sport not mine. Biting like a scrapyard dog is good for the soul. Yes I have to admit its good of ron to admit his mistake and I certainly wont hold a grudge against bradford or him.
  8. 1st time ive whinged about a trial as ive marked them out in the past and know its a thankless and time consuming job but todays beginners trial was a joke. I even phoned to ask before making the 2 hr trip if it would be suitable for a 1st timer (my son) as its taken me 10 yrs to get him interested and after 1 lap struggling on it looks like he`ll never go again. The 1st two sections were ok but then it started getting silly. Im not hiding behind a computer to make this comment its just I thought it best to wait until id calmed down a bit incase I upset anyone. I just wanted to make a point and I know I wasnt the only one who had problems as there seemed to be quite a few people in the same boat and certainly a few people made similar comments.
  9. Dont want to get into an argument but the guy did ask if the fantic 300 is a good first bike? NOT is the fantic 300 a good bike? I`ve a few fantics myself including a 340 so know how good they are but I did say imo they need a lot of looking after and spares are hard to find, try buying a genuine piston!. Surely you have to agree a good first bike would be something easy to ride like a lightweight 200 or even a modern mono.
  10. IMO they are not a good bike for a beginner, they take a lot of looking after and spare parts are hard to find. The 240 is a much better bike as the 300 motor is quite a handful. At 650 its not dear and if its in reasonable cond you could probably double your money, one thing definately to check is the back of the engine behind the drive sprocket where it clamps around the swingarm spindle, they are nearly always broken or cracked and its a big job to have them repaired.
  11. Thanks for the info, mines running a 35 pilot and 125 main, seems smooth enough.
  12. Been out on the bike all weekend, going to give it a service and clean the carb out just wondered before I strip it down if any body has the original factory settings for a 2011 290 carb. The mixture screw is 4 1/2 turns out which seems a bit much to me.
  13. Sounds like a blocked pilot jet to me!
  14. Does the engine clamp round the spindle?
  15. Have you seen the one for sale on gumtree in county durham?
  16. Thats what I thought, a bolts a bolt no matter what bike its on. If you cant use a spanner its not the bikes fault if it falls off. I have spent the night sealing the rear rim tape though, easy enough job but would have thought it would have been done by now. Thanks for the replies guys.

    2011 290

Just picked up a 2011 290 sherco and wondered if anyone has any tips or ideas for maintaining these bikes. Are there any do`s and donts and is atf ok for the gearbox. The clutch was stuck on when I picked it up and it took a good few minutes riding with the brake on to free it off so i`m guessing its due an oil change, also its fitted with a 2 stage mapping switch, i`m guessing setting 1 is softer than 2. Any help welcome.
  18. Try using a rawl bolt, the type you put in concrete. They expand when you tighten them and you can get it with a hammer then.
  19. Fortunately the bike came with a new piston, I read in an earlier thread that their is no difference between a 325 and 340 barrel so just had one bored to fit.
  20. Only had to replace the piston, did the seals while it was out but everything seemed okay. It runs spot on.
  21. Thanks for the help, I tried to drag and drop the pics and they looked ok when I previewed the post but then dissappeard.
  22. Sorry but the pics haven`t come on, post looks a bit stupid without them, so andy feel free to remove it.
