  1. The object of my training is not to get hurt. That's the reason i came from racing as i already have a pin in my right shoulder and an old green stick fracture of my left coller bone , right wrist snapped and skin that looks like a patch work quilt . So i have to work around my injuries . At our age we don't want damaged limbs esspecially the knees and lower back . Nothing that involves impact for me so cycling is good , as is walking and playing with the kid's.
  2. I loved to ride my 2013 250 pro .Exciting to ride , It steered brill and the suspension was equally as good, and i wheelied it everywhere. Can't tell you how disapointed i was with the quallity and daft things that just broke. Now gone to a Montesa 260 but i have an eye for the Beta and know plenty of people who are well satisfied with them . Think you would have to spend an hour on one to fully appreciate how confident the Gasser makes you feel.
  3. If fiddling counts i must be the fitest bustard out there as i'm never out the workshop ! Where i work i'm up and down stairs to the dive deck and the top of the pointed bit of the rig and then at home , i ride , and then i go out on the Mont !
  4. Quite possible mags but don't think his major sponsor Repsol would be keen to enforce that , when possibly they produce something better.
  5. Peter_tenerife, excessive fuel intake from a leaking injector will wash down the bore with the oil and end up in the crank case and unless the rings /bore are goosed i would not discount that from my diagnosis.
  6. The good thing about this oil dealer is they have a customer service line with a person at the end of it, and Silkolene is good stuff ,U.K (EU) company . You most certainly can't knock the price . I've dealt with Opie oils ( dealt with them in France as well) and they're very good and i fancy a little chat on the phone , of which i will give you all jackanory time . I still think it's not just down to oil though . I think at this stage that the plates need scrutiny . I for one don't think that Tony Bou will have the same plates and HTX in his gear box.So someone with a brain has thought to try different thing's there. Any one used the Silkolene advertised in the link above ?
  7. As for billyt's last post, that's from someone with bag's of experience with Mont's and trials bikes. But if you also notice ,he has turned into Dr Who ( a TV program time traveler for people outside of the U.K) with the year of his bike so really does have ton's and ton's of experience and discovered time travel . How good is that ? 2104 Repsol anyone ? Sorry Billy couldn't resist ?
  8. Think it's very difficult and confusing for the user to pick through whats fact and whats backing . Think that the manufacturers have brand loyalty for their countries products and backing for their teams.Bet if that bike was built in the U.K it would have Castrol os Silkolene in it.Just take note how sudden the performance of the HTX drops off for the hours you use the bike. dadof2 yes i agree and also as i stated earlier, some of the addatives can have a chemical reaction if water enters the oil and corrode the box to bloody hell. What makes me laugh is when they state it's say 10w 40 Turbo diesel oil. Ran 10w 40 "OIL FOR PETROL ENGINES" oil in my old Peugeot 405 turbo and it did 400,000 miles plus without any engine work .
  9. If you want to use it ,use it .I've stated the reasons above why i don't . So have you used Repsol 10w30 in the motor ian640 ? It states that in the manual also.I use Castrol probably one of the finest oils in the world.
  10. Hello chuck4788.Great info there pal.Clutch slip is not the problem ,drag is,but as you say it may be why they use HTX . For me both problems defeat the object of a clutch for a machine designed for our purpose. If i was drag racing i would want initial slip and then lock up . I'm sure some drag racer will put me straight for that comment ,just repeating pisch i've read. As for ATF , it is an oil designed for an hydraulic environment but nowt to say it can't be used for what we need.My self i prefer gearbox oil.I don't doubt that the HTX isn't a gearbox oil ,but i think it's qualities are really short lived, and further more with the experience on my Mont very rapid drop off in the oils performance. I agree with what your saying about the plates, and possibly thats where part of the problem lies. It's a bloody toss up with the information . It would be interesting to talk to the like's of EBC's R&D department to find out where they get they're results from. I think the problem lies when the clutch is disengaged and the oil wont let the plates seperate, therefor causing the drag. The colder the oil the worse the problem. That's why i let my bike warm up for a good 5mins before i even contemplate riding. Even when the bike was new it sufferd from drag. I blead the clutch and adjusted it (brand new bike here) no different . Now i've changed the oil and type, when the bikes warmed up it's no problem. But i'm interested with what every one now seem's to be saying about the clutch plates. Keep it coming men,and ladies.
