Hey, All! I'm slowly getting work done on my project TY250A. I got the swingarm "repaired", sandblasted, primered and shot some rattle can enamel on it today. The old "bumps" on the the swingarm that the snail chain adjusters push off of were really worn with grooves somehow. Maybe someone (previous owner) let the rear axle get loose? I say this because there is also damage to the dust collar on the drive side of the sprocket and the inside of the swingarm itself. I dunno how it could've happened, but it did. I ground off the old bumps, and drilled and tapped for 6mm allen headed bolts for the adjusters to work from: Now, I'm working on my fiberglas…

  2. Hi, All! Working on making my recently purchased 1974 TY250 rideable. I'm doing repairs from probably decades of neglect, abuse, and a bit of "Hillbilly Engineering" from the previous owner(s). At the same time, I'm making a few minor "upgrades"; like the Sammy Miller wide footpegs that lower and move the pegs slightly rearwards. This requires removal of the swingarm bolt. While that bolt is out, I thought I'd look into replacing the grease nipple and the pivot bushings. I got the swingarm bolt out after somewhat of an epic battle. Now I'd like to get the long inner bushing out; the one sorta shaped like a long dog bone that goes completely through the swing a…

  3. Fitted a electronic ignition as instructuons say. Now ty will only start by putting a drip of petrol down bore. Good spark, new petrol, clean carb, reeds look ok. Timing is 2-3mm measured with strobe. Once running rev/ rides fine. Kicks back up ok. Only tried it for 10mins running Any ideas before i put old ignition on to prove a point, or is 200 majesty timed diffent to a ty175 Thanks

Has anyone used KT250 forks on a TY? If so, pros and cons? Did you use a KT or TY wheel? If using a TY wheel, how did you mount the brake arm? Possible scenario is KT250 forks used on a TY175 to have larger/stiffer 34mm front end to get rid of the flex with the small 28mm(?) 175 fork. I haven't been able to source a TY250 set and came across a set from a KT. I was also wondering how the leading axle from the KT would work. Hoping someone has tried this over the last 50 years.

Hi, Is it possible to use 1975-1976 LH and RH crankcases from YZ125 with the all the components and covers of TY175?

  7. Started by Niro,

Hi, The ball and the spring for the shift cam can be installed through the threaded hole when the cases are put together? or only when the cases are split? (the cases are currently split, and there actually no ball, just spring) Part number: 93505-16006 (#6 in the attached picture) thanks

What is my best option for alternative cylinder (barrel) for 1975 TY175 USA? DT175 or CT175? Or maybe something else? Thanks

Hi. I have an ongoing problem with the clutch on my TY175. In a nutshell when in gear and with the lever in, the clutch is not quite disengaging. There is the correct amount of play at the lever and at the adjuster behind the case on the left hand side. I understand there is a couple of different pushrod options with the TY. Some drawings show a Rod, ball and mushroom and some without the ball bearing. I’ve taken the clutch off and there is no ball bearing. However adding a ball bearing means that the pressure plate sits too high. I'm also led to understand that the washers that sit under the inner and outer baskets are different sizes. Could it be that I h…

Hi all, I’ve just picked up a ty80 to restore for my daughter when she’s old enough. unfortunately the engine casing has cracked which has caused oil to get to the stator and the ignition source coil is now giving continuity to ground. im struggling to find a replacement specifically for the ty80. Does anyone know of any other which fits? It’s a single coil stator

Hi team, Had an issue with my TY, engine ran away due to leaking crank seals, totally leaned the poor thing out and had to stall it to stop the engine. Replaced seals and upon re start very noisey, struggling to idle and noticing movement in the head and barrel so presumIng I have stripped the head studs. Has anyone else experienced this? Cheers Rob.

A 1978 TY250 was left in a stable of a house I bought. After 20yrs of looking at it, I thought I'd get it going. The job was nearly done, but I fear I've just messed it up. The last step was installing a new carb, after which it started fine (multiple times) and sounded decent but did not have enough revs to tick over when the throttle was released. I was adjusting the Idle Adjust Screw, turning it clockwise, and starting to observe an increase in idle revs, when I realised I'd left the choke on. I turned the choke off, and the engine died. Since then I have not been able to start the bike. Not even close. Suspecting that after many failed starting attempts I had flooded …

  14. I really like the looks of the Shedworks Tank/Seat combination; however, I can't figure out if it is compatible with the 1974 TY250? I struggle to understand what is compatible with the rear fender that uses the fiberglass seat pan. In all the pictures I see it seems the models are later versions, with a different rear mudguard and I can't find this other mudguard for sale (I have the short mudguard where the air box is part of the rear mudguard). Is a different rear fender needed for this to work? Is the stock air box compatible with the Shedworks setup? I also see majesty style aluminum tanks that look good, they seem to use a different rear fende…

Hi all, I have a pair of TY250 mono forks model 38V, but the left fork leg doesn’t have a thread cut into it for the axle bolt, the plain hole is small enough diameter to tap a thread into. I’m just wondering why it wouldn’t have had the thread in it already?. Has anyone come across this before? thanks

What is a good alternative to a TY 175 fork, I know many replace them with TY 250 fork but since there so few of them avalable maybe there is an alternative that does not require me to sell my home to buy Guy

  17. Started by 56k,

After 16 years it's back! This thing endured my father, my brother and myself without any real engine work or maintenance. It just kept going. Some of my earliest memories are of my father sitting me on the gas tank and putting around the woods. I still remember back when I was 12 or 13 and kicking it over for the first time and taking off in the woods for the rest of the day - my dad's rule was that if I was big enough to start it, I was big enough to ride it. I've spent the last 2 years slowly dismantling every piece, painting the frame, rebuilding the engine, etc. Thanks everyone. This place was a massive help. I've gone through many years of threads lo…

  19. Started by 56k,

I'm a little confused as to what I should run for the ring gap. I'm using an aftermarket wossner forged piston, 71.44mm. Their online ring gap calculator gives the following suggestions: naturally aspirated: 0.29mm (0.0113 in) naturally aspirated racing: 0.32mm (0.0127 in) snow/marine: 0.36mm (0.0141 in) forced induction: 0.39mm (0.0155 in) heavy load/high heat: 0.43mm (0.0169 in) I'm guessing since it's air cooled I should go for 0.43mm (0.0169 in). I've never done this before so I wanted to ask people with more experience than me if this sounds about right. I'm not sure what the oem manual calls for or if it even applies since I'm using afterma…

  20. Frustrated .... '74 Yamaha TY250 Trials ran fine but a little flat at top end. Decided to try a CDI kit to get better performance. Installed the CDI kit and wouldn't start. I rechecked and set the timing with a strobe lite and turned the crank using a drill with socket in the CCW direction. Prior to timing, checked and marked TDC and .122" piston BTDC location on crank case. Next I pulled the spark plug. With the plug grounded to case i see a nice blue arc when i use the kick starter. After kicking my leg tired. Pulled the plug and it was wet. I pulled the plug and let the cylinder air out overnight and tried the next morning. No start. the kill switch in not part of the…
