Hi Chris,
I have a 199A & a recently bought/semi restored Model 124. The correct shocks are Betor 13.4" centre to centre these were originally fitted and are readily available from Sammy Miller Products or Dave Renham at Bultaco UK who is your best bet for most everything Bultaco.
If the chrome liners in the brake drums are worn away I can suggest a repairer for these who can reline the hubs without removing the wheel rim.
Unable to help you with the tank repair though.
Good luck with the rebuild.

Del-Orto all the way unless you intend to ride the SSDT P65 trial, fit one & forget it they are perfect for the Cub.
Who are UPB?
-
My Bultaco 199A has had an alloy petrol tank from new, most of the similar 199A bikes that I have seen have a plastic tank fitted as did many of the previous model red Bults & the 340. Was the alloy tank an option or was it only fitted to certain models?

Thank you for posting the excellent video. Trials riding at its simple best, it just makes you want to go and ride your bike.
-
I have tried both short & long lever blades on my bikes, peresonally I prefer the longer type.
-
Absolutely the same dimensions, completely interchangeable with each other.
-
Thank you BJ for the information, makes you wonder why Bultaco did not fit a similar shield as original equipment.
-
Has anyone purchased one of these, if so did it fit allright, holes align etc.

They appear to offer more width of coverage/protection than the std shield is this so. I also seem to recall an aftermarket shield that was turned or curved round at the sides, does anyone know if they are still available.
-
I now have the bike & it is a Model 124, the (matching) engine & frame numbers are 12400359. Is this an early or later model, were there any changes made throughout the production run.
The fitted exhaust is the clubfoot type (but has been chrome plated along with the swinging arm) otherwise exactly the same as the black painted one on my 199A, might this be an original fitment ?
Homerlite tank/seat unit is fitted, although carrying a few dings is far nicer than I imagined.
Any settings for the ignition, carb, best gearing for use in today's trials etc would be most welcome along with worthwhile mods.
-
If you are riding in club trials why worry, buy whatever you fancy and enjoy using it. Irrespective of what is made in the future you will own an a trials bike that will enable you to compete, just as many still do with the TY175/TY250 Mono and every other bike made since.

Thank you Big John, on the project bike have you carried out the footrest position mod that was recommended by Senor Greeves here on TC a little while ago. If you know what is involved or have any pictures I would be interested to see them. Being 6' 4" tall I find the std Bulto rests set a little too high.
-
I think many people prefer to rebuild a bike themselves believing that they will make a better job of it (whilst ignoring the economic realities) or make it more suitable for their needs over a purchased ready done bike which may have had some shortcuts taken.
Off topic I know, Big John you mention above (No.1 son has helped himself to the 199A I bought from the Bingleys, now fitted with a Mikuni and electronic ignition, worth the expense) In which areas have these parts most improved the bike and did the Mikuni take much setting up?
Would you please describe the changes being made to the project bike.
-
I have seen James frames that Roger has made but not sure if he has built any for the BSA engine, Paul Jackson has made frames to suit the BSA C15/B40.
-
Thank you all for the info. I had forgotten that on the 199A the model number is part of the engine & frame numbers, I will check those on the 124.
Not best pleased to learn of the starting issues though, I wonder if it could be cured by using a carb with built in choke such as the Amal Mk11/2 or maybe a Mikuni, might one of those be suitable?
-
Thank you Big John it certainly does help, I am sure it is a 124 now. The exhaust is chromed with a similar but different (slimmer & smaller) exhaust to the one on my 199A, might this be the banana or clubfoot exhaust I have heard of these but have no idea which is which or what these silencers look like.
The rear hub differs from the one fitted to the 199A, it has raised, rounded strengthening ribs running across the brake drum, does that have a chrome liner. The front hub appears the same as the 199A. Carb appears to be an Amal 27mm concentric. Cylinder fins rounded and closely spaced with a screw in exhaust pipe collar. Homerlite alloy tank, seat unit is fitted.

How might I identify a Bultaco Model 124 & what are the + & - of this model, best sprocket sizes, useful info etc
-
Please keep us informed, would appear to be a good bike to restore being complete and original.
-
Top site that one Woody thank you, I went straight to the Bultaco section.
-
Most people myself included seem to prefer a Michelin tyre on the front wheel & either Michelin or IRC on the rear. I think the Michelin gets the vote but there aint much in it so why not see what is the best deal.
-
Full marks to Albert Cabestany for riding the SSDT with a headcam, good to have a top rider taking the trouble to do this.
-
Neither a Xispa, new Greeves or Ossa that I have seen. If these companies are serious then surely they should be displaying a bike in the SSDT Parc Ferme to raise the brand image, bettrer still put Joe Bloggs on one to prove that their bike will stand a weeks battering.
-
Visited the SSDT last year for the first time (when it was as wet out of the Loch as in it) strongly recommend the Lagnaha group of sections, plenty of sections/viewpoints & if you wait around you will see all the entry go through.
-
I have a PVL system fitted to my trials Cub and it is great. The only downside is that accurate machining is required to fit it. These ones fasten onto the existing mountings and I beleive they are also very good so may well be the one to get.

Does anyone have details of the modification to the head steady on a 199A (blue 350 325cc) What is required and what are the benefits
-
We have a 175 Mini-Majesty which has the heavier 250 yamaha front forks fitted, these are a great improvement over the std 175 type & fit straight in. We have also lowered the footrests by making different brackets.
My son and I are both 6' 4" tall and the bike fits us ok, maybe a little short in the wheelbase but very rideable.
Do you have the info we need to post a picture here on TC?
