Well, I guess I've got to ask: Why did you go to a motorcycle dealer to get ATF? My first choice would be an auto parts store.
I have used ATF in motorcycle transmissions for years. I really don't know if he is correct about wear or not. It's used in transmissions in cars and trucks the get many more miles put on them. I would say you are going to be tearing down the engine for something else a long time before ATF causes any wear problems.

Didn't see any mention of "Slow-Pull" vs "Fast-Pull" throttle.
If you have a Domino throttle and one is white and one is black (inner plastic piece that the cable end hooks into) it would make a big difference.
Just something else to check.

Well I know they do show up from time to time. What's your take on this one. If it is real, what does it do to the value?

There are several Yamaha kick starters that will fit the knurl end on the rod, but none have the absolute perfect bend to get out of the way. Most are fairly cheap (off Ebay). If you know a good welder you can modify a DT or MX kicker and probably live with it.

I have used both POR15 and Caswell's. Had no problems with either(I would avoid Kreem, I've had cracking problems with it). Make sure and follow the directions exactly and clean out the inside of the tank prior to the coating process.
I mount the tank on a rotissary grill, put in a couple of hand fulls of bolts or stones, some dish washing soap, little water and let it rotate for 10 to 15 hours. Might need to change the mounting of the tank a couple of times to make sure all areas get cleaned. Usually comes out looking almost new.
Great find, should be a lot of fun

thedktor ,
Those usually sell on Ebay for under $5.00 (about 2 pounds). If you can't find one send me a private email. I have several but I think shipping would make it "not worth wile".

Got a copy on my bedside table. Probably re-read a chapter about once a month. Always learn something.

On my last 250 rebuild I used a DT piston (yes I had to grind the corners of the skirts). It's very minor and I did it with a Dremel. Engine has run fine for the past year, no starting or power problems ... I guess it might be a bit noisey, sort of guessing there.
I split the crank and replaced both big end and small end bearings when I did the rebuild. The piston top to pin and pin to window specs were right on.
I can't really see why the DT piston should cause any problems.

I would check to see if the wheel is bent.
Just a thought.

Kev,
From my experience a Bantam swingarm is about 5/8" narrower than the Cub unit (it will not take a 4"x18" Trials tire). They do take the exact same pin and are the exact same size at the point where they connect to the frame. If you are trying to upgrade a Bantam it is a real easy swap.

Bruce,
I'm missing something. What do you gain by widening the swingarm? I put a stock Cub swingarm on my Bantam and the stock 4" x 18" Trials tire fits fine. Not sure what you gain by lengthening it either but the Cub guys can fill us in there. I would think your turning radius would be increased and it would not be as inclined to wheelie the front end (but I really can't picture that being a problem with a cub).
Interesting project.

Are you using a fuel filter?
If you aren't I would put one of those on first.

BJracing isn't always the fastest to get back to you. In their defense, they were riding in a Trial in NC this past weekend (Sat and Sun). Have no idea when they got home. He does check in here so may get back to you from your post.

Post the serial number of your bike and the exact year can be established.

Lucifer,
Check the forks on a couple of the old Yamaha DT's. I found a set that bolted right up to my Bantam (only slight center bolt length difference - use their triple tree). They are cheap, available and you can get parts to rebuild them. Plenty of travel and dampening. With their age they keep within the spirit of the class.

You were correct, tires went on with no issue.
Question: Are the wheels/hubs the same on the 175 and 250? They sure looked like they are identical.
Thanks for the comments.

Guys,
Just realized I have the older style (non-radial) tires on the TY175. Can I put a standard 4 x 18" IRC radial on that bike?(yes, I know I will need a tube). Almost looks like the it won't clear the swing arm.
Thanks in advance.

One of our regulars has had both knees replaced. He still can out ride me in any section.

I have pulled several with a standard 3 leg gear puller. If you are careful you can fit the legs around the outside edge of the wheel. You have to put the legs in at the larger openings and then slide them around to be equadistant (sp). Heat on the center of the flywheel hub at the same time helps. With a propane torch you can direct the heat to a specific point.
Last one I pulled had a bunch of pressure on and when it finally let go it sounded like someone fired a gun in my shop. Don't be in front of it when it lets go as they sometimes come off with quite a bit of force.
Good luck.

Travel should be just about your only expense as our events cost $5.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members. We use peer scoring to keep down the number of folks needed to setup an event. There are several of us that ride Vintage bikes but most of the goup ride modern (we ride the same sections).
Morganton is fairly close to you. Check Axton, VA, it shouldn't be to bad and Danville is maybe a half hour further.
Hope to see you.