  11. Have you got the manual with your bike ? If not, buy one as they are great and will be the best tool you can buy for the job. It covers everything , even cutting valve seat angles. To quote from the Cummins diesel manual " profit from Knowledge "!
  12. Ha ! Like to bet the designated usage could change when not a soul can buy HTX740 ! As Billyt states "why are they using Elf when REPSOL is directly associated and sponsor Honda/Montesa"? You have to admit every one, he has a bloody good point there .Would say mags ,so do you . So it may say that in the manual this year ,but if you can't get it ,what then ?Hope you see where i'm coming from saying that.Maybe next year they will state a Repsol product for the gearbox. An extra MMMMMMMMM on the dry clutch application too billyt !
  13. Interesting to see about the plates by sportsawyer.By chance ,have any of you read the clutch fix for Beta in that part of this forum. If not go and cast your eye's on it.Come the time for a peep at " what's going on in there" i'll be looking at the plates in great detail . Been down this rout with my 280 Andorra Gas Gas and took a while to find a good reliable set up that uses gearbox oil and not hydraulic fluid . That included laboariously cleaning all the gum and excessive friction material from the friction plates and countless types of oil . The oil i've got in the Mont now is doing the job, however it's not cheap. That's not to say it's to exspensive as i am a believer in good in good out,and would rather pay the £28 per ltr than be on the verge of a gearbox rebuild.Just my view there as i'm a right fussy so and so. So keep the info coming
  14. Have had a 250 2013 Gas Gas standard bike.Came from a 280 Edition.Very different. Well set up and it was a doddle to ride.Only bike i've jumped on and found i could balance there and then on . Suspension is first rate. I wheelied it up a hill over 2 concrete water pipes much to mine and my mates amazement.I liked to ride it . Ace to steer and myself thought the power ok for my level of riding . The guy i bought it off was 22 stone and i'm 11st 7. personal view only here , but , i think if you can set the bike up to handle , it's more useful than power. You have to put that power down to make it count and if you ain't set up,it ain't going to happen proper . The amount of lads and some ladies as well who have come from 250s and gone onto 125s of higher spec and are having better results says something to me . just my view that's all. Good luck with your choice. Ted
  15. Indeed Billyt, totally agree. Remember though ,they also have a long standing relationship with ELF.Your a similar age to me so expect you remember the Elf racing team (Honda) whom Ron Haslam rode for. But myself , it make's me scratch my bumps when the factory recommends an oil not designed for wet clutches. The word's " if you use this you can have it for 5 euro per liter" spring to mind . Repsols list is massive . So as you rightly state , why on earth use Elf ? Yes jrsunt , Putoline are dedicated motorcycle oil researchers and their web site is good. There's a rep to be found around the North of England , and when i'm back from work next .i'm going to get digging.
  16. Read a post this morning about Elf HTX740. The thread was asking where it could be bought now BVM have ceased trading . Guys ,whome is an active contributor to this site stated that GRO 75w was good and he uses that. Reading more guff on the ELF HTX , someone said " it says on the label not for oil bathed clutches". So whats not in it ? Or whats in it that's not good for wet clutches ? Any one know ? What i can tell you is that they use a similar product ,also ELF,in the old Citroen VTR 5 speed gear box and it's nasty stuff full of detergent . Recognized the sickly smell straight away.Going to do some digging on this subject as my mate is a rep for Castrol BP,see if he knows anything. So after waffling for 2 mins,i have a something . Putoline GP Nanotrans. It's designed for bike's with wet multiplate clutches that can run Synthetic. That last word is the important bit.Because if you run it in a box designed for mineral based oil, should water enter the gear box ,the detergents in that stuff mix with it and the chemical reaction that take's place will attack any metal surface that's not coated . So that will be the gearbox then. I have found you get clutch drag with the HTX . Any one else found that ? Please ,jib in . Updated this @ 20.00 hrs tonight .Right then . Putoline Nano tech GP 75w works ! Refilled with specified amount . Fired bike up and let it warm up for 5 mins.Operated clutch a few times. Rolled it out the workshop . Put it in gear and it dragged ! So rode around the garden got up to third and started to change down . Came to a stop and ah there it goes. Selected neutral first pop.So as not to jump to a conclusion ,put it in first whilst stood by the side of the bike . Didn't budge .Rolled bike backwards, in first with no problem one handed then selected neutral first try. Good enough for me Tommy ! Ted
  17. In addition to the last post i made ,i've done my first trial on the Mont. Did the easy rout for the sake of not thrashing the motor as it's just about getting run in. At first i didn't get on with it ,but by lap three i stopped dropping those stupid 1's .Did that lap for 8 owing to the magnetic kill switch i installed getting ripped off by a branch and of coarse doing it's job of stopping the bike dead . Did the last lap for 2 dabs . grip wise the rear Dunlop is fine ,but i don't like the front one , prefer the Michelin . The bike just laughs at Mud banking's like they aren't there . Steers well on the rocks to the point of me making fook ups because i expected it to slide and tensed up instead of letting it roll. That's why i prefer the Michelin too , more predictable . At a bit of an odds with the gearing though . Stating to find my balance a bit on it now too. This morning though,it's there shining as though it's never been out , nothing broken , no dripping . The only thing i need to do is put the chain up a notch , and it ran faultless and could have done the trial on one tank of fuel . Just did a small top up as i didn't fancy a push back , just to prove a point. So i'm happy with the bike , just need to work more on my self so i can bully it around some more .
