Rebore - How Far Should I Go?
Folks, like any 2-stroke bike, the TYs are sensitive to carbon build up in the exhaust. When there is too much, it affects the exhaust pressure waves which affects the scavenging process and may make the piston rattle if not corrected. The TY sounds rattlier than others because it is air-cooled and hence no water jacket to muffle sound. Burn it out. It won't cost you much at all and you'll find the need for engine o'haul may not really be necessary.

290cc Sherco Keihn Carb Set Up
Depends on what set-up you have used. Did you fit the carb to the existing manifold? What jets are installed? What size needle jet? What altitude do you ride at?

Woodruff Key,
no, no no.....no lapping with grinding paste please! you will observe that the fitment of the flywheel to crank without tightening the nut is somewhat sloppy ie. several degrees of slop/rotation in either direction. when you tighten the nut you need to ensure the flywheel is rotated anti-clockwise and apply a little pressure to the kickstart to spin crank clockwise. this will eliminate the slop and set the timing to the most retarted timing position possible within that slop range. the Beta timing is set quite close to TDC, if you advance it too close to TDC by not paying attention to the above it may shear flywheel keys.

Timing Beta Rev 3
Set the stator as mentioned in that link. before tightening the flywheel nut up you may find there are a few degrees of slop present between the key, shaft and flywheel. Try turning the flywheel anti-clockwise (keep pressure on kick starter to spin crankshaft in opposite direction) whilst tightening the nut. Otherwise your timing will be advanced beyond what the stator is set to and it wont run so well.