  18. Been waiting for gearbox parts for my trusty 280 for 7 weeks from GasGas UK. Phoned them two days ago and will be another month ! Got to say that's s l o w service. No deliveries because of the SSDT ! Still though the trusty one will look and go brill again ---eventually ----some day--maybe . Good service from central wheels of Birmingham who did an excellent fast job of rebuilding the front wheel ,including replacement of the front rim,for my bike and subsequently tried to NOT charge me for the job. I was honest with them so they sent the wheel by next day courier free of charge. A big thank you to those people.
  19. Congratulations mate hope you enjoy the bike. Good to hear a tale of happiness . Regards Ted.
  20. Good find pal , i've done the DIY rout for paint and some has "FACTORY" results. Especially for brake calipers . Excellent, your bike looks brill .
  21. Good, glad to hear that . At least some one is has a brain to respond and not react.Hat's off to that man Vince at Haven trials . Best regards Ted.
  22. Let's make no bone's here pal ! Go to the dealer ask them once again to fix the problem . Take the customer service number of Honda motor cycle's uk ( if you live in the U.K) and call them up in front of them if they fob you off. Tell you something for nowt here, if that was my bike at £5,700 and the dealer gave me a fook off tablet they'd be really sorry. The longer people like us put up with crap like that ,the longer people like them will do it to us. The day i'd walk away like that then, Hell would freeze over! First question would be " Where's the boss"? You can bet Honda don't want that sort of press ! OOOOO! Make's me seeth!
  23. Shine a light ! Don't seem 2 mins ago those things happened . I was observing at Scoutmoor near Rochdale when the Beta came out and my eldest son (i have 3) was 5yrs old . Good memories ! Good pics, you still got that tash ?
  24. Ok then . finally got out on the new bike today.Back to back comparison to the Gas Gas Pro i changed from . The TXT is a brill bike to ride ,light easy to turn and handle , good power and suspension . Good balance right from the off. Stood there warming the Mont up and i was thinking " this could be hard work". The suspension is in standard set up while i run it in and wasn't as bouncy as the Gasser but it need's setting up front and back after running in. Felt a bit awkward at first, didn't have that jump on and ride feel.So i just rode around for an hour and used all the gears and did some gentle breaking . Let it cool for a bit and started gawping around. There's a few rock steps and a plinth with a bolder the half size of me so i thought let's see if it can take this lot on . Hit it with the back wheel and then i was over the lot landing with a thud at the other side. But without a doubt the bike revealed it's quality of drive on a loose steep hill with rock jutting through. I rode up from a ridiculously low rev crawl in 2nd and just crawled up. When i came down . i was stopped 20ft from the bottom just balancing and did a 180 turn in 2nd and powered up ,changing rout up the way. Didn't spin out or falter and i was laughing to my self ,carried on messing like that for age's and the noticed the crowd of Enduro riders watching me so i fecked off only to rip a hole in the back tyre. End of play. so i'm queuing to wash my bike at the power washer and a guy walks up and say's " we were taking bet's weather you would get up that hill going so slow " . Well do you know what it was easy and i'm well pleased with the bike . started to find the weight no disadvantage . Can't Waite to get out again,a feeling i regrettably didn't get from my Gas Gas. Ted .
  25. If the older Monts run at around 1800 rpm idle ,like the new 4rt ,that will be why the fans cut in all the time . they're running at twice the speed of other bikes therefor probably half as hot again . If they don't well i'm just speaking pish !
